Cecelia vs Celia

My husband and I are not finding out the gender of the baby. We’re strating with girl names first.

We’ve been working so much to save for maternity leave that we fell a bit behind in watching one of our favorite TV shows “The Office.” We finally settled on naming our baby either [name]Celia[/name] or [name]Cecelia[/name] if it is a girl and then 3 days later we saw the episode where [name]Pam[/name] gives birth and names her baby [name]Cecelia[/name] [name]Marie[/name].

I was so mad but we’ve decided we’re still probably going to use it. We were going to use [name]Marie[/name] as the middle name because it is my mother’s middle name but now we are going to use my husband’s mother’s middle name [name]Genevieve[/name].

My two questions are:

  1. [name]Do[/name] you think it will become too popular now that it has been used on a TV show?

  2. [name]Do[/name] you prefer [name]Cecelia[/name] or [name]Celia[/name]?

I’m leaning more towards [name]Cecelia[/name] because it was my great great aunt’s name and I always think that it is best to name the baby the full name and then call it the nick name if you want. My husband prefers [name]Celia[/name]. Please help!

I prefer [name]Celia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name]…

I definitely don’t think it will become more popular due to the one TV show. People worry about that kind of thing, but it never actually happens that way. I mean, I’m sure there’ll be people who watch the episode and say “[name]Cecilia[/name], what a pretty name!” and a few might put it on their list, but I can’t see it going into the top 100. The Office is one of my favorite shows, too, and I was so excited for the name!

Another thing: I would spell it the original way, [name]Cecilia[/name]. The [name]Cecelia[/name] spelling was invented to make it easier to get to the nickname [name]Celia[/name] (a whole different name, from Caelus meaning ‘heaven’). It just looks made up to me (and I believe the Office baby is [name]Cecelia[/name], so you could distance yourself more from the show that way).

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name], and [name]Cecilia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] or [name]Celia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] are both gorgeous! Does one flow better with your last name?

Did you know one of the main characters from Weeds is named [name]Celia[/name]? I wouldn’t worry too much about [name]Jim[/name] and [name]Pam[/name]'s baby being named [name]Cecelia[/name]. If you like it then I would use it. Seems like you’re drawn to C names, what about [name]Camille[/name]? Or [name]Camilla[/name]? [name]Both[/name] are pretty as well…

Our last name is short and very British. It sounds like “waffle.” In fact when I first met my husband I thought he said his last name was “waffle” and I thought to myself “this isn’t going to work out between us because I don’t want my last name to be Waffle.”

I like [name]Camilla[/name] but when I brought it up my husband before we settled on [name]Cecelia[/name] or [name]Celia[/name] and he shot it down because he thought too many people would associate it with [name]Prince[/name] [name]Charles[/name]’ mistress turned wife.

I’ve debated on the spelling of [name]Cecelia[/name] vs [name]Cecilia[/name] to if we go with that over [name]Celia[/name]. I thought [name]Cecelia[/name] would be an easier compromise for my husband because it is the spelling previously used in my family and he the name he prefers “[name]Celia[/name]” is fully in there. I’m also afraid of going with [name]Cecelia[/name] too because I think people are more apt to call her “CeCe” which I don’t care for.

I’ve heard that [name]Celia[/name] was on the show “Weeds” but I’ve never seen it because I don’t get Showtime. I’m thinking it might be best if I don’t see it because then I might change my mind again. I never thought this baby naming thing would be so hard.

While I don’t think a name will become super popular because of a TV show, I think that the use of a beautiful name like [name]Cecelia[/name] on a popular TV show may reflect its already growing popularity and help speed the process along. For instance, [name]Ross[/name] and [name]Rachel[/name] did not make [name]Emma[/name] popular, but I don’t think they slowed its rise either. So I think the questions is, how popular is too popular for you? I don’t think [name]Cecelia[/name] is going to be top 25 material, but what if its in the top 200 or 300? Thats too much for some people, but would be fine with me.

[name]Celia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] is my vote. I think it flows better than [name]Cecelia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name].

If you name her [name]Cecelia[/name] you can always call her [name]Celia[/name]. Whether you spell it [name]Cecilia[/name] or [name]Cecelia[/name], the nn Cece may be inevitable (unless you insist on [name]Celia[/name])

I kinda prefer [name]Celia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] though…but [name]Cecelia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] it nice too.

I guess what I’m trying to say is both are great names, it just comes down to which one you like more.

Also, I wouldnt worry about The Office. I dont think it will do much for the popularity.

[name]Hi[/name]! I cracked up when I read about the first time you heard your husband’s last name and mistook it for waffle.

With [name]Genevieve[/name] in the middle, my personal favorite is [name]Celia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name]. I do think that [name]Cecelia[/name] is an absolutely beautiful name, too, and more importantly, I love how it has meaning to you. (I think that [name]Cecelia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] is very pretty, too, and I think the meaning to you is more important than the flow.)

Like a previous poster mentioned, if you name her [name]Cecelia[/name], you can always call her [name]Celia[/name], which gives you the best of both worlds.

While I do think that [name]Jim[/name] and [name]Pam[/name]'s baby [name]Cecelia[/name] will bring more attention the name, and that more parents may use it as a result, I personally can’t see it becoming a mega-popular name.

If you love [name]Cecelia[/name], I hope you use it!

Good luck!

I think you should go with [name]Cecelia[/name], not [name]Cecilia[/name] and not [name]Celia[/name]. This is the family spelling, and you chose it first! I also personally think the name [name]Cecelia[/name] is much more attractive than [name]Celia[/name]. I even think you should use [name]Marie[/name] if you want. It’s a very common middle anyway that no one will associate with Th Office, and it has personal significance to you. If you do use [name]Genevieve[/name], [name]Cecelia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] Waffle flows well too. (I know your name isn’t actually Waffle.) It isn’t too much of a mouthful with your last name, I don’t think. But don’t let The Office ruin your plans! No one will care after even a month from now.

I agree with [name]Jemma[/name] entirely.

It’s true [name]Celia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] may flow better because of the syllable count, but I love [name]Cecelia[/name] a million times more than [name]Celia[/name]. Actually I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Cecelia[/name] and I don’t much care for [name]Celia[/name] at all. My great-grandmother was [name]Cecilia[/name], so it’s on my list, too. I agree with you about using the full, family name. It’s just not the same if you don’t. It may mean just as much to you, but often the extended family doesn’t see it that way. Well, I guess that doesn’t matter so much, but I still prefer to use the full, properly spelled name.

I honestly don’t think its that big of a deal at all. [name]Cecilia[/name] and [name]Celia[/name] are both beautiful names and I don’t think people will just say “Oh, they named their baby after the people on The Office…” hahah, it will be fine! If that was the deal, then almost every single name [name]EVER[/name] would be taken because of how many different names are used in every book or movie or show! So dont worry about it  I think [name]Cecelia[/name] is my prefered choice over [name]Celia[/name], it sounds prettier to me, and [name]Celia[/name] could be a nickname for [name]Cecelia[/name], though I also love [name]Lia[/name]. I think [name]Cecelia[/name] [name]Marie[/name] flows better than [name]Cecelia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name], because the second combo is a bit too much of a mouthful. But I prefer [name]Celia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] over [name]Celia[/name] [name]Marie[/name]. Overall, I like [name]Cecelia[/name] [name]Marie[/name] best! Beautiful.

Oh, but if you really think [name]Cecelia[/name] is unusable because of The Office, what about [name]Cecily[/name]? I adore that name and it is similar to [name]Cecelia[/name]. [name]Cecily[/name] is pronounced SES-uhlee.

I love the name [name]Cecilia[/name]. I’m biased…it’s my name. I feel like spelling it [name]Cecelia[/name] is like spelling [name]Cameron[/name] [name]Camryn[/name]. Not terribly classy. [name]Celia[/name] by itself has some southern belle overtones for me…maybe just me, idk.

All I think of is the [name]Paul[/name] [name]Simon[/name] song - I am guessing the name spiked in popularity when that was released

I’d use [name]Celia[/name] (one of the names of my various lists for a girl). Shorter, smoother, classic appeal. [name]Cecelia[/name] has always sounded pretentious to me.

(Incidentally, no, I don’t think the name [name]Cecelia[/name] will become more popular solely because it was chosen by a character on a television show–but I can understand your irritation. I HATE it when my favorite names get “stolen” by Hollywood.)

Me too!!! Great song! I think that would be fun to hav your own song!

As for [name]Celia[/name], all I think of is Celiac disease which I believe is a digestive disorder… Not a nice connotation.

I vote for [name]Cecelia[/name]/[name]Cecilia[/name]!!

I’ve tried to like those names, but I can’t. [name]Both[/name] have such an unattractive sound to them. But its just me.

Honestly I doubt the name is going to be as popular as when a character on Friends named her baby [name]Emma[/name].

If you love the name use it!

I also prefer the full name over the shorter name. Your husband can always call her [name]Celia[/name]. I wouldn’t worry about the Office baby, nobody will even think of that connection after a few months pass.

go with [name]Celia[/name]

and the office i heard might be going off the air soon anyways.

  1. No I think the name was not a big focus on the show and I think that since [name]Cecelia[/name] is not unheard of or anything (like [name]Lux[/name] was) it will not become too popular.

  2. I much prefer [name]Celia[/name]. It has all them femininity of [name]Cecelia[/name] without the frilliness, in my opinion. I think it is a lovely and very pretty name.

[name]Celia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] is stunning! Absolutely gorgeous.

  1. I don’t think [name]Cecelia[/name] would be too popular due to The Office to be honest. If anything, I think it makes [name]Cecelia[/name] even more usable.

  2. First off, I prefer the [name]Cecilia[/name] spelling over [name]Cecelia[/name]. The spelling just looks cleaner in my eyes, though both names are lovely. It’s a close call, but I slightly prefer [name]Celia[/name] over [name]Cecelia[/name] due to meaning ([name]Celia[/name] means “heavenly” while [name]Cecelia[/name] means “blind”). If neither of you really plan on calling her [name]Cecelia[/name] and will mainly call her [name]Celia[/name], I’d go with [name]Celia[/name]. If you guys will call her both, then [name]Cecelia[/name] would be ideal. [name]Cecelia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] feels a bit lengthy also, and has quite a lot of Es, so I’m unsure if that bothers you. FYI, my personal favorite of the Ce- category though is definitely [name]Cecily[/name]. [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] would be charming if you are willing to consider that also.
