Cecelia or Cecilia

Theres been a lot of debate on the spelling of this name. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband FINALLY agreed to my first pick [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], however he wants to spell it [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]. The nickname he wants to use is [name_f]Cece[/name_f] and i will probably call her [name_f]Celia[/name_f], even though i know its technically its own name and not a nickname. But when i googled the name [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] it asked if i meant [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]. I do t really want my daughter thinking we made a typo on her birth cert. please help me love the spelling my husband is adament on using!!! We only have 5 weeks to go!

Hmm… I just typed it into google too and I see what you’re talking about! I think that [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] are two different names, though. I would go with [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]. It’s not like it’s a made up spelling or anything…

I think it depends on the composition of the middle and last name. Disregarding that I prefer [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]. I think it looks more youthful.

[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] is a perfectly acceptable spelling. If he wants [name_f]Cece[/name_f] and you want [name_f]Celia[/name_f], I think it’s pretty much perfect.

[name_u]Early[/name_u] congratulations, mama! Your choice is an angelic, yet strong one.

I tend to be very picky about spellings (I work as an editor), so here are my 2 cents.

I would go with the traditional spelling of [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]. Saints are named [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] the [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and Garfunkel song is “[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f].”

I absolutely think your husband still can call her [name_f]Cece[/name_f], even with her name spelled [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]. I know a little Italian-American girl who is a very talented gymnast who is named [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] but goes by [name_f]Cece[/name_f], even at meets! I thought [name_f]Cece[/name_f] was her given name for a long time.

Go with your gut. Your have made such a lovely selection. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know that [name_m]Saint[/name_m] [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] is the patron saint of musicians?

Also: Be sure to post in Nameberry’s birth announcements after your little one arrives! GOOD [name_m]LUCK[/name_m]!

I never got how a [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] couldn’t be a [name_f]Cece[/name_f]. I mean Eleanors go by [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] even if there names aren’t spelled Ellienor.

I prefer the look of [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]. It looks fuller, and more elegant.

Either way, it’s a beautiful name. [name_f]Cece[/name_f] is super cute, and [name_f]Celia[/name_f] is sleek and gorgeous. You can’t go wrong.

Congratulations! You will have a beautifully named daughter.

Since the name is taken from the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] family name of Caecilius, I prefer the [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] spelling (after all, the male version is [name_m]Cecil[/name_m] not Cecel). [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] is a variant spelling and to me it looks like a poorer relation in comparison. There’s no reason that [name_f]Cece[/name_f] or [name_f]Celia[/name_f] can’t be used when it’s spelled [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f].

I always, always, always preferred [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]. I don’t know why, I just did. However, the last year or so, I’ve founf myself preferring [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]. Again, I don’t know why. As the previous posted mentioned, it’s possible to still nickname a [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f], [name_f]Cece[/name_f] and [name_f]Celia[/name_f].

I know that [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] is the original spelling, but I’ve always preferred the [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] spelling. I think it looks more balanced. Either way is great though!

I personally prefer [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] because [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] makes me think of cilia, which are protrusions on cells that help with movement (random I know!). [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] just looks right to me; more balanced, youthful and elegant. I personally dislike [name_f]Cece[/name_f] (it’s in the same group as [name_f]Fifi[/name_f] and [name_f]Coco[/name_f] for me - names for an annoying [name_m]French[/name_m] poodle!), but I love [name_f]Celia[/name_f]. I agree with pp though that both nicknames could be used with either spelling. Go with what you and your partner love the most; either way your daughter will have a beautiful name!

I agree with pp, [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] makes me think of cilia as well! Although it’s not a horrid connection, it still bothers me enough to change the spelling to [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Cece[/name_f] and [name_f]Celia[/name_f] as nicknames. Your daughter will be well-named however you spell it!

While I know it’s an acceptable spelling, I always think [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] looks like a misspelling. That said, I’m also not a fan of [name_f]Madisyn[/name_f], even though it’s the most popular spelling of [name_u]Madison[/name_u] these days, so I may just always favor the original (or original to me) spelling.

It seems the opinion’s pretty split on it, though, so I think you’d be fine either way.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] again.

I don’t know if this tidbit will tip you toward one spelling or the other, but here goes: [name_f]Vera[/name_f] Wang’s oldest daughter is named [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]. Her second daughter is [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. When it comes to class, you can’t go wrong by “listening” to [name_f]Vera[/name_f] Wang.

I vote for [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f].

I prefer [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], especially if it’s the original. And [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] is my saints name. [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] is okay though.

[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]/[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] is so musical! [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] choice. I do not have an opinion on which ‘looks’ better so I would choose the spelling that looks best with your mn choice and surname.
