[name]Catriona[/name] is my biggest crush right now, pronounced Kuh-tree-nuh, (which is the CORRECT way). I’m fine with strange Irish spellings, my name, [name]Siobhan[/name], is much harder to pronounce than [name]Catriona[/name].
I love that spelling because to me to seems very strong and beautiful. So WDYT?
Well, it would be fine in Australia because of the television presenter [name]Catriona[/name] Rowntree, which means most people can pronounce the name. But anywhere else (apart from [name]Ireland[/name] and the UK) you may have pronunciation issues. I like it and think it’s a nicer spelling than [name]Katrina[/name], especially if you’re into Irish names.
As long as you don’t live in the [name]Louisiana[/name] bayou, it’s nice!
I’m not a huge fan of the name [name]Katrina[/name], and thus, [name]Catriona[/name], though admittedly the Irish spelling is more visually appealing. I do think that you’ll have some definite pronunciation issues, however, because [name]Siobhan[/name] is a pretty well-known name, while [name]Catriona[/name] I naturally assumed was pronounced cat-tree-OWN-uh at first glance.
I think that visually, it’s very elegant, but sound-wise I dislike it.
The name [name_f]Catriona[/name_f] is actually Scottish Gaelic and is pronounced [name_f]Cat[/name_f]-ree-oh-nah.
Pronouncing it like [name_f]Katrina[/name_f] is actually the Anglicized (English) pronunciation.
It became popular in [name_f]England[/name_f] because it is thought of as an alternate spelling, which it is in fact not!

Funny. [name_f]My[/name_f] cousin is a [name_f]Catriona[/name_f] and she’s Scottish- she pronouces her name like [name_f]Katrina[/name_f]. Perhaps there are variations even within [name_f]Scotland[/name_f].
