It is quite possible that my son will be the last great grandchild of my late paternal grandmother [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. Her Hebrew name was [name_f]Rachel[/name_f]. I would like my son’s middle name to be in honor of her, either beginning with an “R” or otherwise connected to [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Rachel[/name_f] (meaning: ewe). We want the name to be Jewish (or at least Jewish-friendly, if that makes sense) or, even better, Hebrew.
So far, we have [name_u]Lior[/name_u] (pronounced lee-OR) (which really doesn’t have any connection other than the “r” at the end but which we both like) and [name_f]Ro[/name_f]'i (which both starts with an “R” and which means shepherd, but which I don’t love).
I like [name_m]Raphael[/name_m] too. Some more suggestions: [name_m]Ram[/name_m], [name_m]Rueben[/name_m]/Ruven, or [name_m]Jubal[/name_m] (means “ram’s horn”).
I feel you on this one. My grandmother was a [name_f]Ruchel[/name_f] [name_f]Liba[/name_f] so I’ve given this some thought for myself.
[name_f]Liba[/name_f]/[name_m]Leib[/name_m] has a boy form naturally but [name_f]Ruchel[/name_f] is harder.
I was thinking of possibilities like:
Raziel
Ronen (means song or prayer in Hebrew)
[name_m]Reuven[/name_m]/[name_m]Reuben[/name_m]
[name_m]Raanan[/name_m] - don’t know if you’d ever get that third syllable in English.
Rachamim
Gonna guess that [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] would be the easiest and Rachamim the most challenging as far as English?
I’m fond of Raziel but it doesn’t really have anything to do with [name_f]Rachel[/name_f] meaning-wise. It just kind of is reminiscent of how it looks.
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is a boy’s name that has a nature meaning (rowan being a tree) that is red but I can’t think of any boy’s names aside from unisex picks like [name_f]Briar[/name_f] or Bramble that connect to roses.
I’ve always loved [name_u]Penrose[/name_u] as a middle for a boy, but that might be a bit much for you. [name_m]How[/name_m] about:
[name_m]Roosevelt[/name_m] – rose field
Rosalio – rose
Rosito – rose
[name_m]Vartan[/name_m] – rose
[name_m]Vered[/name_m] – a rose
[name_m]Ram[/name_m]
[name_m]Aries[/name_m] – ram
[name_m]Jubal[/name_m] – ram’s horn
Ramsden – [name_m]Ram[/name_m]'s valley
[name_m]Ramsey[/name_m] – ram’s island
[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]
[name_m]Amos[/name_m] – he was a Hebrew shepherd
[name_m]Ovid[/name_m] – sheep
[name_m]Sheffield[/name_m] – sheep pasture
These contain similar sounds:
The [name_f]ROS[/name_f] sound:
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]
Montrose
[name_m]Rosendo[/name_m]
Roser
Anteros
Elros – means star foam which I think is awesome
[name_m]Prospero[/name_m]
[name_f]Roslin[/name_f]
[name_m]Ross[/name_m]
Thank you all for the helpful suggestions! At the moment, of the names beginning with “R” I am leaning toward Ronen, [name_m]Rafael[/name_m], and [name_m]Reuven[/name_m] (because we really want it to be a Hebrew name). I’m still pining after [name_u]Lior[/name_u] and some other names that end with an “r” but don’t begin with it, including Maor, [name_m]Naor[/name_m] and [name_m]Yair[/name_m]. However, I really think we should choose one of the names that begins with “R” so my father feels like we have really honored his mother.
