Classic or boring?

We have [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] (not sure of the spelling yet) on our short list. Would you consider it a classic, classy, and pretty name or boring? Im a traditional girl at heart.

Nothing wrong with [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] but I prefer [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is beautiful.

[name_f]Catherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is very traditional. It’s a great name, but it is a popular one.

Not boring at all! I’m biased, as [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]'s on my own list, but [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] was my great-grandma’s name, and I met a little girl named [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] ([name_f]Catherine[/name_f]?) a couple years ago and remember being so impressed! It’s definitely classic. It’s got backbone and class to her. And there are so many versatile nicknames–[name_f]Cate[/name_f]? [name_u]Kit[/name_u]? [name_f]Kitty[/name_f]? [name_u]Wren[/name_u]? [name_f]Erin[/name_f], even? Definitely a thumbs up from me!

I think [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is old and boring. I think [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is classic and cute!! Perhaps could be the ability to shorten [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] to [name_f]Kate[/name_f] whereas [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] shortens to… [name_f]Cathy[/name_f]?? Yuck.

If we choose this name we were planning on using nn [name_f]Kate[/name_f] regardless of whether we spell name [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] or [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. Is this not correct? Are [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]'s typically [name_f]Cathy[/name_f] ?

Or you could do like Duchess [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and shorten [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] to [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. Or [name_f]Cate[/name_f] works for Ms. Blanchett, so you have options.

[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is the more “distinguished” choice, I think. [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is classic and perennially popular. It’s a nice choice, though not for me. It always reminds me of “catheter” combined with “urine”. The name’s a urine-filled catheter, to me.

Classic. I prefer the [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] spelling myself but they both work and I don’t think one is more or less boring or dated than the other. I think it’s a beautiful name and it has tons of nickname options. You can go more exotic like [name_f]Katia[/name_f], royal like [name_f]Kate[/name_f], old fashioned like [name_f]Kathy[/name_f], spunky like [name_u]Kit[/name_u], classic like [name_f]Katie[/name_f], 50’s like [name_f]Karen[/name_f], or use a different version as a ‘nickname’ like [name_f]Katarina[/name_f], [name_f]Katrina[/name_f], [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f].

Not typically anything. [name_f]Cate[/name_f], [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Cathy[/name_f], [name_f]Kathy[/name_f], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], [name_f]Catie[/name_f], [name_f]Katie[/name_f], you can use the C or the K if you like. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t listen to people telling you otherwise.

I see nothing wrong with [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] nickname [name_f]Kate[/name_f] or [name_u]Kit[/name_u]. I have only known one [name_f]Cathy[/name_f] and that was her full name.

Anyone else? Is [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] pretty and classy/classic or boring and bland?

To me, the names seem very classic, lovely, and substantial enough, but quite common. A [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] won’t feel like she has a unique name by any means, and nor is the name particularly spicy, but that doesn’t seem to be what you like anyway. I do, however, have a soft spot for the nickname [name_f]Kate[/name_f].

Not boring - to me [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] have a lot of strength and spirit, and [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_u]Kit[/name_u] are nicknames that feel full of personality to me. I’d agree that I wouldn’t necessarily describe it as “special” but it has many OTHER counts in its favor.

I mentioned in the [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] thread that that name feels blank to me even though I wish I liked it. I’d put [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] in the same name class as [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], [name_f]Anne[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], etc…). For whatever reason, with the I-know-it’s-me-not-the-name exception of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], they all feel really interesting to me despite their “classic” status. There’s a solidness to them. You’d never call [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] flimsy -I like that.

I love [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], but would definitely pair it w/something more unusual.

I love [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Kate[/name_f]! And I like the above suggestion of going with a more unusual middle name to balance it out.

I love [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]; it’s a beautiful classic that will never go out of style. All the ones I know spell it with a K, but I think it looks much more sophisticated and regal with a C. The royal and literary connections are awesome. Whichever way you spell it, [name_f]Cat[/name_f]/[name_f]Kat[/name_f], [name_f]Cate[/name_f]/[name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Cathy[/name_f]/[name_f]Kathy[/name_f], [name_f]Katie[/name_f], [name_f]Rin[/name_f], can all be nicknames. Or she could just use her full name- I know one that does.

I love [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Kate[/name_f] but I’m bias! It’s classic and beautiful and has soo many nickname options. I prefer the K spelling to the C though but I don’t know why.

So I definitely vote classic, not boring.

I love [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_f]Kitty[/name_f], but I personally find [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] very boring. Classic, but boring.

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]. I can’t explain it, I just do. I don’t find it boring at all!

I think [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is pretty and classic. It isn’t used much anymore, so it isn’t as old hat as it would have been thirty years ago or so. I really don’t like the nickname [name_f]Cathy[/name_f] though. I would prefer [name_f]Kate[/name_f] or [name_f]Kitty[/name_f] if a nickname is wanted.
