Cleo, Clio or Tessa?

Hello!

We’re expecting our first child in [name_u]March[/name_u], and have a few top name picks! I’d love to hear your thoughts:

[name_f]Cleo[/name_f] (or [name_f]Clio[/name_f]) [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]

OR

[name_f]Cleo[/name_f], [name_f]Ada[/name_f] or [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] followed by the two parents surnames (not sure which way round) - I feel quite strongly that my (Mum’s) surname should get a look in and we shouldn’t default to Dad’s surname, but [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] are family names which I’d also love to use!

I don’t love multiple middle names. I like names that are strong and simple. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think the above names fit the bill?

What do you think? Other name suggestions welcome.

Thanks x

I think [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is absolutely stunning! But I also like the idea of using both parents’ surnames, in which case I still vote [name_f]Ada[/name_f], followed by [name_f]Cleo[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] of all of these. I strongly dislike the spelling “[name_f]Clio[/name_f]”, but [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] is okay. [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] feels incomplete to me, personally.

I think they all work as “strong and simple” names that are also really lovely and wearable! I admit that [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] is far and away my favorite, and [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is beautiful. (I admit to super loving [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], though–a family name for me, too!–so it would make my heart happy to see a little [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]!)

I’m not the hugest [name_f]Cleo[/name_f]/[name_f]Clio[/name_f] fan myself, but I admit to preferring [name_f]Clio[/name_f] to [name_f]Cleo[/name_f]. I love most [name_m]Ad[/name_m]- names, but [name_f]Ada[/name_f] is one I never got into? [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] does sound lovely, though, and [name_f]Ada[/name_f] would be super refreshing to meet!

I’d probably rank them:

[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]/[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]
[name_f]Clio[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]

Good luck!

ETA: I misunderstood the bit about family surnames earlier, but if you love a specific surname, I think that would certainly be a way to go! I remember talking to someone who got her mother’s maiden name once, and she hated it and felt super cheated for not getting a pretty middle name, but this was in her teenage years, and she very well could have changed her mind about that since then! I wouldn’t mind having a family surname, as long as I also had a feminine one, but I’m rather a girly sort and have a unisex name to begin with. I wouldn’t mind being [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_m]Robinson[/name_m] Richlieu “[name_u]Ashley[/name_u] Richlieu” for example, but wouldn’t want to just be [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] [name_m]Robinson[/name_m] Richlieu? Then again, I might feel cheated as [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] [name_u]Carter[/name_u] Gaspardi or [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_u]Reid[/name_u] [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u], but that’s just me. :stuck_out_tongue:

“[name_f]Clio[/name_f]” is really not a great spelling of the name. “[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]” is wonderful, on the other hand. I like all of the options (besides “[name_f]Clio[/name_f]”).

I’d say [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] has an absolutely wonderful sound and is personally my favorite of the bunch.

[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and [name_f]Clio[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], though different from each other are great choices!

[name_f]Cleo[/name_f] spelling is much preferable to me. All the names work well and are fine and I really especially like both [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] and [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] - hard to choose between them but probably [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] in the end.

[name_f]Cleo[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is lovely!

[name_f]Cleo[/name_f] and [name_f]Clio[/name_f] are nice nn’s but they don’t seem substantial enough to me for a first.

[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] feels insubstantial to me, though I love [name_f]Tess[/name_f] and [name_f]Tressa[/name_f].

[name_f]Ada[/name_f] is my favorite. Though short, it packs a punch.

I think your first name choices satisfy what you say you’re looking for, I am indifferent as to a favorite of the three, but prefer the [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] spelling. As far as middle names though, I’ll just share my experience. My Mom gave us all our own middle name plus her surname as our middle names. It wasn’t a big deal, though I wouldn’t say I really liked having two middles. When I got married though and chose to eliminate both my middle names and replace them with my (and my father’s) surname she got a little annoyed about it. That being said, I myself gave my first son ALL of the grandparent’s surnames- 1 first, 2 middles and his last- he likes his special name, but it is quite masculine sounding.

I have to say I love [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]!

Whether you choose [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] or [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], keep whichever name you don’t for the future because [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] and [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] would be an excellent sibset!

[name_f]Cleo[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]! [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] would be my second choice, but [name_f]Ada[/name_f] is lovely, too.

I love all 3 firsts, and I’d like to add I’m a big advocate for the [name_f]Clio[/name_f] spelling as a history/mythology lover. I would probably go for [name_f]Clio[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], because she is one of my favourites, but [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is such a darling combo.

I adore [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]!

I like all three. I might like [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] a little better than [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], which is a lot of consonants to say. I personally like having a first-name middle name. If you have a pretty surname though you could use it.

I like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] the best. I like [name_f]Margret[/name_f] even better than [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-gar-et. So [name_f]Margret[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is my fave.
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f] or even [name_f]Clio[/name_f] still reminds me of oleo margerine.
“The Oleomargarine Act defined the very essence of butter and imposed a two-cent per pound tax on oleomargarine, a butter substitute made from animal fat.”
[name_f]Teresa[/name_f] [name_f]Margret[/name_f] called [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] would be nice.

My DD (age 4) has a [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] in her class, and I think it’s adorable. She’s a lovely, bubbly girl and the name suits her, would’ve never have thought it otherwise! I think [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] will age well, too.

[name_f]Clio[/name_f] to me is a car (I’m in Europe). [name_f]Clio[/name_f] is everywhere… always stuck behind one!

[name_f]Ada[/name_f] is a lovely name, too, but all the [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], etc etc is not as unique as [name_f]Cleo[/name_f]. But of course it’s a nice-sounding name!

My favorite is [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] or [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], slight leaning toward the sound of [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], but it could depend on the last name sound as well.

Editing to add: I forgot you’d asked about [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] as well. That’s a beautiful name, too. It’s one I’d put on my ‘list’ though DH isn’t as crazy about it. [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] sounds beautiful and strong.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Ada[/name_f] and [name_f]Tessa[/name_f]. I’m not personally a huge fan of [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] and even less so of [name_f]Clio[/name_f].

[name_f]Lovely[/name_f] names!! [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] is my fave and [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] next- they would be such sweet sister names! [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is my top pick.

[name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] would also be a sweet name to throw in the mix!
