Chalcedony

I have a turquoise betta fish that I named Chalcedony (kal-SED-o-nee), and I was wondering what you think of the sound of it for a baby name. It’s a type of mineral rock used in jewelry.

I know it’s not necessarily something people know how to pronounce correctly intuitively, but other than that I think it’s got a pleasant sound. :two_hearts:

I like the sound a lot! However, I agree that many people won’t be able to pronounce it easily – I would have mispronounced it at first glance. I think it might work better in the middle spot, just because I can imagine it would be frustrating to constantly be explaining the spelling/pronunciation of a name. However, if she could introduce herself as [name_f]Callie[/name_f], it might be doable!

I find this intriguing. Because I love gems and minerals, I already knew the word though, so I might not be the best person to comment on usability.

It would be a nightmare to get people to pronounce it correctly (I’ll admit I’d have pronounced it with a Ch sound), but it’s pretty and sounds namey!

Chalcedony is interesting and has a nice look and sound. It might be a big name to wear but i think it would be doable

I think it would make a super cool middle!! Might be tricky to pull off as a first but I think it would suit the right person and I actually like it a lot now that I can see how it’s pronounced!

(I would have said chowl-seh-DOH-nee instinctively!)

i think— though as lovely as it looks and sounds—may be a bit intimidating in the first spot, but would be a stunning middle name!

It sounds pretty, but I just think it be a lot to handle. Also, I did think it was a made up name at first glance.

Oh Oh OH! I love this word. Turns out I’ve been saying it wrong (but what’s new?). I love it.

Yes, I think it is nice! That is so funny that you posted this. I was just thinking about a few jems that I would bounce off the berries to see if they might be names. They were Marcasite and Rubellite.

It’s pretty! It would probably be mispronounced a lot but I think it could definitely work as a name.
