Celebrían

Okay maybe this is a bit too out there, but it has become a real GP of mine and I’d love to hear your opinions!

Celebrían

Any pros and cons? Is it usable?

It was invented by Tolkien.

It means “silver maiden”.

Pronounced: keh-leh-BREE-an

It will for sure be mispronounced. It does hava a nice sound and vibe, so maybe use it as a middle name!

I pronounced it correctly when I first saw the title, and I think it’s a lovely name!
I think it’s usable, but it might need to be spelt out or corrected.

I love all [name_m]Tolkien[/name_m] names, so I’m biased  I do think its usable, but it would get a lot of pronunciation issues unfortunately! I know online pretty often and even in Jackson’s movies, named like Celebrian are sometimes mispronounced by saying the ‘C’ with an ‘S’ sound.

Yeah, my fear is that people say it like celebrate + [name_m]Brian[/name_m] :frowning:

It has an elegant look and I like the sound! Unfortunately it does remind me of the word celebrity (which I don’t love) and with that similarity I would definitely assume the first syllable to be pronounced like “seh” rather than “keh”. I think it’s usable as a middle name only as I would worry it would be frustrating explaining the spelling/pronunciation constantly if it were a first name.

It’s bit too close to celebrity for me and the pronunciation is non-intuitive to me as a person who took a Romance language in school (where c followed by e/i never makes a K sound).
However, I do like the sound of the name!

Others have said it- may be mispronounced, I sadly did.

While I don’t think it’s unusable, the lack of nicknames and the hard to pronounce nature would make this a name I wouldn’t lean towards.

I believe in Welsh (which heavily inspired Elvish), the C makes a K sound, like in [name_u]Celyn[/name_u]!

@Mayblossom yeah, unfortunately I do think a lot of people would say it like the beginning of Celebrate! I do think they might have an easier time with “bree” vs “bry”, though!

Maybe [name_f]Bri[/name_f] (said like Bree). For a nickname.

Cellie (like Kelly) might work too.

I know it’s from [name_m]Tolkien[/name_m], but my first impression is that it looks kind of like a smoosh of “celebrity” and “Brian”…

It’s a nice name in theory, but I think it would be mispronounced a lot and most people would not be familiar with the literary reference.

I recognize it from [name_m]Tolkien[/name_m], but still mispronounced it in my head  ! It’s a cool name, but it’s definitely a brave name that might require some explanation. I also think the ending might have some people think it’s a boy name. Perhaps as a middle?

I definitely would assume the seh-le-bree-in pronunciation simply because that’s just how all Ce- words are pronounced in [name_f]English[/name_f], and I even read LotR. I didn’t think of “celebrity,” my first thought was “celebrate” which I think is nice! I think it’s a nice sounding name but if you used it I think it would make the most sense to either pronounce it with the S sound or change the spelling to Kelebrian.
