Character names -- Latin American historical fantasy

(As I write this, I’m realizing that I inhabit an extremely specific niche when it comes to the stories I write, but that’s a different problem.)
[name_f][/name_f]so! I’m working on a story that’s essentially what’s described in the title – the plot is still in the workshopping phase, but the atmosphere is designed to be a blend between my own Latin American (Venezuelan) culture/heritage/experiences and my lived experiences of the [name_f]English[/name_f] countryside (I have no idea if I’m explaining this properly so please let me know if you need clarification!), along with vague fantasy elements.
[name_f][/name_f]At any rate, I’ve already named one of the characters [name_f]Flor[/name_f] (sorry, new to this site and have no idea re formatting in name links), which translates to ‘flower’ in Spanish and is just in general a sound, word, name I associate with the story significantly (it’s very atmospheric in precisely the right way), but I’m struggling on the other. (This story will have two primary characters who the vast majority of it focuses on, and naming minor characters is normally much more easy for me.)
[name_f][/name_f]tl; dr:
[name_f][/name_f]Any suggestions of female/gender-neutral names ideally of Latin American origin or directly from Spanish (although traditionally [name_f]English[/name_f] names are also potentially an option??) that have some sort of atmospheric, nature-y (sorry) connotation, and sound all right with the name [name_f]Flor[/name_f]?
[name_f][/name_f]so far my method has been going through a list of the names of my never-ending primas and seeing if I like any, which, now that you mention it, has an incredibly low success rate, because half the people in my family are named [name_f]Maria[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f]

thank you so much for the help!! I really appreciate anything anyone has to say <3

oh and to add !! because I am incredibly forgetful:

[name_f][/name_f]
    [name_f][/name_f]
  • unfortunately there’s next to nothing I can say about personality traits or physical traits that’ll make it more helpful, my writing brain is incredibly unhelpful in that it won’t have more than four coherent thoughts about a work in progress until i’ve named every single character
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • (however, the unnamed character will probably be the more down-to-earth one (out of her and Flor))
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • and re historical fantasy, the names don’t have to be historical or restricted to any kind of time period, that’s more a note to myself on how I want to structure the story in that there’s no clearly visible 2025 technology or events, so it’s not in any way anchored in historical accuracy (although as a historian it does hurt me to say that)
  • [name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

I hope that makes things more helpful!! and like I said, if there’s anything crucial I spaced on please let me know

i don’t think this is a good list (things don’t totally meet the criteria, just off the top of my head) but oh well
[name_f][/name_f]from my spanish knowledge (second language) these should at least work in the language

[name_f][/name_f]

alma/alba
[name_f][/name_f]cielo
[name_f][/name_f]eva
[name_f][/name_f]jimena (or ximena)
[name_f][/name_f]julieta
[name_f][/name_f]ofelia
[name_f][/name_f]rosario
[name_f][/name_f]xochitl

that’s…definitely better than anything I would’ve come up with, to be honest. really like [name_f]Julieta[/name_f] off that list (maybe it’s the mix of it also having at least for me the [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] & [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] connotation?), [name_f]Ofelia[/name_f] as well! this gave me the idea to check out names that actively have that resemblance slash symbolism in both languages, so thanks for that as well!

Some nature names, some that just fit the vibe! Maybe…
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Estrella[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Luz[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Violeta[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Silvia[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Irene[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f]

The description of the story is making me think of Latin American magical realism in the style of [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] García [name_m]Márquez[/name_m], [name_m]Julio[/name_m] Cortazar, or [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] Allende! I think that may have influenced some of my name suggestions.

[name_f]My[/name_f] sister is travelling in [name_m]South[/name_m] [name_f]America[/name_f] at the moment. She’s sent me these name sightings from [name_f]Belize[/name_f] (because she’s a gem for nurturing my name nerdia), maybe some will provide some inspiration for your character :crossed_fingers:

how on earth did I miss [name_f]Marisol[/name_f]? I adore the name and it must have just slipped my mind. thank you so much for all of these awesome lists, everyone! (García [name_m]Márquez[/name_m] fan here as well!) definitely will be using one of these for the current story, and keeping them on file in the future as well!
