Chloe

I like the name [name]Chloe[/name] but I think it’s too popular. (Anyone disagree?)

Can anyone suggest another name that has the woodland sprite feeling of [name]Chloe[/name]? I am pregnant with twins and I am thinking [name]Sylvie[/name] and ________. It does not have to be a Greek name (like [name]Zoe[/name] or [name]Ianthe[/name] or [name]Phoebe[/name]). I just want it to have that magical woods feeling. I don’t know if anyone else can relate to this.

My daughter is [name]Eva[/name]. Would it be weird to have an [name]Eva[/name] and an [name]Ivy[/name]? ([name]Ivy[/name] is like [name]Chloe[/name] to me.)

Names that are like [name]Chloe[/name]:
[name]Laurel[/name] - means laurel tree
[name]Daphne[/name] - means laurel tree
[name]Sylvie[/name] - means from the forest
[name]Iris[/name] - a flower
[name]Evelyn[/name] nn [name]Evie[/name] - means hazelnut
[name]Fiona[/name] - this just feels woodsy to me. On another website [name]Fiona[/name] means “vine”.
[name]Freya[/name] - feels woodsy, too.
[name]Hazel[/name] - means hazelnut tree.
[name]Iona[/name] - an island in [name]Scotland[/name]. On the other website, [name]Iona[/name] means flower.
[name]Carmella[/name], [name]Carmel[/name] (Car-[name]MELL[/name]) - means garden
[name]Willow[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] nn [name]Tansy[/name] - [name]Tansy[/name] sounds so woodsy and cute to me. Like a bunch of curling vines.
[name]Melina[/name] - a yellow quince.
[name]Tamsin[/name] - sounds so cute, too.
[name]Rosemary[/name] nn [name]Romy[/name] - rosemary is a plant with a lovely smell.
[name]Flora[/name] - means flower
[name]Penelope[/name] nn [name]Poppy[/name]
Also love [name]Ivy[/name], but I do think it’s too similar to [name]Eva[/name].

I’m not sure I can relate to the magical woods feeling, but some names that remind me of [name]Chloe[/name]'s feel (with [name]Clover[/name] and [name]Clementine[/name] being the closest) are:

[name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Astrid[/name]
[name]Beatrix[/name]
[name]Calla[/name]
[name]Clover[/name] (This one has [name]Ivy[/name]'s feel, too)
[name]Cora[/name]/[name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Carys[/name]
[name]Celeste[/name]
[name]Delphine[/name]
[name]Daisy[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name]
[name]Esme[/name]
[name]Flora[/name]
[name]Gemma[/name]
[name]Hollis[/name]
[name]Lila[/name]
[name]Lillian[/name]
[name]Mabel[/name]
[name]Mirabelle[/name]
[name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Maisie[/name]
[name]Opal[/name]
[name]Poppy[/name]
[name]Romilly[/name]
[name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Sadie[/name]
[name]Sally[/name]
[name]Willa[/name]
[name]Violet[/name]

Good luck!

I think [name]Jill[/name] and [name]Susan[/name] gave some amazing options that totally have the woodsy magical feel of [name]Chloe[/name]! I was also just thinking of [name]Clio[/name] or [name]Cleo[/name], which sound like [name]Chloe[/name] but have their own feel. [name]Clio[/name], which is greek, is the name of the muse of history, and has a magical feel to me  It is not on the charts at all.

Yes, the suggestions are really spot on in terms of the feeling I want. Thanks so much.

I really like [name]Flora[/name] but my husband says no.

Beautiful suggestions, everyone. I really like [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Daphne[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Willow[/name]. I like [name]Ivy[/name] too but agree there’s too much crossover, even with [name]Sylvie[/name].

I think [name]Fiona[/name] is super cute with [name]Sylvie[/name]!

I’m not sure what qualifies as “magical woodsy”-ish to you, but here’s some that are like that for me:

[name]Ailsa[/name] ([name]LOVE[/name] this with [name]Eva[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name])
[name]Cecily[/name]
[name]Clara[/name] (Beautiful with [name]Sylvie[/name])
[name]Elspeth[/name]
[name]Gia[/name]
[name]Iris[/name]
[name]Lilla[/name]
[name]Lorelei[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name] ([name]Love[/name] with the others)
[name]Lucinda[/name]
[name]Luna[/name]
[name]Mila[/name]
[name]Romilly[/name]
[name]Summer[/name]
[name]Vada[/name]
[name]Xanthe[/name] (A possible alternative to [name]Chloe[/name])
[name]Zaida[/name] (Probably too exotic sounding with [name]Eva[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name], but still “sprite” sounding)

I think [name]Chloe[/name] is getting more popular, but not too popular. Only a little more popular than [name]Eva[/name], anyway.

[name]Chloe[/name] is ranked #16, and [name]Eva[/name] is #117. I remember when the name [name]Chloe[/name] was virtually unheard of (I first heard it at camp in the 80’s, but didn’t hear it again for another decade!), and the same goes for [name]Zoe[/name].

It just shows you that you never know what names are going to catch on. I think it’s safe to say that most of us love less-popular names, but in reality, no name is safe from mass popularity. All it takes is one celebrity to use an unheard of or underused name ([name]Beatrix[/name] or [name]Eloise[/name], for example), and POOF!

I love [name]Elspeth[/name]! I am not sure my husband will go for it but it really does it for me!

[name]Glad[/name] you like my suggestion! [name]Elspeth[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name] would be an AMAZING twin set.

I asked him and he said he thinks [name]Elspeth[/name] is hard to say. He said, “I have to say it every time? [name]Elspeth[/name]. [name]Elspeth[/name]. [name]Elspeth[/name].” It was funny the way he said it, it doesn’t come thru when I type it. Is there a nickname? Though a nickname sort of wrecks it. I do like it, anyway. Maybe I can convince him.

Hmmm. I agree that a nickname would kind of undermine the gorgeousness of [name]Elspeth[/name], especially a generic one like [name]Ellie[/name] or [name]Ella[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Elsa[/name] as a nickname? That would be adorable with [name]Sylvie[/name].

[name]Hi[/name] there
I get what you mean with the ‘woodlands/spritely’ feel of [name]Sylvie[/name]. She’s been in my Top 3 names for quite a while now, and I absolutely adore her.
Personally, I think [name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Chloe[/name] feel a little too rhymey, as do [name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Ivy[/name] (though I too adore [name]Ivy[/name]!)

I’m assuming you’re American!? Well, in my state of Australia, [name]Chloe[/name] was the #3 girls name for 2008, so to me she’s too popular! But I guess that doesn’t really impact you! [name]Eva[/name] sits at #38, with [name]Eve[/name] at #68 and [name]Evie[/name] at #61 - the difference in popularity intruiges me!

Anyway, here are the names that popped into my head that fit with [name]Sylvie[/name], sorry for the repeats

[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Cora[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Ophelia[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Adele[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Flora[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Olive[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Matilde[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Iris[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Acacia[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Delia[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Viola[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Anaelle[/name] [ah-NAH-elle]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Lilias[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Anouk[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Annika[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Alice[/name]

Anything there?

I remember seeing some lovely suggestions thrown around by pp~!

Thanks for this list. I really do like some of them and have thought of them myself:

[name]Flora[/name] – I love this but my husband says no. His mother is [name]Florence[/name] and it’s too much like her name. It’s a Jewish tradition not to name children after living relatives. I can’t argue with that. Though it IS a very different name. Right?

[name]Ophelia[/name] – I love this too! I have loved it for years. Is there too much teasing potential? [name]Feel[/name]-ya? Am I prurient? Maybe I’ll start a thread about this.

[name]Josephine[/name] – I was thinking this could be the middle name!

[name]Violet[/name] – Not [name]Viola[/name] but [name]Violet[/name]. I have liked [name]Violet[/name] for a long time. If I used this all 3 girls would have a V in their name. Which is nice.

I mentioned to my husband that [name]Elspeth[/name] is a Hebrew name, and I think that made him more open to it. What would really make him like it is reading it in a novel. I know there’s an [name]Elspeth[/name] in an [name]Iris[/name] Murdoch ([name]Iris[/name] – my favorite writer – I am not crazy about the name though – but I love her books and I also like [name]Sylvia[/name] Plath very much!), The Good Apprentice. What other novels have an [name]Elspeth[/name]? Before when I was pregnant with [name]Eva[/name], he was against the name [name]Eva[/name] until he read an [name]Isabelle[/name] Allende book, [name]Eva[/name] [name]Luna[/name].

Which by the way – [name]Luna[/name] is nice. I like [name]Anna[/name]-[name]Luna[/name]. What does anyone think about that?

[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Anna[/name]-[name]Luna[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Elspeth[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Ophelia[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Flora[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Natalia[/name]

What do you think?

By the way I am in a suburb of New [name]York[/name] City, and [name]Chloe[/name] is around #26 here. It’s popular, though I don’t know any Chloes. (I don’t know that many children though.)

I really like [name]Elspeth[/name], too, and know a lovely [name]Elspeth[/name] who went by [name]Els[/name].

[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Anna[/name]-[name]Luna[/name]: While [name]Anna[/name] fits with [name]Eva[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name], I think [name]Anna[/name]-[name]Luna[/name] is too exotic to fit. (Plus, it reminds me of pantaloons, and I’d worry about “looney” jokes.) :frowning:

[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Elspeth[/name]: I really like this!

[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Ophelia[/name]: Like [name]Luna[/name], [name]Ophelia[/name] feels too exotic to me to fit with [name]Eva[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name], but that’s just me.

[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Flora[/name]: I really like this combo!

[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Natalia[/name]: Like [name]Luna[/name] and [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Natalia[/name] feels too exotic for me with [name]Eva[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name].

[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Blythe[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Beatrix[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Bess[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Clara[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Celeste[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Daphne[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Frances[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Helena[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Isadora[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Imogen[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Lillian[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Maude[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Rose[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Tess[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Willa[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Winifred[/name]
[name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Zelda[/name]

(I think [name]Eva[/name] is gorgeous!)

I just want to add, that if you love the name [name]Chloe[/name] (I think it’s gorgeous!), you should totally use it. As you said, you don’t know any Chloes, and if you don’t think you’ll be bothered by coming across the other Chloes that do exist, that’s all that matters. I think [name]Eva[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Chloe[/name] is great!

The other names on your list aren’t super-popular now, but no name is safe from mass popularity. All it takes is one celebrity to use a seldom heard name, and BOOM! Instant popularity.

I’m not expecting now, but if [name]Annabelle[/name] becomes even more popular when I do have a baby (which it will), I may use it anyway. I could name my baby [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Eliza[/name], [name]Genevieve[/name], or [name]Juliet[/name], which are as obscure now as [name]Chloe[/name] once was, only to find them at the top of the charts in a matter of years.

I know a 20-year-old female [name]Harper[/name] [name]Rose[/name], for example, who can’t be too happy that her name is catching on (and that [name]Rose[/name] is pandemic as a middle name).

A name’s popularity is important to me (and I think it’s important to bring up the issue), but there’s nothing wrong with the love for the name overriding national rankings.

I think [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] would be lovely as twins! Not a big deal [name_f]IMO[/name_f] to have an [name_f]Eva[/name_f] and an [name_f]Ivy[/name_f].

I do love [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] more though! I wouldn’t worry about popularity if you love it. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] and [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] is magical together!

Some others with [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] might be…

[name_f]Aurore[/name_f] (Aw-Roh-re)

[name_f]Fauna[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Francie[/name_f]

[name_f]Yoli[/name_f]
[name_f]Zelie[/name_f] (also beautiful…I love this name)

[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Corinne[/name_f]
