Chantal?

Why does everyone on here seem to hate [name_f]Chantal[/name_f]? I think it’s so beautiful. I was babysitting a cousin and her friend, and her friends name is [name_f]Chantal[/name_f]. I thought it was gorgeous. I’m a teenager and nowhere near kids, but I’m a planner and love having a list. Why does everyone hate [name_f]Chantal[/name_f]? Is there a bad connection to a celebrity or something that 20-30-40 year olds would know? I can’t think of any [name_f]Chantal[/name_f]'s, but maybe there’s a connection…TV character? Anyways, could anyone give their opinions on the name? Much appreciated,
[name_f]Ell[/name_f]

PS: [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Chantel[/name_f] or [name_f]Chantal[/name_f] better? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you pronounce them differently?

I think most people don’t hate it, they just don’t love it, for many it would seem dated. And while I don’t mind it I do prefer [name_f]Chantel[/name_f]/[name_f]Chantelle[/name_f], I hear [name_f]Chantal[/name_f] as [name_u]Shan[/name_u]-[name_m]TAHL[/name_m] while [name_f]Chantel[/name_f]/[name_f]Chantelle[/name_f] is lighter [name_u]Shan[/name_u]-TELL. I think it is a point where many people are considering it as it feels quite tied to the 80s and 90s at this point. I don’t know of any characters with the name; but surely there would be some out there. There are some french names I like more though.

Chentelle doesn’t have the best image in Australia its more of a lower class name. [name_f]Chantal[/name_f] just seems harsh to me I don’t know. It could have the same image as [name_f]Chantelle[/name_f]? To me Chantelle is Shan-telle and Chantal is Sharn-tarl or Shan-tarl

@ [name_f]Emiliana[/name_f], thanks for the point. As a Canadian, I’d never have thought of the Australian pronunciation. I’m considering moving to Australia in about 5-7 years, so that could be a problematic pronunciation if I were to ever consider [name_f]Chantal[/name_f] as a first name. Thanks

Honestly I quite like it - spelled [name_f]Chantal[/name_f]. I think she was a [name_m]French[/name_m] saint. I don’t like [name_f]Chantel[/name_f] or [name_f]Chantelle[/name_f].

I think the majority of people would class it as tacky/lower-class/dated or what have you, which is sad because it’s very pretty and a very legitimate name with a strong history.

I would pronounce it [name_m]SHON[/name_m]-tell.

In all seriousness, two of the classiest girls I know are named [name_f]Chantal[/name_f]. One is from a very rich family, the other one is just an all rounded hard worker who went to university on a full scholarship via extra curricular activities.

I don’t particularly care for the name, but I don’t hate it. Everyone I know named [name_f]Chantal[/name_f] is in my age group though.

Actually, yes, that is very true. It is seen as a working class name here, so I guess it’s beauty is lost in our neck of the woods. A good rule of thumb in Australia is that most names (unless otherwise specified/corrected) will be pronounced phonetically - at least in South Australia, so spelling and pronunciation is important. E.g I love [name_f]Elena[/name_f] pronounced the American way; but I know most people here would assume it’s pronounced like [name_f]Elina[/name_f]. I know one girl who is named [name_f]Elena[/name_f], who doesn’t go by her name anymore because she was so tired of correcting people.

I’m Australian too and I think [name_f]Chantal[/name_f] is pretty…much classier than [name_f]Chantelle[/name_f]/[name_f]Chantel[/name_f]

[name_f]Ella[/name_f], I don’t think so to many people Sharn-tarl and [name_u]Shan[/name_u]-tarl are quite similar. As someone with a lower class name don’t let that bother you [name_f]Chantelle[/name_f]/[name_f]Chantal[/name_f] is lovely. Most elle names are low class Narelle, [name_f]Chantelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Rochelle[/name_f] as well as Shapelle are all quite low class.
@sodallas the only [name_f]Elena[/name_f] I know says her name [name_f]Elina[/name_f] and thats how I like it.

I prefer the look of [name_f]Chantelle[/name_f] to [name_f]Chantel[/name_f] or [name_f]Chantal[/name_f].

However it is spelled I prefer the pronunciation [name_u]Shan[/name_u]-tell to [name_m]Shon[/name_m]-tell. I’ve never heard the pronunciation Sharn-tarl or [name_u]Shan[/name_u]-tarl in real life (can see how it would be a possibility though). If I did I’d think they were trying to make themselves sound fancy.

Whatever the spelling, it feels very dated to me sorry.

There is a [name_f]Chantelle[/name_f] on this years block (Aussie tv) where they seem to be pronouncing in [name_m]Shon[/name_m]-tahl. Back in the UK it’s seen as a very low class name, and up to a few days ago I’ve only heard it said [name_u]Chan[/name_u]-telle- which might have something to do with my dislike and association with it. I prefer the [name_f]Chantal[/name_f] spelling and [name_m]Shon[/name_m]-tahl pronunciation out of the 2.

I like both so I am a little torn, I’d probably only use the American/Spanish pronunciation in the middle name spot, for me there is a difference between [name_f]Elena[/name_f]/[name_f]Elina[/name_f]. [name_f]Elena[/name_f] almost feels like it needs a grave accent over the E for pronunciation.

It’s unusual for people to pronounce it that way; but I think some people choose it in the hope that it will be a bit more of a postive association and feels more unique to the ear. The vast majority say [name_u]Shan[/name_u]-[name_m]TELL[/name_m].

Either way, if you like it’s pretty.

Thanks again everyone!

It just sounds like a mean girl. Best friends with [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f] and [name_f]Brittany[/name_f].

I knew a [name_f]Chantal[/name_f] and she wasn’t the nicest woman. However, I don’t dislike the name if spelled and pronounced correctly but I’ve seen so many strange spellings that the name is now devoid of any charm for me. I do think that there a prettier [name_m]French[/name_m] names out there to choose from so it’s not a favourite of mine.
