Character Relationships?

What are some relationships/dynamics between your characters that you find particularly fun to write (Whether they be romantic, platonic, or familial)? Have you written any particularly sweet or sad moments with them that you want to share?

Personally I love writing Hyacinth and Caprise, they’re childhood friends and are always stubbornly there for each other.

EDIT: Decided to elaborate on Caprise and Hyacinth because I love them so much:

Basically they met when they were both around 4-6ish. Hyacinth had gotten yelled at by his emotionally abusive parents (they cooled off as he grew up but the damage they did never really went away) and just ran. He ended up at Ardour House, a coffeehouse owned by Caprise’s parents. The two didn’t interact very much at that specific time, she basically just asked him to dance with her to cheer him up, to which he refused, but they did share a hug. Caprise’s father ended up being the one to console Hyacinth and handing him off to a friend of Hyacinth’s parents who was conveniently there to bring back to his very worried and slightly enraged family.

After that Hyacinth started visiting Ardour House more and eventually took Caprise up on her offer to dance. During the story they’re both 16 and so have been friends for at least 10 years.

Despite being around the same age, Caprise is sort of like an older sister to Hyacinth, she’s fiercely protective of him (she gave his boyfriend Orpheus an entire “hurt-him-and-I’ll-break-your-bones speech” and FOLLOWED through on that when they broke up [okay not the break-your-bones-part but still she was MAD]) and always tries to make him feel like he’s loved and valued for who he is.

Hyacinth for his part is one of the only people who makes an effort to really know Caprise. As fond as they are of her, a lot of the patrons of Ardour House mainly see her as their cheerful brewmaid, that combined with her kind and caring nature causes her to bury her own negative feelings, which Hyacinth will absolutely not stand for. Even if they’re not performing or talking or eating, he still stays by her side, because he still cares about her.

Essentially they’re platonic life-partners.

Capri-sun and Hi-C BROTP (whoo juice joke).

I’m so glad another thread like this exists now. I’ve got so much to say about so many characters. :face_holding_back_tears:

This is going to be a long one, so buckle in!

  1. [name_f]Skyla[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] and [name_f]Harper[/name_f] [name_f]Annamarie[/name_f] Mortenson - sisters.
I’ve always imagined [name_f]Skyla[/name_f] and Harper’s relationship as being super sweet and important for both of them, as they reveal sides of themselves to each other that they rarely or never do for others. [name_f]Skyla[/name_f] acts like a tough, rambunctious little brat with an attitude problem, especially in the face of authority. But at her core she’s a needy little kitten who wants to be coddled like a princess, and [name_f]Harper[/name_f] makes her feel listened to and appreciated since their emotionally stunted, distant parents cannot. [name_f]Harper[/name_f] is reserved and reclusive by nature and isn’t trusting of anybody aside from her siblings. Her closest thing to a friend at school is a bubbly girl named [name_m]Skipper[/name_m] McCloud, but even then, [name_m]Skipper[/name_m] had to try really hard to get [name_f]Harper[/name_f] to accept her presence. With [name_f]Skyla[/name_f], however, [name_f]Harper[/name_f] drops her walls and becomes more animated and open, acting motherly to [name_f]Skyla[/name_f] and giving her affection whenever she demands it. Harper’s behavior towards [name_f]Skyla[/name_f] is a manifestation of the affection and attention she also craves, as she’s often the most overlooked by her parents as the middle child. All in all, I think their relationship is the most fun and heartwarming for me to write out of the main cast.

  2. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Ingmar[/name_m] Mortenson - wife and husband.
Ugh, the relationship between these two has always been so fun to explore through the lense of happiness turned tragedy. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] were raised in what was effectively a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] cult, and they’d only a few brief interactions between the ages of 10 to 22 before they finally began dating proper, but their parents disliked each other and disapproved of their relationship, especially considering that [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] was technically already seeing another man named [name_m]Geoffrey[/name_m] Gilchrist, who was the prideful, goody-two-shoes son of a pastor and highly liked by Elizabeth’s parents. Nevertheless, her parents’ disapproval actually spurred on [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] to continue seeing [name_m]Henry[/name_m], and it was a ton of fun to engage in several weeks of joyous rebelliousness. However, this harmless fun came crashing down hard when [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] discovered she was pregnant. She tried to hide it, but it was only a matter of time before her parents found out. When they did, they were absolutely furious. How could their daughter commit a sin as grave as fornication, especially knowing that the consequences were going to reflect very poorly upon the family? It was unacceptable. However, abortion was off the table, yet a premarital pregnancy couldn’t be hidden for long. Elizabeth’s parents pursued the only option left. They negotiated with Henry’s parents to arrange [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and Henry’s marriage, effectively rocketing them both into adulthood before they were adequately prepared, forcing them to give up their goals and become a family. No party was happy in this, and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] wasn’t even sure if she truly loved [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. Regardless, they married and birthed their first child and only son, [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]Torquil[/name_m], seven months later. Seventeen years down the line and two more children later, [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and Henry’s relationship has fizzled out in every department. Meaningful communication is all but nonexistent between them, and they’re both too absorbed in their duties to spend quality time together. [name_f]Every[/name_f] private interaction has this undercurrent of tension and discomfort, and neither want to confront these deeply rooted issues for fear of ruining what little they already have. It’s a deeply depressing dynamic to write, but by [name_m]God[/name_m] if it isn’t thought-provoking and engrossing.

  3. [name_f]Stormy[/name_f] [name_m]Reynolds[/name_m] and [name_m]Rex[/name_m] [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] Guanzon Panganiban - best friends.

On a more lighthearted note, there’s this minor duo I enjoy writing whenever they’re even slightly relevant. [name_f]Stormy[/name_f] and [name_m]Rex[/name_m] are best bros in the 11th grade who’ve known each other since elementary school and share a passion for soccer, and they both play on their school’s soccer team. They’re two peas in a pod; if [name_f]Stormy[/name_f] is having an anxiety attack right before a game because he ran out of his meds, you can bet that [name_m]Rex[/name_m] is there to show his support. If [name_m]Rex[/name_m] starts having an asthma attack out on the field, you know that [name_f]Stormy[/name_f] has his inhaler on standby. If one tells a stupid joke, they both laugh. I like them as a wholesome, platonic friendship that is rare but special. [name_f]Stormy[/name_f] & [name_m]Rex[/name_m]: ultimate BROtp.

  1. [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] McCaffrey and Evangelos Panteleiou Othonos - best friends at church.

[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and Evangelos, or “Vangelis” as he’s frequently called, attend the same [name_m]Christian[/name_m] Orthodox church yet never interact outside of that due to their differing occupations- [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] being a junior in high school and Vangelis being a 21-year-old man who works at the church underneath his father, Panteleimon Othonos, who holds the occupation of pastor. Nevertheless, [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and Vangelis have always been friendly and open with each other, Caroline’s spunky, southern belle charm and Vangelis’ tender, warm and amicable demeanor blending nicely into a casual friendship of mutual respect and silly banter. [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] was even kind enough to buy Vangelis a new phone for his 21st birthday after his old one broke, an act of care Vangelis wasn’t used to receiving, as it was him who was used to showing others care and consideration. Their relationship isn’t that important to the overall narrative, but I enjoy them interacting whenever I get the opportunity!

Alright, that’s all I can come up with for now. I’ll update whenever I get another rush of energy and inspiration.

The Mortensons certainly sound like an interesting family! I like the idea of Elizabeth’s suffocating lifestyle being the catalyst for more misery later in life, especially she’s now going to be left wondering “what if?” I’m interested in the gradual deterioration of their marriage, especially considering they had two more children. Speaking of, Skyla and Harper’s relationship is really adorable and I like the idea of Harper treating Skyla how she herself on some level would like to be treated (mood, honestly).

Stormy and Rex sound like they’d be “those two guys” that are always together and fun to watch.

Caroline and Vangelis sound like they’re going to develop that sibling energy down the line. Although I am wondering how a junior in high school could afford a whole dang phone. Maybe it was a cheap one but still.

All these overlapping dynamics sound like they’d be really interesting to explore together! I wonder what would happen if you stuck them all in a really intricate escape room…

That’d be really interesting. Thank goodness they’re from 4 separate stories.

I’m gonna come back and describe their dynamics more later… so that might change the outcome.

An elaboration on the relationships.

STORY #1

Hailey, Shannon, Jenna, & Amanda

Shannon and Hailey are barely 2 years apart in age. They’ve been best friends ever since Hailey was born, because Shannon just has that big sister energy. And both Shannon and Hailey were just as quick to welcome Jenna in, not 2 years later, forming their inseparable trio of sisters.
Amanda doesn’t come into the fold until 10 years later. She’s an unplanned child, and her birth nearly kills both her and her mother, all on Jenna’s 10th birthday. Despite all of this, all three girls, and most ironically Jenna, adore Amanda to pieces and spoil her rotten.
Things are going great until 4-5 years later, aka Shannon’s freshman year in college. She leaves as her normal loving and responsible self, but comes back in a harmful relationship with a guy who ultimately poisons her and gives her a blood infection. Hailey’s steaming mad when she learns this, while Jenna feels upset, and Amanda doesn’t really understand anything. Their relationship with Shannon doesn’t return for a while, until Amanda unknowingly welcomes her back.

Hailey, Hannah, & Claire

Hailey and Hannah have been friends ever since meeting each other at the toddlers class at their church. On the first day of kindergarten, they bring Claire into their little fold.
Their group dynamic is quite interesting, especially as they get older. Claire, a bossy and outgoing extrovert, is polar opposites with Hannah, a sweet and quiet bookworm. Hailey is often caught in the middle of the two, and usually doesn’t know who to stand up for.
They still manage to keep their friendship together until the end of high school, and even until the start of college. Then tensions rise when Hailey transfers into the same university as Hannah, driving a divide into their group. Neither Hailey nor Hannah realize just how upset Claire is until they come home for summer break, and Claire just explodes on them. They try hard to explain that Hailey transferred for reasons that had absolutely nothing to do with Hannah, but Claire won’t budge until their friends Natalia and Courtney confirm these facts. It takes a while to regain trust, but they do manage to maintain their relationship through college and into life.

P.S - Claire ends up marrying Hailey’s cousin, Charley, and having two children with him, Chase & Charlotte. They actually have a really happy marriage and family.

STORY #2

Kennedy, Juliette, & Aliya

Kennedy and Juliette, more affectionately known as Juli, were just destined to be best friends. They’re cousins, but behave more like sisters. Born just 3 months apart, with Juli coming first, they have a tight bond for life.
Aliya comes into the picture about a year later, and both Juli and Kennedy adore her. Even though Juli has no blood relation to Aliya, and Aliya to her, they look and act like sisters.
Their group dynamic is wonderful as well. Juli, being the oldest, is the protector and defender. Sure, she’s sassy and loud and bossy, but they love her for it. Kennedy, the middle, is sort of the caregiver, the responsible and just happy-go-lucky member. Aliya, the youngest, is the princess of the group. Drawn to all things ballet and art, she has the sweetest and most creative personality to go with it.

Kennedy, Melanie, Sierra, Lillian, Ariannah, Ashley, Jaidyn, & Isabella

Kennedy and Melanie, both two friendly and bubbly girls, have known each other since they were babies. They met Ariannah at church when they were just 4, and they loved her.
As they grew up, so did their friend group. Ashley and her best friend Isabella joined the fold in 2nd grade, when the 5 girls were put in the same group for a skit. Sierra and her best friend Lillian came in on the first day of middle school. They’re lucky that this happened, because they’ll be the first to admit Sierra and Lillian are the two most mature girls in the group. Melanie has said that Sierra and Lillian are two of the reasons she didn’t become a perverted and obnoxious middle schooler. The last to join the group, Jaidyn, joined in 8th grade when she transferred in to play volleyball. A firecracker and strong-willed girl, she and Ariannah are very similar and clash a lot, but also make the best friends. (Their older sisters, Jordan & Madesyn, also become best friends.)
The real test of their friendship came just before the start of their freshman year of high school. At a back-to-school sleepover Sierra was hosting for Lillian, Kennedy, & Melanie, they receive devastating news. Michael, Sierra’s brother, a rising senior, who they couldn’t contact for hours, was killed in a car crash. Sierra breaks immediately, and neither her friends nor her younger siblings Aidan & Mia know what to do for her. It’s something that she never gets over, not for the rest of her life, although it does slowly subside to the point where she’s able to talk about it. Her friends have literally nothing to do except be there for her, and in the end, that’s all she wants.

Jordan, Jaidyn, & Ashlyn

note: I have so many plans for this relationship but this story is on hold, so all you get is their personalities.

Jordan, Jaidyn, & Ashlyn are all very tightly bonded. They share so many interests, such as volleyball, and their personalities are very similar (they’re all firecrackers).
Jordan, the oldest, is 17 years old when she’s introduced, and almost 18 at the end. She’s the most mature, and is the only one able to control both Jaidyn and Ashlyn at the same time. She’s an incredibly talented volleyball player, and that combined with her mature personality leads her to being the captain of the varsity volleyball team. Despite her more responsible personality, she is a fireball and can be quite bossy, especially when mad. And both of her sisters can tell you that she is scary when mad.
Jaidyn, aged 14 in the story, is the middle girl. She’s probably the most happy-go-lucky out of the three. She loves people and just has that desire to live life to the fullest that her sisters don’t have. Jaidyn is also a very good volleyball player, landing her on the varsity team with her big sister. This has lead to many bonding moments as well as fights, many of which turn quite fiery. Jaidyn may be a happy girl, but she can hold her own, especially with a fiery older sister like Jordan.
Ashlyn, the youngest, being 12, is probably the most feisty of the three. I mean, she kind of has to, with her high-achieving, outgoing, stubborn, and strong older sisters. And she easily has the most friends out of the sisters as well, she’s just a social butterfly, and a little sassy. Ashlyn also plays volleyball, and that’s partly where her feistiness comes from, always playing with two big sisters who are much better and stronger than her. Due to this, Ashlyn’s actually really good, and ends up making the high school JV team in 8th grade.

STORY #3

Elizabeth & Natalya

Elizabeth and Natalya, as many of my other characters, have been lifelong friends. Their parents are friends, and they have siblings similar in age. Their relationship is actually one of my favorites, and it makes me happy to write.
Elizabeth and Natalya are basically opposites in personality. Elizabeth is more quiet, thoughtful, and open, while Natalya is definitely a protector and a little bit of a spitfire. They both share their loves of family, friends, volleyball, and talking together however.
Elizabeth is one of the few people Natalya will actually break and open up to, and as a result knows many secrets that their other friends don’t know. Like the fact that she’s suffering, a lot, from the backlash and comments about the current war and her being both Russian and Ukrainian in heritage. Comments asking her to pick a side, or even some racial things. Or how her mental health and emotional stability has never been and currently isn’t good, something that she tries to hide from other friends.
These two girls never ask too much of each other though. Elizabeth hearing all of Natalya’s secrets is only in exchange for her being Elizabeth’s rock as well, such as when her younger sister Jasmine is bullying her. Jasmine is very direct, and could possibly have some major anger issues. Elizabeth and her older brother James usually end up being her targets, and when she talks, it usually stings. A lot.

Natalya & Lena

Natalya and Lena have what I consider to be one of if not the most beautiful sister relationships that I’ve written. (Helen & Kaylee, Veronika & Aleksandra, Gemma & Vivienne, and Lucy & Lyla are close contenders as well.)
Lena is a very soft and fragile little thing. Natalya (I know, poor girl) has actually almost lost Lena more than once. Lena was a very sickly young child, and Natalya actually thought Lena was dying, back when she was 13 and her sister 10.
However quiet and soft Lena may be, she’s a wonderful listener and a very sweet and patient girl. She knows absolutely everything about her sister, even more than Elizabeth. She knows her sister has been bullied, both in person and online. She knows she’s lost friends. She knows that she’s scarred from the school fire. She knows that her sister has bad mental health and could possibly be depressed. And she knows how concerned she is about her, and that’s something she feels guilty about.
Natalya never makes her sister feel guilty though, ever. As a result, Lena is able to talk to her sister about how scared she used to be as a child. Nothing in their family was ever sugarcoated, meaning 10-year-old Lena was very aware, and very terrified of the possibility that she could die. She is able to talk to her sister about wishing she could’ve experienced more earlier in life. But Lena, bless her little soul, also talks to her sister about her dreams of being a dancer and a singer. And this especially makes me really happy to write.

SQUEE I love these! I mean minus the subtle and blatant tortures of their existence, I hate those (in a good way, they make me sad). [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Natalya[/name_f] are my favorite (funny story, 2 of my favorite actresses have played characters with those names before so that was the first thing I thought of). They’re such sweet friends. (also Natalya’s kind of a mood, get the girl therapy please )

lol that’s funny

I really love [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and Natalya’s relationship too! As for [name_f]Natalya[/name_f] and her mental health and therapy, well yeah, we’re working on it. It’s just that no one really knows she needs it because of how well she’s hiding it.

Let’s do another one!!

[name_m]Jordan[/name_m] & [name_f]Melinda[/name_f]

[name_m]Jordan[/name_m] and [name_f]Melinda[/name_f] (known as Mellie) have a sort of big-sister/little-sister relationship. They’re not related by blood, and didn’t even know each other until Mellie’s freshman year of high school. However, [name_f]Cassidy[/name_f], Jordan’s volleyball coach, is Mellie’s aunt.
They met each other when Mellie’s mom, who was pregnant with her baby sister, developed severe complications. This resulted in her mom being hospitalized, ultimately for weeks. [name_m]Jordan[/name_m] found out when [name_f]Cassidy[/name_f] canceled volleyball to go be with her sister, and [name_m]Jordan[/name_m] pressed for why. When she found out, and went to tell the news to her team, she immediately went to find [name_f]Mellie[/name_f] (though she was interrupted, more later about that), and comfort her.
She finds [name_f]Mellie[/name_f], and they sit and talk for a while. [name_m]Jordan[/name_m] offers the younger girl her phone number, with offers to reach out anytime, which she gratefully accepts.
Anytime turns out to be anytime, whether [name_m]Jordan[/name_m] is in class, volleyball practice, out with friends, eating dinner, or studying. But she takes this patiently because she knows [name_f]Mellie[/name_f] is going through something she’d never want to see her mom go through.
Eventually, Mellie’s mom does turn out fine, with a healthy girl named [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]. But she and [name_m]Jordan[/name_m] remain friends. After everything Jordan’s done for her, from defending her from bullies, skipping volleyball, and patiently listening to 3am phone calls, she can’t just let that go. In fact, [name_m]Jordan[/name_m] was already defending her before they met. [name_f]Callie[/name_f], Jordan’s teammate and rival, is adamant that [name_m]Jordan[/name_m] shouldn’t be wasting her time with [name_f]Mellie[/name_f]. But of course, [name_m]Jordan[/name_m] doesn’t see it that way, and engages in a fiery argument about the importance of friends.

I find this relationship interesting to write, because it might surprise some in a way. [name_m]Jordan[/name_m] has a very strong, outgoing, and fiery exterior, so I love writing her as a softer, more caring girl. She’s also a good 3 1/2 years olde than [name_f]Mellie[/name_f]. [name_f]Mellie[/name_f], meanwhile, is a beautiful, soft-spoken, and dreamy kind of girl. They’re polar opposites, but yet they aren’t, and are able to get along and be there for each other in a beautiful way. And it’s a great way to bring out more of Jordan’s patient, caring, and emotional side.

Note - [name_m]Jordan[/name_m] is [name_f]Jaidyn[/name_f] and Ashlyn’s older sister.

Okay, this is going to be largely unspecific because of recently created both of these characters are, but here we go!

[name_f][/name_f]

For a bit of context, I recently watched Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre [name_f]Dame[/name_f],[name_f][/name_f] and that inspired me to revisit a story concept I had sitting in the back of my mind for some time.

[name_f][/name_f]

You see, in this story, an alternate reality occurs where a domestic terrorist group, inspired by 9/11, decides to attack three of Illinois’ fourteen nuclear reactors, those being located in Grundy County and LaSalle County. The attack occurred in late [name_m]August[/name_m] of 2003, and it absolutely devastated the region. Aside from the injuries sustained by the locals, the release of radiation had a profound impact on unborn and newborn babies in those counties. Many infants/children were born with defects or developed issues related to bodily and mental functions. To cope with the rapidly growing rate of special needs children, the government intervened and installed programs to help parents and families deal with the challenges. Adoption agencies also collected children who were unwanted by their parents for one reason or another. Unfortunately, these agencies were understaffed and unequipped to handle such a high number of kids, thus neglect and maltreatment became common. Rumors eventually spread of this among parents, and many soon became afraid to relinquish their children to state care for a chance of proper medical treatment.

[name_f][/name_f]

Cut to roughly eight months after the attack, and a 25-year-old pregnant policewoman named [name_f]Nathalie[/name_f] Koehler (nee Lindberg) abruptly began her labor and was rushed to Braceville [name_m]General[/name_m] Hospital. Unfortunately, she died from eclampsia during the birth. Her husband, fellow police officer [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] Koehler, arrived at the hospital several hours later only to find his wife deceased and his newborn son, [name_m]Harrison[/name_m], bearing severe birth defects. I won’t go into detail about Harrison’s appearance, but he was born with congenital limb reduction on his left foot, Dysmorphism, Lordosis, and Hyperdontia. Google any of those at your own risk.

[name_f][/name_f]

Despite initially being horrified at his son’s appearance, Atlas’s parental instincts quickly took over and he knew he had to protect his son from societal persecution at all costs. Not relying on anyone else for assistance, not friends, family, and sure as hell not the government, he sought refuge in an abandoned hunting cabin located in Kankakee [name_m]River[/name_m] State [name_m]Park[/name_m], which was a hop skip and a jump away from his family’s native Braceville. While it was by no means an easy transition, [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] was willing to go above and beyond to provide his son with a comfortable, fulfilling life away from the torment and ostracization he would have inevitably experienced in mainstream society.

[name_f][/name_f]

It’s this absolutely devoted father-son relationship that I particularly adore; [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] sacrificed much of his previous cozy life in order to give [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] one, and [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] grows to be eternally grateful for his dad’s support. Yet despite his love and gratitude, [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] yearns to explore the greater world, only for [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] to put a stop to any possibility of that with fearmongering tales to scare him into submission. While this is done out of genuine concern for his son’s wellbeing, it does come across as quite controlling and negatively impacts Harrison’s mental health. Nevertheless, [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] obeys because he doesn’t want to risk losing the only person he has- and the only person who could ever love him. In turn, [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] does everything necessary to take care of his son, for he is the only living relative he has left and is the only thing worth existing for in his life.

[name_f][/name_f]

Despite his controlling nature, [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] does promise to let [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] leave the cabin “when the time is right” and society is at a point where they can readily accept [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] for who he is, appearance and all. This promise is the only hope that [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] clings to in his everyday life, dreaming of the day he can step into Braceville and feel the comfort and kinship of other people- alongside [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], of course.

[name_f][/name_f]

But yeah, I want to stress the depth and importance of [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] and Atlas’ relationship early on into the story, and I want the impact to truly be felt once they’re separated halfway through.
