I am hoping for some input on the name [name]Celine[/name] (for a little girl due in 5 weeks)!
The last name starts with an “S” and I think the two sound good together. I am looking for a name that is relatively uncommon. That the name is French is a bonus, but not a requirement.
My question is this: Is the association to a certain songstress too strong? Are you sitting at your computer singing that your “heart will go on and on”? Or do you think that the initial connection would be made, but overcome once friends and family associated the name with our daughter?
[name]Do[/name] you like the sound of the name generally?
I love [name]Celine[/name]! And thanks to [name]Celine[/name] [name]Dion[/name], it’s one of the few French names that Americans will get right! However, if your last name starts with an S, I could see slipping with all of the S sound. Other alternatives:
[name]Cecile[/name]
[name]Amelie[/name]
[name]Corinne[/name]
[name]Elise[/name]
[name]Delphine[/name]
[name]Manon[/name] (love this one, but I’m positive it would get butchered)
My middle name is [name]Celine[/name], and I can tell you that everyone has asked me, “Were you named after [name]Celine[/name] [name]Dion[/name]?” That said–I was born in the 1980s, in [name]Celine[/name]'s heyday, when it might have been plausible that I was named after her! I think it’s such a lovely name that people will immediately get over the icon, and that children your daughter’s age won’t ever think twice–they won’t be familiar with [name]Celine[/name] [name]Dion[/name] at all.
I must ask, though: will you use the accent? I’ve always adored being C”line rather than [name]Celine[/name].
I think [name]Celine[/name] is lovely and, although people might ask if she was named after [name]Celine[/name] [name]Dion[/name], they’ll get over it pretty quickly, I think. BTW, I don’t know if this is universal, but on my keyboard if I press control-shift and then the ? button, I get an ” (I think it switches the language to French). It’s an american built computer but I’m not sure if they changed it in any way to sell in [name]Canada[/name], so you’d have to check around, but if it’s possible I don’t think it’s too much hassle to spell it C”line.
I love this name, and it’s on a long list for our daughter due in 2 weeks (though probably as a middle, and it’s an outside contender). I think it’s beautiful and is both recognizable but not common.
I think that if it was 1990, the [name]Dion[/name] connection would be tough, but she’s pretty established at this point-- and old news. By the time your little one is old enough to be out in the world, [name]Celine[/name] [name]Dion[/name] will be far from tabloid fodder, she’ll be forgotten by some or remembered as a music classic, which is not a bad association.
The other issue we considerd is that [name]Celine[/name] is a luxury designer brand name too–still a bit obscure now, but if it were to take off, the name could end up with that connotation- kind of like naming your kid “Versace” or “[name]Armani[/name]”.
Yikes! That might be a deal breaker. Then again, I would kill for a [name]Chloe[/name] handbag. :)[/quote]
Now I keep thinking of other fashion houses with names that are popular for girls… in addition to [name]Chloe[/name] (and [name]Celine[/name]) we have [name]Stella[/name] McCartney, Vivenne Westwood …
