This is the Moretti family, who are living in Chicago in 1893, during the world fair. The father works as a construction worker for skyscrapers, seven blocks away from his family’s apartment. The mother works as a dressmaker for the wealthiest people in town, sewing buttons and thread on elaborate gowns. They met and married in [name]Italy[/name], and at ages eighteen and twenty-three, sailed for [name]America[/name] for better life. They met up with their distant cousins in Chicago, and eventually acquired jobs and had six children. Their parents and siblings still live on an Italian farm far away. The mother is currently pregnant with her seventh child. At the world fair, the three oldest run off with their friends to visit and see with the dollar they were each awarded with. The two middle walk around with their papa, he promises to take them on the [name]Ferris[/name] Wheel. Mama sits down on a bench to rest with her youngest on her hip. Parched, she gets up and waddles through the crowd, over to the confection stand. as she crosses the middle of the street, a new trolley car races through and she is knocked to the ground unconscious. Screams ring out and a crowd forms around her. A doctor in the crowd begins to tend to her and, eventually, after seeing the commotion, her family finds her. After about twenty minutes, she woke up, but began to go into premature labor. The doctor, a kind man, stays with her, and a small but healthy baby girl is born in the midst of the Chicago World Fair. [name]Both[/name] mother and child live.

The Santorelli family lives in the Lower [name]East[/name] Side, Manhattan in the 1890’s.They both came from whealthy families in [name]Siena[/name]. They fell in love as teenagers but both of their families disapproved of the match and forbid them to see each other so they eloped to [name]America[/name], penniless. Mr. Santorelli works in a butcher shop and Mrs. Santorelli works in a sweatshop sewing shirtwaists from morning till night. The owner of the sweatshop is very harsh and callous, having very little sympathy for tue plight of tye poor working mother, so Mrs. Santoreeli is forced to work in gruelling conditions throughout her pregnancy with her seventh child. The baby is actually born in the sweatshop on a cold [name]December[/name] day. Poor Mrs. Santorelli gave birth to her little boy on the floor of the filthy sweatshop with the help of other workers and then had to return to work and hide him until her ten hour shift was over, in order not to lose her job. And she did! The boy lived through all of it and is now a happy and very lucky one year old.
