Changing my name, thoughts on these?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone! I never liked my name and am looking to change it. So far these names are my favorites:

[name_f]Thalia[/name_f]: everyone in my immediate family has T names, including me and this is the only T name I like. I’m just worried that maybe it’s too “weird” or uncommon? When I google [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] + my last name there’s only 1 other person. [name_f]My[/name_f] current first name is very, very rare, so I wanted something a bit more common, without a lot of spelling/pronunciation problems.

[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]: I like this a lot and it’s more common. It’s not a T name, but I guess I can go by [name_f]Tori[/name_f] for short?

Also really like: [name_f]Marina[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Nina[/name_f]

I also talked to my parents to see what they thought. [name_f]My[/name_f] mom told me not worry about picking a T name if I don’t want to, and to just choose whatever makes me happiest. However, my dad seemed kind of annoyed and wanted me to choose something closer to my own name, which is making me feel a bit guilty.

I’m wondering if anyone has any thoughts on these names, or advice on which one to choose. Thanks in advance <3

I don’t think [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] is weird at all. I know a [name_f]Thalia[/name_f], and she never received any weird comments on her name! It’s a really sweet name. The [name_f]Talia[/name_f] spelling is also rather popular in a few countries, so definitely not too out-there!

Changing your name is a big decision and not always the easiest process, so I think you should make it count and go for the name you love most, that really feels the most like you. Following a pattern is much less important than that, in my opinion!

Thank you, this helped a lot! I think [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] feels unusual to me because I’ve never met anyone with it in real life, and I’d never heard of it before browsing this site. It seems like it’s not as rare as I think. You’re right, I’ll keep thinking about what fits me the best!

I love [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] and it’s not weird at all! It’s really pretty and while still on the more unusual side, it sounds familiar enough.

[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] is beautifully regal, but also a lot more common. And I don’t think you can go wrong with [name_f]Marina[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f] or [name_f]Nina[/name_f]. All lovely choices.

So my question is, which one do you simply love the most? Without worrying if it’s too weird or start with T or not. Good luck!

I would suggest doing the “Starbucks test” to see which name you feel most yourself with. Go to Starbucks or somewhere where they call your name and give them [name_f]Thalia[/name_f], [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], [name_f]Marina[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Nina[/name_f] or any other name you like and try them out one name a day. Spend the whole day only being referred to by one name, and each day for a week do a different name. It just gives you a glimpse of how people will react with you, how you’ll react to the name, and maybe something will spark and feel like “the one” when you’re hearing it from someone else

I think it’s sweet your mom is okay with you choosing anything and has made it a point you don’t need to worry about sticking to the T if you don’t want, I’m sorry your dad isn’t as open (but at least he isn’t completely disrespecting you by saying he’d refuse to call you anything else but your current name)

I love [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] and definitely don’t think it’s weird! I love that it’s uncommon too because I don’t think it’s a name you’ll ever have to worry about knowing a bunch of girls with while also being well known and easy to say. There’s also the [name_f]Talia[/name_f] spelling which I’m guessing you also know about but I myself also prefer [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] to [name_f]Talia[/name_f] and I’m assuming you do too

If you really wanted a T in the name you could go [name_f]Marina[/name_f] → [name_f]Martina[/name_f] or [name_f]Nina[/name_f] → [name_f]Trina[/name_f] which I’m not sure you’d like as much but they are options that are super similar to what you like

I’m also unsure as to why you’re changing your name but maybe putting your current first name as your 1st middle name might help (not sure if you have a middle name already or not). Your dad might be able to come around to you changing your name more, especially if it ends up being something different to what your name is now if you kept it as a middle spot (like if your name is [name_f]Trina[/name_f] and he’s good with you changing it to [name_f]Tina[/name_f] it would be weird for you to be [name_f]Tina[/name_f] [name_f]Trina[/name_f]. It gives you more room to look at more names so you’re not as boxed in with what you can pick)

The only other suggestion I have is just talking to your parents about names and getting their opinions on names (“hey what do you think of Jane” sort of thing). If their opinions are getting too in your head or aren’t good for you (or you just dislike everything they say) then this probably isn’t the best option so don’t stress. But I say this because if your name is really rare then it means your name was super important to your parents to use. I don’t have any kids but I love names and I think if my kid wanted to change their name in the future while I’d be accepting of it because I want them to be happy I’d also feel a little stung by them wanting to change a name I loved so much. Maybe having them involved a bit in what you choose will help your dad come around to whatever it is you change your name too because he’ll feel he had a little part in it and that will also give you guys a sweet connection too (again though if this backfires don’t stress because at the end of the day you have to choose a name you love and what fits you over choosing what makes others happy!)

Sorry this is soooooooo much but I hope something in this helps

It says on this website you pronounce [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] with the th as a th not a t. I feel like the other posters are assuming it is pronounced like t. Seems confused to me.

I’d concentrate on finding something you like and makes you feel comfortable. That way, you can feel solid in your choices before putting them forward again to your family or announcing the change

[name_f]Thalia[/name_f] is a lovely choice - I’ve known a few Thalias and it feels warm, bright and melodic. One problem I can see is that I’ve met people with different pronunciation - tah-lee-uh, thay-lee-uh, thah-lee-uh. Which do you use, out of interest?

[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] is solid, sharp, and classic, easy to say and spell, strong and pretty. [name_f]Tori[/name_f] is cute and brings that connection to your familiar, but you’ve also got the options of [name_f]Vivi[/name_f], Vee, [name_f]Tia[/name_f], [name_f]Vicky[/name_f], Vix, [name_f]Vita[/name_f] etc

[name_f]Marina[/name_f] is sparkly but solid, sweet but sassy, full of flair but grounded too.

[name_f]Anna[/name_f] is charming, rugged but elegant, simple but sophisticated

[name_f]Nina[/name_f] is sweet but solid, versatile and zippy.

I like [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] for you, but all are good!

[name_f]Thalia[/name_f] is a magnificent name! [name_f]Beautiful[/name_f], full of history, unique and with a magical meaning. I love the mythological and floral connections!

[name_f]Thalia[/name_f] is uncommon, but definitely not weird at all! To me, it feels majestic and regal.

Well, I see that as a positive aspect, a bonus point! Unless that you want to be discreet and difficult to find online or on official documents. You can also use other usernames online if you want, of course.
However, from my experience, there is always someone in the world with your name, even if that doesn’t appear online!

For example, my first name is not uncommon, but my surnames (I have two ) are not easy to find. However, one day I received a friend request from someone in a different country who shared my first and last name  One day, while searching my name in a program that we use in my workplace, I also found at least a handful of other women, close to my age, with a very similar full name to mine, who live in the same area.

[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] is one of my favorite names! I love its meaning. I love how timeless and sophisticated it sounds. I adore that it is international, has great namesakes and offers multiple fun nicknames! I think it is a wonderful choice too. I’m not sure if you’re looking for a middle name, but [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] would be very captivating!

[name_f]Marina[/name_f], [name_f]Anne[/name_f] and [name_f]Nina[/name_f] are good names! I don’t think they shine like [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] or [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], but that’s just my point of view. [name_f]Marina[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nina[/name_f] could work for you!

I think you should follow your heart and instinct! If you are going through the whole process of changing your name, you need to find the absolute perfect choice for you! Don’t go with a T name just to follow a family tradition. Choose it because you love it and admire it!
Take your time to decide. Test the names with games or with someone you feel that is supporting you in this process. The Starbucks test is a great idea! There are some baby name tests online for expecting parents that may also help you!
Something like this:

I agree with your Mum as it is YOUR name so you should be allowed to decide for yourself what you want to be called. I know it’s hard, but try to ignore what your Dad says because you don’t want to end up choosing a name that you don’t really want just to make him happy. In this case, you should focus on pleasing yourself, not others. Choose a name that makes YOU happy.

[name_f]Thalia[/name_f] is a nice name. I’m surprised there was only one other person with this name + your last name. You could also try looking up [name_f]Talia[/name_f] with your last name?

All the other names you like are nice too and I don’t think you should worry to much about having a T name - it wouldn’t make you any less part of the family. It sounds like your aren’t that into any T names, including [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] so you might want to go with one of the others.
