chalk and cheese?

Hello berries,

My name is [name]Claire[/name], I’m new. I’ve been floating about nameberry for the last couple of weeks as my husband and I have just started trying for a baby. Being my usual impatient self, I am jumping the gun (no pun intended) and am already obsessing over names.

I have always loved old classic, vintage names, often with a British or a French feel to them. (I used to call my dolls [name]Monique[/name] and [name]Henrietta[/name] when I was 11- yes, I still played with dolls at 11).

When compling the names I love, I notice that there is an obvious divide in the style, especially with the girls. While I love the feminine, flowing sounds of [name]Eulalie[/name], [name]Clementine[/name], [name]Penelope[/name] and [name]Mirabelle[/name] - I equally lose it over the more serious and solid [name]Harriet[/name], [name]Edith[/name], [name]Beatrix[/name] and [name]Agatha[/name].

The difference in style isn’t as noticeable with the boys who vary from [name]Theodore[/name], [name]Oscar[/name] and [name]Henry[/name] to [name]Dashiell[/name], [name]Louis[/name] and [name]Frederick[/name].

[name]Do[/name] you think it would be strange to mix these styles for potential sibsets? For instance, do you think [name]Harriet[/name] and [name]Eulalie[/name] as sisters are just too different? Is one too feminine and one too masculine?

I’d love for you to have a go at coming up with some sibsets with the following names - and please do tell me which combos you think could work and which combos are just ridiculous. Other suggestions that I haven’t included are great, too.

GIRLS
[name]Eulalie[/name]
[name]Penelope[/name]

[name]Oscar[/name]
[name]Ernest[/name]

Thanks,
[name]Claire[/name]

[name]Hi[/name], [name]Claire[/name]!

Of your girl names, I would put [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Viola[/name], and [name]Mirabelle[/name] together. However, I adore - love, love, love! - [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Viola[/name], [name]Cecily[/name], and [name]Gwendolyn[/name] (or [name]Gwendolen[/name]) together even more!

For your boys, I love [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Hugo[/name], [name]Frederick[/name], [name]Dashiell[/name], and [name]Ernest[/name] most! But, with my “ideal” set of [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Viola[/name], [name]Cecily[/name], and [name]Gwendolen[/name], I’d pair [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Frederick[/name], and [name]Dashiell[/name]!

Take care!

[name]Lemon[/name]

[name]Hi[/name] [name]Claire[/name]!

I think if you love the name, that is all that matters. I’m one of the few who think siblings names don’t necessarily have to match. I would much rather go with names I love so don’t worry too much about it, just pick your favorite and you can’t go wrong.

My favorites:

[name]Oscar[/name], [name]Dashiell[/name], & [name]Hugo[/name]

[name]Oliver[/name], [name]Henry[/name], & [name]Dashiell[/name]

[name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Mirabelle[/name], & [name]Eulalie[/name]

Hey [name]Claire[/name],

I know what you mean, we have really similar style I love a lot of the same names as you and worry that they don’t go together sometimes, but ultimately, I think most of them do, as they all have that classic, vintage flair!

Here are some combos that I really love…

[name]Penelope[/name], [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Frederick[/name], [name]Hugo[/name]
[name]Dashiell[/name], [name]Oscar[/name], [name]Agnes[/name], [name]Mirabel[/name]
[name]Florence[/name], [name]Harriet[/name], [name]Louis[/name], [name]Edmund[/name]

From your list I really, really love [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Mirabel[/name], [name]Florence[/name], [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Harriet[/name], [name]Edith[/name], [name]Agnes[/name] (my current obsession!) and [name]Theodora[/name]. And for boys, [name]Frederick[/name], [name]Hugo[/name] and [name]Oscar[/name].

Thanks, [name]Lemon[/name]. I love [name]Cecily[/name]! [name]Imagine[/name] sisters [name]Mirabelle[/name]/[name]Mirabel[/name] and [name]Cecily[/name] swoon. I’ve never been too fond of the [name]Gwen[/name] names, though…

Thanks, Millikate… I’m always quite eclectic with my style… and I’m the same as you - don’t like matchy names… however, my favourite girls are [name]Harriet[/name] and [name]Eulalie[/name] which do seem a bit chalk and cheese (even for me)… hmmm

I love your [name]Oscar[/name], [name]Dashiell[/name] and [name]Eulalie[/name] combo! Divine!
[name]Eulalie[/name], [name]Penelope[/name] and [name]Clementine[/name] is just the most melodic sibset ever! [name]LOVE[/name]!

[name]Hi[/name] [name]Liz[/name], I agree. At least there is that vintage theme that sort of glues them together in a way. I can totally see a [name]Florence[/name], [name]Harriet[/name], [name]Louis[/name] and [name]Edmund[/name] running around my house one day!

[name]Harriet[/name], [name]Beatrix[/name] and [name]Edmund[/name] - yum!
[name]Pascal[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] has something going on there, too. [name]Edith[/name] is my Grandmothers name so it would honour also. [name]Pascal[/name] I love… especially for a boy born around [name]Easter[/name].

[name]Hi[/name] [name]Claire[/name]!

You have such a nice list there! I think all of your names fall into a larger category that I would call ‘vintage charm,’ although I do see what you mean about a couple of different sub-categories, especially with the girls. I think you described them perfectly as flowing and feminine vs. solid and serious.

For the most part, I could see almost any of them working together as siblings. The exception would be pairing the very most extremes from the two sub-categories. For me, this would be [name]Agatha[/name] and [name]Agnes[/name] from the solid category, and [name]Mirabelle[/name] and [name]Aurelia[/name] from the flowy feminine category. I think these would each work fine on their own (although I must say that [name]Agatha[/name], [name]Agnes[/name], and [name]Mirabelle[/name] are not my favorites from your list), but I think when you pair, say, [name]Agatha[/name] with [name]Mirabelle[/name], the contrast is a little too strong. I can’t help it, I just imagine [name]Mirabelle[/name] as the pretty sister and [name]Agatha[/name] as the more homely, slightly nerdy one! And I would just worry what that would mean for the sisters’ identities if you gave one a beautiful name and the other such a ‘solid’ one.

But as I say, I think any other combo from your list would totally work. I actually think [name]Harriet[/name] and [name]Eulalie[/name] are great together and aren’t nearly as chalk and cheese as [name]Mirabelle[/name] and [name]Agatha[/name] or [name]Aurelia[/name] and [name]Agnes[/name]. I guess the difference is that [name]Harriet[/name] is solid but still pretty in a subtle way, and cute; I’m afraid that, to me, [name]Agatha[/name] and [name]Agnes[/name] just aren’t. [name]Just[/name] my opinion, though! Good luck

[name]Hi[/name], [name]Claire[/name]!

I’m glad you love [name]Cecily[/name]! I could totally see [name]Cecily[/name] and [name]Beatrix[/name] as sisters, and you could through [name]Viola[/name] in there, too, if you want more. I like [name]Mirabel[/name] more than [name]Mirabelle[/name], put I think something like [name]Helena[/name] or [name]Violet[/name] would work better with [name]Cecily[/name] and [name]Beatrix[/name], personally!

[name]Lemon[/name]

Some great advice, Hoodie - Thank you. I definately think [name]Agnes[/name] and [name]Agatha[/name] are the more stern names from the lot, and although I love them on a sophisticated woman… a little girl? Not really. [name]Harriet[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] are kind of on the fence, and could possibly work alongside [name]Eulalie[/name] and [name]Penelope[/name] etc.
Thanks everyone for your input

So far I am loving any mix of [name]Eulalie[/name], [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Harriet[/name], [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Mirabel[/name], [name]Cecily[/name] and [name]Edith[/name] along with [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Frederick[/name], [name]Dashiell[/name], [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Oscar[/name]

hmmm, perhaps [name]Mirabelle[/name] is feeling too frilly now? I really do love [name]Beatrix[/name]… but I’m just hoping it’s not one of those crush names that might feel a bit like a ‘trend of the time’ later on? I am trying to warm up to [name]Beatrice[/name] (which I think is potentially more Classic)… but I just can’t see that little girl.

[name]Do[/name] you think you could get [name]Lola[/name] as a nn from [name]Viola[/name]?
Also, what nn’s can you derive from [name]Cecily[/name]?

[name]Hi[/name], again, [name]Claire[/name]!

I totally think [name]Beatrix[/name] is a classic! It reminds me of [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name], who feels very classic to me. I much prefer [name]Beatrix[/name] to [name]Beatrice[/name], myself, as the X ending gives the name an added sense of whimsy and vintage elegance. What do you think? I know you suggested [name]Beatrice[/name] over on my thread, so maybe that explains things for you. Plus, [name]Bea[/name] and [name]Trixie[/name] are so cute as nicknames!

Yeah, [name]Mirabelle[/name] does feel a bit frilly for my taste, honestly. I just like it more as a middle name, you know?

Sure you could use [name]Lola[/name] as a nickname for [name]Viola[/name]! I think [name]Vi[/name] is a more natural choice, but [name]Lola[/name] works! As for [name]Cecily[/name], you could use Ceci (“Sessy”), CC, or even [name]Sissy[/name] and [name]Cilly[/name] ("[name]Silly[/name]") for nicknames! Others include [name]Ceil[/name], [name]Celie[/name], Cece, [name]Celia[/name], Cyl, Cily, and [name]Lily[/name]…

I think something like [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Clara[/name], [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Catherine[/name], or [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] would be darling to get to the CC nickname, but [name]Celie[/name] is pretty, too! I don’t know how you feel about alliteration, but you could go crazy with it and use [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Briony[/name], [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Bellamy[/name], or [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Bernadette[/name], and [name]Viola[/name] [name]Vivian[/name]!

Did you like [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Frederick[/name], and [name]Dashiell[/name] for boys? I forgot what you said now…

[name]Lemon[/name]

I get your vibe about [name]Beatrix[/name]… and I can so see it for a little girl. [name]Trixie[/name] is super cute! Weird, because I usually stay away from X names . I love that a beatrix can ether be girly girly or a bit of a spunky tomboy personality.
[name]Oliver[/name], [name]Frederick[/name] and [name]Dashiell[/name] and definately leading the way for the boys. I especially love it with something Zingy like [name]Beatrix[/name] in the mix to tie in [name]Dash[/name].
The CC nickname is a given with [name]Cecily[/name] because our last name is [name]Connell[/name]. [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] is beautiful and it honours my Mum, so that’s a winner! But I just couldn’t do initials CCC… hehe

Is [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Connell[/name] too similar sounding to [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name]? It does sound quite gorgeous, though. I must admit, we’re lucky with our last name, it does seem to roll nicely with a lot of the names I love.

[name]Claire[/name],

Yes, I love how [name]Beatrix[/name] can cross the lines from girly to tomboy just like that! So cool! And, I think [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Frederick[/name], and [name]Dashiell[/name] all have a spunky flavor that make them perfect matches to [name]Beatrix[/name]!

[name]Cecily[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Connell[/name] is gorgeous! I don’t even mind the CCC initials! At least it doesn’t spell something bad! And, no, I didn’t at all think [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Connell[/name] sounded like [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name], honestly!

What are you thinking as far as middle name possibilities? I think [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Georgia[/name] [name]Connell[/name], [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Connell[/name], [name]Viola[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Connell[/name], [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Simon[/name] [name]Connell[/name], [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Peter[/name] [name]Connell[/name], and [name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Edgar[/name] [name]Connell[/name] would be stunning!

[name]Lemon[/name]

[name]Just[/name] plucking these from the air as I go… [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Lucy[/name] is just so sweet!
[name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Penelope[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Alice[/name] [name]Connell[/name] honours

[name]Cecily[/name] [name]Frances[/name] [name]Connell[/name]?
[name]Cecily[/name] [name]Edith[/name] [name]Connell[/name] Honours
[name]Cecily[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Connell[/name] is amazing… but all those C’s? Especially with me being a CC, too… hmm

[name]Penelope[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Penelope[/name] [name]Olive[/name] [name]Connell[/name]

[name]Harriet[/name] [name]Edith[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name] [name]Frances[/name] [name]Connell[/name]

[name]Harriet[/name] [name]Viola[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name] [name]Audrey[/name] [name]Connell[/name]

[name]Viola[/name] [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Viola[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Viola[/name] [name]Clementine[/name] [name]Connell[/name]

[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Frances[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Vera[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Connell[/name]

[name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Ernest[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Oscar[/name] [name]Connell[/name] honours
[name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Hugo[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Henry[/name] [name]Connell[/name]

[name]Oliver[/name] [name]William[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name] [name]Finlay[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Connell[/name] honours
[name]Oliver[/name] [name]Timothy[/name] [name]Connell[/name] honours

[name]Frederick[/name] [name]Oscar[/name] [name]Connell[/name] honours
[name]Frederick[/name] [name]Farley[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Frederick[/name] [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Frederick[/name] [name]Peter[/name] [name]Connell[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] and honours

Wow, you can just go for days… oops  sorry to bombard you!

[name]Claire[/name],

[name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Penelope[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Alice[/name] [name]Connell[/name] honours

[name]LEMON[/name]: Like [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Penelope[/name], but love [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Lucy[/name]!

[name]Cecily[/name] [name]Frances[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Cecily[/name] [name]Edith[/name] [name]Connell[/name] Honours
[name]Cecily[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Connell[/name]

[name]LEMON[/name]: [name]Love[/name] [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Caroline[/name], but [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Frances[/name] is so cute, too!

[name]Penelope[/name] [name]Iris[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Penelope[/name] [name]Olive[/name] [name]Connell[/name]

[name]LEMON[/name]: [name]Penelope[/name] [name]Iris[/name] is my choice, but it sounds very, well, Greek. [name]Penelope[/name] [name]Jane[/name] or [name]Penelope[/name] [name]Sarah[/name] would be pretty!

[name]Harriet[/name] [name]Edith[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name] [name]Frances[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name] [name]Viola[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name] [name]Audrey[/name] [name]Connell[/name]

[name]LEMON[/name]: [name]Harriet[/name] sounds a bit tired to me, but [name]Harriet[/name] [name]Frances[/name] is my pick! What about [name]Harriet[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] to dress it up?

[name]Viola[/name] [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Viola[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Viola[/name] [name]Clementine[/name] [name]Connell[/name]

[name]LEMON[/name]: I think [name]Viola[/name] needs a simpler middle name to tone down her wow-factor, don’t you? [name]Viola[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Viola[/name] [name]Diane[/name], [name]Viola[/name] [name]Frances[/name], [name]Viola[/name] [name]Gwyneth[/name], [name]Viola[/name] [name]Helen[/name], [name]Viola[/name] [name]Margot[/name], [name]Viola[/name] [name]Prudence[/name], [name]Viola[/name] [name]Roseanne[/name], [name]Viola[/name] [name]Susan[/name], or [name]Viola[/name] [name]Therese[/name]? I like [name]Viola[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Viola[/name] [name]Frances[/name], [name]Viola[/name] [name]Helen[/name], and [name]Viola[/name] [name]Margot[/name] best!

[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Frances[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Vera[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Violet[/name] [name]Connell[/name]

[name]LEMON[/name]: Same with [name]Eulalie[/name], though I do quite like [name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Vera[/name]. What about [name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Clara[/name]?

[name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Ernest[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Oscar[/name] [name]Connell[/name] honours
[name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Hugo[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Henry[/name] [name]Connell[/name]

[name]LEMON[/name]: [name]Love[/name] [name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Henry[/name]! Second is [name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Oscar[/name]…

[name]Oliver[/name] [name]William[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name] [name]Finlay[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Connell[/name] honours
[name]Oliver[/name] [name]Timothy[/name] [name]Connell[/name] honours

[name]LEMON[/name]: What about [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Hugo[/name]? I think it is perfection.

[name]Frederick[/name] [name]Oscar[/name] [name]Connell[/name] honours
[name]Frederick[/name] [name]Farley[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Frederick[/name] [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Connell[/name]
[name]Frederick[/name] [name]Peter[/name] [name]Connell[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] and honours

[name]LEMON[/name]: Yes, [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Peter[/name] is amazing! [name]Love[/name] it so much!

I think you should have [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Frances[/name], [name]Viola[/name] [name]Helen[/name], [name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Henry[/name], [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Hugo[/name], and [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Peter[/name]! [name]Trixie[/name], CC, [name]Vi[/name], [name]Dash[/name], Oli, and [name]Fritz[/name]!

[name]Lemon[/name]

So adorable when you put their nn’s together!!!

I do love [name]Harriet[/name] to be honest, and it’s really not used at all here in Australia amongst all the [name]Ruby[/name]'s [name]Olive[/name]'s [name]Audrey[/name]'s and [name]Evie[/name]'s.

Okay, [name]Hugo[/name] was just made for [name]Oliver[/name]. Well done!
I love [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Frances[/name], she is a keeper for now!
What about [name]Viola[/name] [name]Joan[/name]? It honours… or is it just too dusty? [name]Jane[/name] is prettier. I love [name]Viola[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]! Could almost get [name]Violet[/name] as a nn from those too.
[name]Frederick[/name] [name]Peter[/name] is divine.

I am loving all of these! I am going to go and ponder these over lunch!
Thanks for your input, lemon. You have impecable taste!
Bye!

Thanks for the compliment, [name]Claire[/name]! You have stellar taste as well!

Okay, so glad you’re in love with [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Hugo[/name], [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Peter[/name], and [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Frances[/name]! My issue with [name]Viola[/name] [name]Joan[/name] is the repetitive O sound, so I do prefer [name]Viola[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. However, I love [name]Viola[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] very much!

I meant that [name]Harriet[/name] seemed tired in that it sounds a bit old and dusty, not vintage-cool, in my opinion. But, again, that’s just my opinion! I don’t think it quite has the same whimsical feel as, say, [name]Beatrix[/name] and [name]Cecily[/name] and [name]Viola[/name] do. Speaking of, where did [name]Beatrix[/name] go?

Have fun pondering names over lunch! [name]How[/name] many children do you want to have?

[name]Lemon[/name]
