It’s a french name but lots of people say that it sounds like a made-up, jazzed-up version of [name]Crystal[/name]. If you came across a little girl named [name]Christelle[/name] (nicknamed [name]Christy[/name] or [name]Chrissy[/name]) what would you think? Thanks for the feedback

[name]Christelle[/name] is better than [name]Crystal[/name]. I would pronounce the two slightly different. I prefer [name]Christelle[/name]. I wouldn’t say trashy like kibby because I don’t have that connection with it yet.

While it is a name I would never use myself, I don’t think it’s trashy- but I have never been a fan of word names either. To me it’s as bad as [name]Emerald[/name] as a name… But some people like that style, I guess 
I actually prefer [name]Crystal[/name], [name]Emerald[/name], etc. Spelled like the gemstones. I don’t like [name]Cristal[/name], as in the champagne, and [name]Christelle[/name] seems to lack the quiet beauty of [name]Christine[/name] for me and instead is struggling to jazz it up. I don’t like [name]Chrystal[/name] either, which sounds to me like an attempt to blend a religious reference with the gemstone and does neither any favours.
I think [name]Christelle[/name] is a diminutive of [name]Christine[/name]? [name]Christine[/name] is a timeless black dress of a name to me, like [name]Catherine[/name] or [name]Elizabeth[/name].
I must admit that I prefer [name]Chantal[/name] or [name]Christine[/name] to [name]Christelle[/name]. And I’m not even terribly fond of [name]Chantal[/name], as there was a big craze for it in my hometown when I was growing up.
If I wanted to use a more unusual [name]Chris[/name]- name for a girl because I wanted something more exotic than [name]Christine[/name], I would be tempted towards either [name]Christabel[/name], [name]Christiana[/name], or [name]Crisanta[/name] - [name]Crisanta[/name] referencing chrysanthemum flowers.
My first thought was [name]Crystal[/name].
It makes me want to say it like it’s two separate names, [name]Christ[/name] [name]Elle[/name] or Cry-stell if that makes any more sense. I don’t like it much, sorry.

I know a [name]Christelle[/name] stateside and one in [name]France[/name], I’ve always thought it was a respectable name.
Edit: A pretty interesting cultural observation to see is that this French name is fine over there but it’s deemed trashy here while Lilou or Océane are cool here but are considered overused and tacky by a lot of people in France.

I would use the beautiful classic [name]Christine[/name] or [name]Christina[/name] – and, if a nn is desired – use [name]Christy[/name] or [name]Chrissy[/name] as you were thinking.
I don’t understand why [name]Christelle[/name] would be considered trashy? Maybe it’s because I took French in high school and [name]Christelle[/name] was just a commonly used name in the textbooks, but I’ve always found it a refreshing and prettier version of [name]Crystal[/name]/[name]Chrystal[/name]. I am probably drawn to it over [name]Crystal[/name] because of the -elle ending, which I generally adore. I like it much more than [name]Crystal[/name] or [name]Christine[/name], personally. If I used it at all, it’d be as a MN–the [name]Crystal[/name]/[name]Christelle[/name] sound is a bit too dated for me. I think something like [name]Jane[/name] [name]Christelle[/name] would be gorgeous, though.

I’m so sorry to say that it definitely sounds trashy!! For some reason I get the image of a stripper.

I think it definitely depends on where you live, and what the cultural norms are for your area. [name]Crystal[/name] and variants are considered “trailer park” names in parts of the States, and I can see how in those areas an alternate spelling of a [name]Crystal[/name] variant could be seen as three whole layers of yikes. But [name]Christelle[/name] is a legitimately French name. It actually has a beautiful tinkling quality about it, and I can see the appeal. I think if you’re living in an area where French names are common and people will be familiar with the spelling/origin, you won’t have any problems. I just wouldn’t suggest using it in the Deep South.
