Character Names For Whimsical Urban Young-Adult Fantasy

My story (I call it a ‘story,’ although it’s well over 200 pages long by now) is about three-quarters done, and I’ve changed the names of some main characters several times already. My little sister, who’s my biggest fan AND my biggest critic, said she didn’t like some of the names, but wouldn’t elaborate on the subject.

The story’s set in modern-day [name]Washington[/name], D.C., and is a slightly silly fantasy story about a bunch of eighth graders whose varied and untrained magical powers get them into all kinds of bizarre trouble. I’d say I’m aiming it at readers from age 10 to 13. Anyway, I’d love some alternative name suggestions.

Here are the characters:

*[name]Phineas[/name] [name]Fenton[/name], called “Phin.” He’s the narrator, main character, and the only one whose name is totally set in stone. He’s small, with red hair and braces, seems younger than thirteen, and can be quite immature, hyperactive, and overly idealistic, making him a generally unreliable narrator. That said, he’s a great friend and probably the most enthusiastic character. I’ve had his name floating around in my head for about seven years, without knowing how I was going to use it.

*The [name]Wong[/name] twins, Phin’s close friends. I’ve called them [name]Luc[/name] and [name]Jules[/name] [name]Wong[/name], short for [name]Lucien[/name] and [name]Julien[/name]. They’re both very eccentric and intelligent, in different ways. Their mother is a French actress and their father is a Chinese-American historian. [name]Luc[/name] is a great artist and always has his head in the clouds, but although he often seems stupid and careless, he’s extremely observant and surprisingly responsible. He’s a gentle giant, has spiky hair and glasses, and wears lots of bright colors. [name]Jules[/name] is very skinny and angular, with a ponytail and baggy black clothes. He’s sarcastic and cynical and uses a lot of long words and very old-fashioned slang. [name]Jules[/name] has about eight different bizarre and crippling phobias, which he’s always trying to cure, never with much success (but causing much hilarity). Although he’s very smart, nothing ever seems to go right for him. The two brothers bicker constantly and disagree on everything, but are very close. In the current draft of my story, their birth certificates read [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Lucien[/name] [name]Wong[/name] and [name]Alexander[/name] [name]Julien[/name] [name]Wong[/name] (but they have to go by middle names due to extenuating circumstances in the plot). However, it was originally [name]Lucien[/name] [name]Jefferson[/name] “[name]Jeff[/name]” [name]Wong[/name] and [name]Julien[/name] [name]Hamilton[/name] “[name]Ham[/name]” [name]Wong[/name], and any combination of those names-- or similar ones-- would work.

*[name]Magdalena[/name] [name]Camille[/name] Parasol-- Phin’s best friend, and the principal’s daughter. I want her name to be as flouncy as possible, and she never goes by a nickname. It’s been Magdalia, [name]Magdalena[/name], [name]Magnolia[/name], Magnificence, Aubrietta, and Citronella in different drafts. She’s tiny, blonde, and chubby, and she wears very frilly feminine clothes. Despite her girly mannerisms, girly hobbies, and girly taste in basically everything, she’s a self-proclaimed ‘criminal mastermind’ who is always creating mischief and trouble, is a black-belt, and has a giant pet snake named [name]Ichabod[/name]. She’s got her dad wrapped around her finger and is wonderfully manipulative and sneaky.

*[name]Rhonda[/name] Blenkinsopp-- Phin’s beloved chorus teacher, who he calls by her first name. She’s a (rather frumpy and unattractive) mermaid and teaches from inside a huge tank of water that has to be wheeled around. Everyone treats this as totally normal for no apparent reason.

*[name]Roberta[/name] [name]Joy[/name] Nobbs-- This is the one whose name is the least certain and has changed the most. She’s the new kid, very quiet, thin, and plain, and is not very nice to Phin at first, though they end up becoming good friends. Her mind is more straightforward and direct than the other characters, and she’s the most action-oriented. In my original draft, her name was [name]Matilda[/name] and Phin nicknamed her “[name]Matt[/name].” Then I remembered that I already have a character named [name]Magdalena[/name], and that [name]Matilda[/name]'s already been used in another famous story about kids with magical powers. I switched to [name]Roberta[/name] so that Phin could call her “[name]Bob[/name] Nobbs,” but I was wondering if that was too similar to ‘[name]Rhonda[/name].’ I was also considering [name]Robin[/name], or another boyish name.

[name]Hi[/name] there. I really like your main character’s name. I wasn’t so sure about [name]Lucien[/name] and [name]Julien[/name] [name]Wong[/name] until I read their mother was French, otherwise I would have suggested more credible Chinese-American names, like [name]Kevin[/name], [name]John[/name], [name]Daniel[/name]/[name]Danny[/name], [name]Brian[/name], [name]David[/name], and [name]Michael[/name]/[name]Mike[/name]. I think Aexander and [name]Thomas[/name] work very well. I wonder if [name]Julien[/name] and [name]Lucien[/name] are too similar?
Anyway, I liked [name]Magdalena[/name] until I read she had blonde hair. I think Citronella or [name]Magnolia[/name] would be much better for a blonde. I think [name]Rhonda[/name] in nice, but if she is a mermaid, possibly a more nautical surname? Like, say, [name]Rhonda[/name] Nauticus.
As for the new kid, [name]Roberta[/name], I don’t think its perfect. Other girl names with potential boy nicknames are [name]Indigo[/name] ([name]Indy[/name]) [name]Domenica[/name] ([name]Nick[/name]) Rudolpha ([name]Rudy[/name]) [name]Georgiana[/name] ([name]George[/name]) [name]Henrietta[/name] ([name]Henri[/name]) [name]Francesca[/name] ([name]Frankie[/name]) [name]Veronica[/name] ([name]Ron[/name]/[name]Ronnie[/name]) [name]Christina[/name] ([name]Chris[/name]) [name]Alexandra[/name]/[name]Alexandria[/name] ([name]Alex[/name]) [name]Andromeda[/name] ([name]Andy[/name]/[name]Andie[/name]) Antonelle ([name]Tony[/name]) etc…
Another thought is the nickname [name]Clover[/name], which you can get by a Cl- first name and V- middle name. Such as [name]Clementine[/name] [name]Veronica[/name], which also has the nn [name]Clem[/name].

Oh my gosh, [name]Clover[/name] is such a cool name… and so is [name]Clementine[/name], for that matter. Actually, I like that even better than the character-formally-known-as [name]Magdalena[/name], even though I think you were suggesting it for the-character-formally-known-as-[name]Roberta[/name].

I don’t really like the sound of the name [name]Roberta[/name], and her dad’s name isn’t [name]Robert[/name], so it doesn’t really make a lot of sense why anyone would pick it (although her dad’s name is [name]Harley[/name], so clearly she won’t be named after him). Your suggestions are cool-- I never even though about calling her [name]Nick[/name] or [name]Henry[/name]. Those are ones you really don’t hear for girls, and I like that idea. I couldn’t do [name]George[/name], though, because I had a major female character called [name]Georgie[/name] in another story, and I don’t want to get them mixed up!

I do think [name]Lucien[/name] and [name]Julien[/name] sound really similar, but in the story, nobody calls them by their full names-- they go by [name]Luc[/name] and [name]Jules[/name], unless they’re in trouble. Their dad isn’t really ‘Chinese’-- he was born in [name]America[/name], identifies as American, has an American first name, and specializes in American history-- but their mom was born in [name]France[/name], and her English isn’t very good. I do kind of like the [name]Alex[/name] and [name]Thomas[/name] idea, though, especially since there are so many weird names in this story, it’d be nice to have some normal ones to balance it out. Thanks so much for your help!

Good luck! You’re story sounds really interesting. I have a few stories going as well and I always change the names a few times. My only other thought for [name]Roberta[/name] would be to name her Harlequin after her father (assuming her parents are eccentric) and call her [name]Harley[/name] for short, although that is a little too close to [name]Harley[/name] [name]Quinn[/name] from Batman.

What if you call [name]Roberta[/name], [name]Bertie[/name]?

For [name]Roberta[/name] [name]Joy[/name] what about

[name]Hallie[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] Nobbs
[name]James[/name]/[name]Jaime[/name] [name]Gloria[/name] Nobbs
[name]Erica[/name] [name]Joy[/name] Nobbs
[name]Tori[/name] [name]Georgina[/name] Nobbs
[name]Nicola[/name] ([name]Nicki[/name]) [name]Joy[/name] Nobbs
[name]Dominique[/name] [name]Joy[/name] Nobbs
[name]Frances[/name] [name]Joy[/name] Nobbs

Oh, background on the character currently known as [name]Roberta[/name]… you’re not supposed to know who her dad is at first, because he’s an important not-very-good character-- more of an annoyance than a villain-- so I can’t name her after him. Her parents were never married or in a serious relationship, and her dad doesn’t actually know she exists. This doesn’t cause any angsty strife, but she does use it to her advantage later on.

That said, I love how she was the hardest character to name and I now have a wealth of options for her! The ‘tomboyish nickname’ isn’t meant to be something she chooses for herself-- it’s something that the narrator protagonist bestows upon her because he is a notorious nicknamer. So it would be more on the side of ‘silly’ than ‘cute’-- like [name]Frank[/name] rather than [name]Frankie[/name], or [name]Joe[/name] rather than [name]Jo[/name].

I especially like [name]Frank[/name] short for [name]Frances[/name] or [name]Francine[/name], [name]Joe[/name] short for [name]Josephine[/name], [name]Nick[/name] short for [name]Nicola[/name] or [name]Dominique[/name], and [name]Harry[/name] short for [name]Henrietta[/name] or [name]Harriet[/name] (though that may be a bit too much like [name]Harriet[/name] the Spy, since they share a few traits). I also love the nickname ‘[name]Jim[/name],’ but I feel like there aren’t any long girly names that it could fit.

What about [name]Jemima[/name] nn [name]Jim[/name]?

You could also do [name]Francesca[/name] nn [name]Frank[/name], and do a play on words - “[name]Frank[/name] is being very frank today.” lol I guess you could do the same for [name]Nick[/name] - “[name]Just[/name] in the [name]Nick[/name] of time.” As far as [name]Jim[/name] goes, I agree with [name]Jemima[/name] since all the letters are there, or [name]Jimena[/name] which is Spanish.

^ What? Okay…

Anyway, I like the matchy-matchy twin boy names; I like [name]Magdalena[/name] and [name]Magnolia[/name], I think they would both work; I don’t really like [name]Rhonda[/name] as a name, but it works for the character; and something like [name]Juliet[/name]/[name]Juliette[/name]/[name]Julietta[/name] nn [name]Jett[/name] could work for the last character. The only name I have a real problem with is [name]Phineas[/name] [name]Fenton[/name]. It’s just so similar to [name]Phineas[/name] [name]Flynn[/name], from [name]Phineas[/name] and Ferb. The red hair, the size, the age, the enthusiam, hyper-activity and idealism. Sorry.

“[name]Roberta[/name]” strikes me as a [name]Dominique[/name] for some reason ([name]Dom[/name] or [name]Nick[/name] for short). “[name]Magdalena[/name]” seems more of a [name]Penelope[/name] or a [name]Gwendolyn[/name] ([name]Gwendolyn[/name] seems like a “power-girl” name). =) [name]Hope[/name] this helps!
