Charmian

Berries, how do you pronounce the name [name_f]Charmian[/name_f]? I came across it reading [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] a while ago and it intrigued me, now, the [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Bond[/name_m] crazy fan that I am, I’m curious how it’s pronounced. I heard somewhere that [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]'s version is Car-Mee-Un… but wouldn’t [name_f]Char[/name_f]-mee-Un make more sense? Also, which do you prefer?

it sounds like the name of the Pokémon Charmander.

Come on guys, what do you think?

Before I read your post, I pronounced it in my head as shar-maine, because I knew a girl named [name_f]Charmaine[/name_f] pronounced that way and this name reminded me of her. But, putting that aside, I think both Car-me-an and [name_f]Char[/name_f]-me-an make sense, but I don’t really like either of those pronunciations, and it doesn’t strike me as a pretty, feminine name, sorry!

The actress who played [name_f]Liesl[/name_f] on the original Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f] was [name_f]Charmian[/name_f] Carr. Her nickname was Charmy. I’ve only heard that name pronounced [name_f]Char[/name_f]-mee-in and I don’t really love the sound of it. It’s rather harsh, to say and to hear. [name_f]Charmaine[/name_f] is pretty though and rolls off the tongue much more nicely.

I’d pronounce it char-me-in, and it doesn’t sound very feminine, but it’s usable. I would say [name_f]Charmaine[/name_f] is a good alternative but all that reminds me of is chow mein.

I really appreciate all of your pronunciation comments, so thank you! I don’t plan on using this name for anything, not even attracted to it, it’s just that I was confused on how to say it due to a [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Bond[/name_m] fanfic story I’m working on… I know, I know… I’m too old for fanfiction, but who cares? It’s so much fun!
