[name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]? I would intuitively say Clementyne like the fruit, but the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation is Clementeen, right? Which do you prefer? I think I prefer tyne, but not by much, and I want to use the more legitimate way, but also the more practical way.
Also, for a nn would [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]/[name_f]Emmie[/name_f]/[name_f]Emme[/name_f] work? I’m not a fan of [name_u]Clem[/name_u], and [name_u]Clemmie[/name_u] is not as cute as [name_f]Emme[/name_f] to me.
I’ve always said Clemen-tyne, having first heard it that way in the song ‘Darling [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]’ and I prefer it, though am aware of the ‘teen’ pronunciation in some places too. I knew a [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] (tyne) through sport at school so that further cemented that way of saying it for me. I think ‘tyne’ is the more practical pronunciation for English speaking countries. Either way, I think they are both legitimate pronunciations and it wouldn’t be hard (or wrong) to go with the one you like best!
I think [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]/[name_f]Emmie[/name_f]/[name_f]Emme[/name_f] works well. [name_u]Clem[/name_u] or [name_u]Clemmie[/name_u] might still get used by others, but it’s easily corrected.
I say “-tyne”. I think [name_f]Emme[/name_f] and co work fine as nicknames, but I have to say that I love [name_u]Clem[/name_u]/[name_u]Clemmie[/name_u] much more - so sweet and distinctive!
I have [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] on my list, pronounced like in the song. My favourite nickname is [name_f]Clea[/name_f]/[name_f]Cleo[/name_f], but I love [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] too -totally works!
I say tyne, but then I pronounce [name_f]Clementina[/name_f] with a teena sound on the end, as per [name_f]Tina[/name_f]. I don’t know if that is accurate, but it’s how I prefer to say the two names.
But in [name_u]America[/name_u] I would probably first say Clementyne, if I see the name written on a list. Because I guess Clementyne is the most popular pronunciation.
I believe that in English it’s usually Clementyne, like in the song. That’s how I would pronounce it if I saw it in writing.
In [name_m]French[/name_m] it’s spelled Clémentine and pronounced like this, with the é sound and the nasal “en”, so it is rather different from the English pronunciation.
