Cassius or Maximus? Please vote and also LMK any comments on either!

Hi Nameberry friends! I posted this question before but am now adding a poll. Please help me and my husband decide on our son’s name. We have two girls (Cressida and Octavia), both named for characters from Shakespeare plays. For our first son, we are down to either Cassius Max (nickname Cash, but we would pronouce the full name the Roman way, Cass-e-us) or Maximus Cassius (nickname Max). I’m slightly leaning Cassius because it is a bit more unusual/less common than Max, although Max is such a great, strong name that I’ve always loved. I note that Maximus is not from any Shakespeare play, but that’s not a deal breaker. Husband definitely prefers Cassius and loves the nickname Cash. I am so torn - and got a bit nervous when my mom declared Cassius “too theatrical” and “not masculine”. Please help us!

I prefer [name_m]Max[/name_m] to [name_m]Cash[/name_m] / Cassius* [name_f][/name_f]- but I can’t quite get on board with [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] especially upon the release of Gladiator 2 [name_f][/name_f]- depends if you’re happy for it to be associated with a pop culture hero, and ready for him to get some meme jokes.

I love [name_m]Max[/name_m] on its own. Otherwise [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m], Macsen/ [name_m]Maxen[/name_m] (the Welsh of Maximus), or even (and I prefer this), [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] nn [name_m]Max[/name_m]. Another reason for a [name_m]Max[/name_m] name is that a [name_m]Cass[/name_m] name is similar to Cress (Cressida). I also like different starting letters where possible.

*Re [name_m]Cassius[/name_m], there’s also [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] (which might feel more grounded and avoids [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] [name_m]Clay[/name_m] reference [name_f][/name_f]- thought this isn’t a big deal) or [name_m]Cashel[/name_m].

Thank you so much for the reminder re: Gladiator [name_f][/name_f]- I didn’t even register that but your’e right… it feels a bit like we are naming him for the movie, which I would like to avoid!!!

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think there is much of an association re: [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] [name_m]Clay[/name_m]? I wonder if many people will make that link…

Personally I agree with my girl @EloiseT[name_f][/name_f] I think [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] is to close to Cressid@ and are a little tongue tied which is why I massively prefer [name_m]Max[/name_m]. However [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] does feel very tied in with Gladiator and could be associated with pop culture be the butt of some memes. I think [name_m]Max[/name_m] is gorgeous I love the idea of [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m] and of course @EloiseT[name_f][/name_f] suggestion of [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] nn [name_m]Max[/name_m] is beyond perfect! I would championing [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] all the way if he was an option.

[name_f][/name_f]

Concerning [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] [name_m]Clay[/name_m] of course the association is there but I think because all these ‘cass’ names are increasing in popularity it’s not overwhelming. Still I think [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] & Cressid@ with all those repeated sounds feel a bit tongue twistery.

I like [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] with [name_f]Cressida[/name_f] & [name_f]Octavia[/name_f]

I think only Boomer+ would maybe make the connection to [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] [name_m]Clay[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- and even then unlikely. I just mentioned it as a “heads up” to check you’d be happy with the association (and I can’t see why not).

[name_f][/name_f]

Personally though, I’d be pitching [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] nn [name_m]Max[/name_m]. Has the ending you like and a great meaning, and cool nickname! And avoids the repeat names.

I love Cassius!!

[name_m]Cassius[/name_m] [name_m]Max[/name_m] “Cash” is dreamy! [name_f][/name_f] I like [name_m]Max[/name_m] as a nn more than [name_m]Cash[/name_m] myself, but didn’t like how rhymey [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] was. [name_f][/name_f] I like [name_m]Max[/name_m] [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] or [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] [name_m]Cash[/name_m] flow-wise a bit more. [name_f][/name_f] I’m a big fan of [name_m]Cassian[/name_m], so the leap to [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] wasn’t hard to do. [name_f][/name_f]

I love [name_m]Cas[/name_m]- names (Casper is my #1[name_f][/name_f], but they’re all great). Personally, I think [name_m]Cash[/name_m] sounds very rugged and manly.

Met a little [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] in the store the other day and it made my day to meet one. Wasn’t expecting it at all. It suited him. I’d love to see it used more so he gets my vote!

I love [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] but it’s a little close to [name_f]Cressida[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]. [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] is handsome too :two_hearts:

I love the name [name_m]Maximus[/name_m]! It has a great meaning, a cool nickname and everyone gets a different first name initial. In my opinion, it’s a strong and majestic choice. Cressid@, Oct@via and [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] sound amazing together.
[name_f][/name_f]However, [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] doesn’t work from my point of view…
[name_f][/name_f]If you both are leaning towards [name_m]Cassius[/name_m], please use it! Your mother will get used to the name as soon as she meets your little boy.
