Catie?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]

My friend really likes the name [name_f]Katie[/name_f] but spelt [name_f]Catie[/name_f]. It would be the child’s first name. What do you all think about spelling [name_f]Katie[/name_f], [name_f]Catie[/name_f]?

Thanks in advance.

I tend to much prefer a C in most names that can be spelled with C or K ([name_f]Cara[/name_f] vs [name_f]Kara[/name_f], [name_f]Carly[/name_f] vs [name_f]Karly[/name_f], [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] vs [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]). The C seems softer and more feminine to me for some reason.

Personally I love the name [name_f]Cate[/name_f] (with a C). Personally I would prefer [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Catie[/name_f] though, it just gives more options as she gets older and if she ever doesn’t like her name.

I have known several “Cates” and I think it works fine–but they have been nicknames for [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], so it seemed logical. I would prefer “[name_f]Kate[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Cate[/name_f]” as a formal name, even if the intent was to use [name_f]Catie[/name_f]/[name_f]Katie[/name_f] day to day.

I thought it was said [name_f]Cat[/name_f]-ee, rather than [name_u]Kay[/name_u]-tee. I’d personally stick with [name_f]Katie[/name_f] to avoid confusion, but [name_f]Catie[/name_f]'s okay.

I would only use the spelling [name_f]Catie[/name_f] if her full name was [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]. I’d use [name_f]Katie[/name_f] to make it much easier for the child. xx

Sorry to be picky but it wouldn’t be spelling [name_f]Katie[/name_f] as [name_f]Catie[/name_f]. It would be spelling [name_f]Catie[/name_f] as [name_f]Catie[/name_f]. If your friend doesn’t mind that it is not the most popular spelling, then that’s fine. My favourite spelling is [name_f]Katy[/name_f]. There is no rule book on name spellings, they simply change and evolve and vary over time according to fashions and preferences.
