I tend to like names as practical as possible. Although many long names are beautiful in meaning and sound, most people in reality are called by the one syllable. I love some long pretty names but am most attracted to names that are similar to my own, short and to the point. A name people can remember and place you when they see your face.

I think in a case where you do not actually like the -antha part, and when you intend to call a girl [name]Sam[/name] but feel obligated to choose it in the long form is a good time to just put [name]Sam[/name] on the birth certificate. In that case, I think [name]Lola[/name] got a different package in the mail. Some may say more serviceable as a girl, but I’ve never really liked the name or thought it was a formal name - was seriously shocked as a [name]Bronx[/name] [name]Mowgli[/name] when celebrities started naming their babies [name]Lola[/name] and real people thought it sounded “nice.” [name]Lourdes[/name] “[name]Lola[/name],” yes. [name]Lola[/name], that’s really your whole name, “[name]Lola[/name]”? Not so much. It’s supposed to be short for something also. Whatever [name]Lola[/name] wants.
[name]Max[/name] and [name]Bob[/name]. On the one hand, too close to [name]Sam[/name]. By themselves, not as awful as people seem to be making it out to be. “Uncreative”? I don’t see the law that states everyone must have X number of syllables or come up with an original name that wows. It’s just as fashion-forward as coming up with something outrageous. When’s the last time someone considered naming their baby [name]Robert[/name] when there wasn’t someone in the family to honor? I have [name]Roberts[/name] in my family up the wazoo and I hate the name, not that I love [name]Bob[/name], but that’s what they’re going to be called. Why not [name]Bob[/name]? Some people choose [name]Max[/name] and I think fall into the same trap as Samanthas. I could say I like the name [name]Max[/name], I don’t want to name him [name]Maxwell[/name] or [name]Maximilian[/name] just to call him [name]Max[/name].
I think this is not bad taste, it’s slightly celebrity prerogative though. People get hung up on long forms and tasteful nicknames, most people use their name like a tag. A piece of tape on a mail slot at work, what your friends call you. [name]Lola[/name], [name]Sam[/name], [name]Max[/name], [name]Bob[/name]; [name]Molly[/name], [name]Alex[/name], [name]Jack[/name], and [name]Rex[/name]. It gets to the dumb side of things when parents start thinking [name]Bud[/name], [name]Skip[/name], [name]Lolly[/name], and [name]Trey[/name] are names ([name]Trey[/name] is not a name! It’s like naming your baby [name]Junior[/name] instead of calling him that).
