Closed To Catch Up šŸŒˆ Mollie Plays "Dilemma Fixer!"

I find myself very stuck in my style, so I thought this might be a fun ā€œgameā€ for me to play, as it will allow me to work with other names and vibes!

Similar to the ā€œLet Us Name Your Babyā€ Nameberry articles, I thought it could be enjoyable to try to help with some of your naming dilemmas!

Describe your dilemma below, no matter the circumstance, and I will respond with my naming advice and/or name suggestions that might help you with said quandary! :blueberries:

Iā€™m trying to be as unbiased as possible with this, so I will do my best to forget my tastes and what direction Iā€™d go in this scenario and look at everything very objectively! Go into as much detail as youā€™re comfortable with, and Iā€™ll try to help provide a solution for your predicament, whether that be real or imaginary!

Disclaimer: I am one person who attends school full-time and has other commitments outside of this thread; I canā€™t promise that responses will be delivered quickly. And as with all tests and threads like this on Nameberry, I might respond with a suggestion that isnā€™t going to work for you; this is just for fun! This thread will always be open (unless directly stated otherwise), and I am glad to repeat customers. Feel free to create a fake persona or dilemma as you wish.

Thank you for indulging me! I look forward to hearing about your dilemmas. :white_heart:

Such a fun idea! I reckon Iā€™ll hit you with a real-life dilemma, then  My girlfriend and I have offered our own ideas and compromises for this, but Iā€™m curious about what youā€™d do!

Iā€™m from Greece, sheā€™s from Germany, and weā€™re a bit conflicted about names! Iā€™m naturally attracted to international names (which in this context I define as names used in many European countries!), which excludes a lot of Greek names, especially boy names. Iā€™m totally on-board with any future babies not having Greek first names. But for middle names, weā€™re a little bit torn between a) using an honour name from my girlfriendā€™s side of the family, b) using random Greek names we like, for the sake of a Greek name being included, or c) using something unrelated that we both love! On a), some additional context is that if we did do that then the baby would have 3 German names (first, middle, surname) so I wonder if Iā€™d be robbing them of my side of their heritage by doing that? Especially since the children would be Greek culturally but not biologically. But I do find the German honour names quite beautiful, especially with many first names we like!

If it helps to visualise the situation, Iā€™ll give an example of our top combos with all the options taken into consideration. One of our favourite boy names is Valentin (which is German, among other origins). With an honour name on her side, heā€™d be Valentin Rudolf (German surname), with a random Greek name we like heā€™d be Valentin Orfeas (German surname), or heā€™d be Valentin Ilija (German surname), with Ilija being neither Greek nor German and therefore ā€œneutralā€.

Lastly (to complicate things even more ), we both feel comfortable with using Russian & South Slavic names for various reasons, so thatā€™s a wildcard to consider! And in a way, I almost think that in the scenario of us using, say, a Bulgarian first name, it wouldnā€™t bother me as much if the middle name was German and there were no Greek names, because at least itā€™s not 3 for 3 German? But I wonder if thatā€™s me being silly and the issue of my heritage not being represented in those name still persists, or not? :grimacing: Iā€™ve considered doing 2 middle names, but Iā€™ve never liked combos with 2 middle names so it feels like itā€™d be forcing it and Iā€™m not sold on the idea for now.

So to boil it down, the question is: What do you think we should do in this situation in terms of the middle name dilemma? Does the answer change depending on whether the first name is German or not? And should I just get over my dislike of combos with 2 middle names?

@tallemaja[name_f][/name_f] Hello, [name_f]Maya[/name_f]! So, Iā€™ll do a run-down of what I got here. You are Greek; your girlfriend is [name_m]German[/name_m]. Your children will be biologically your girlfriendā€™s and will take her [name_m]German[/name_m] last name. There is now a debate between using a.) an honor middle for your girlfriendā€™s family, b.) using a Greek name you like for the sake of giving little tallemajaā€™s a Greek name, or c.) using something unrelated that you both love. Iā€™m also going to go ahead and say that two middles are not an option for you two, as all of your combos are one middle; you donā€™t prefer two middles, and Greek people donā€™t generally have any middle names (from what Iā€™ve seen!).

[name_f][/name_f]

I am going to start by saying that I do not think you should undermine and dismiss your feelings of not liking three [name_m]German[/name_m] names (first, middle, and surname) because your heritage is not represented while not minding something like Bulgarian FN, [name_m]German[/name_m] MN, and [name_m]German[/name_m] LN. I think this is a logical way of thinking and feeling because ultimately, having 3/3 names [name_m]German[/name_m] does put off, ā€œIā€™m [name_m]German[/name_m], and these are the names that represent that,ā€ whereas having 2/3 seems more like, ā€œMy names were picked with love and happen to represent my Germanity.ā€ If I met an [name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_m]Rudolf[/name_m] Klein, Iā€™d immediately assume that he was [name_m]German[/name_m] from his first and middle names alone, whereas an [name_m]Ilija[/name_m] [name_m]Rudolph[/name_m] Klein would only get that same assumption from his surname.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]My[/name_f] immediate belief is that option A should not be chosen unless the first name is of Russian, [name_m]South[/name_m] Slavic, or other European origin. There would still very much be room for your girlfriendā€™s family to be represented in the middle, but itā€™d be a compromise that would not leave you feeling like you arenā€™t represented. Your verbiage on option B leads me to wonder if youā€™re that enthusiastic about any Greek name in particular. I donā€™t think you should use a Greek name just out of an obligation you feel. If there is a Greek name youā€™re super strongly pulled towards and a German/international name youā€™re super strongly pulled towards, Iā€™d let the Greekness be a deciding factor, but if said German/international name just feels right over the Greek name, donā€™t just pick the Greek name because of its origin.

[name_f][/name_f]

I think Iā€™d find myself pulled towards option C. It seems as though a lot of the international names you enjoy work well for you, your heritage, the languages you speak, etc. They give you happiness and spark joy. That is such[name_f][/name_f] an important factor, and I think it would make the fact that your Greekness isnā€™t necessarily represented a bit of a smaller deal. It doesnā€™t create the feeling of a ā€œGerman vs. Greekā€ fight. It leans most towards ā€œWe just love these names!ā€ which is something Iā€™m partial to.

[name_f][/name_f]

Three for three [name_m]German[/name_m] names is[name_f][/name_f] a lot, and I think that naming is such a special thingā€”the perfect opportunity for your children to have that non-biological heritage represented in a way that is so strongly tied to their birth and existence. A marker of ā€œHello, Iā€™m Greek,ā€ that shows that while they might not be so biologically, the Greek cultural and familial ties are certainly there.

[name_f][/name_f]

In my mind, Iā€™d say the solution for this dilemma would be going for a [name_m]German[/name_m] first, a Russian/South Slavic middle that means something to you, and the [name_m]German[/name_m] surname. Alternatively, a European first, a [name_m]German[/name_m] honor middle, and the [name_m]German[/name_m] surname.

[name_f][/name_f]

So, as a TLDR: I think you should go with an unrelated shared favorite if the first is going to be a [name_m]German[/name_m] name; my answer does change if the first is not a [name_m]German[/name_m] name (in which case then Iā€™d be partial to using a [name_m]German[/name_m] honor name for your girlfriendā€™s family), and you should not be forced to get over your dislike of two middle combos because there is certainly a perfect combo out there for you and your family!

Obsessed with this idea, Mollie!! So fun!

[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

This is actually a dilemma that Iā€™ve been chatting about with my godmotherā€™s son (and his wife) who are expecting their first child. They are pretty stuck on how to balance a name they like with an honour name.

[name_f][/name_f]

From their lists, Iā€™ve noticed theyā€™re quite into nature names; [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_m]Robin[/name_m], [name_m]Sorrel[/name_m], etc (for either boy or girl.) She is a holistic medicine consultant and botanist (and rocks a curly topknot and overalls!), he is a carpenter and engineer- they just spend a lot of time outside in the forest and have a very relaxed vibe.

[name_f][/name_f]

However, it is really important to them to honour their Dutch/Germanic heritage. So, the question is, what is a name that ties to that origin and also has a nature connection, or natural feel? [name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to suggest single names, combos, whatever.

[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

Thanks and take your time with your response!!

@OctaviaMay Oh my gosh, these names are lovely! So Iā€™m gathering ā€œnature-loving couple wants a name that represents their heritage!ā€ from this. My immediate thought would be to find a Dutch or German nature name/a Dutch or German name that sounds like it would be a nature name in English or sounds like an English nature name! I was getting a lot of boy vibes from their descriptions, so I think my suggestions reflect that. I found that there were more masculine Dutch options and more feminine German options, so that might be something to think of for them!

Some Dutch ideasā€¦
Roen: A masculine Dutch name from Jeroen, but clearly would have a tie through sound to Rowan trees.
Bram: A masculine Dutch name from Abraham, has a nature feeling with a tie to brambles. This name feels like sticks to me - very nature-ish.
Floris: A Dutch variation of Florence, feels undeniably nature-y! I really like this one, but Iā€™m not sure itā€™s their vibe.
Holland: A Dutch unisex name that means ā€œwooded land,ā€ it has a nature meaning, but also feels nature-y based on the fact that it is a place name. I really like this for them!
Madelief: A feminine Dutch name meaning ā€œdaisy,ā€ that sounds extra woodsy with that -leef sound.

Some German ideasā€¦
Romy: A feminine German name that is a diminutive of Rosemary.
Kamille: An established Spanish version of Camila, that also means ā€œchamomileā€ in German.
Rosmarin: A feminine German name that means rosemary.
Everett: A German name that means ā€œbrave as a wild boar,ā€ but shares similar sounds with Everest, making it sound outdoorsy and spirited.
Ivo: A masculine German name that means ā€œyew wood, archer,ā€ I think this matches with their vibe!

Nature names that have ties to Germany and the Netherlandsā€¦
Alder: A tree name, alder trees are very common in the Netherlands.
Rowan / Willow / Hawthorne / Hazel / Oleander / Laurel: All more trees that are popular in the Netherlands.
Daisy: The national flower of the Netherlands!
Oakley: Oak is the national tree of Germany.

Random suggestions that I thought Iā€™d throw inā€¦
Elwood: has a connection to the woods, but still feels like it would fit in with German and Dutch names.
Hugh: A masculine German name that sounds identical to hue. Reminds me personally of paintings of the fall landscape.

My top suggestions for them for a little boy would be Roen, Ivo, and Alder. My top suggestions for them for a little girl would be Holland, Madeleif, or Daisy! Iā€™m not sure this is exactly what you were looking for, so I hope this works, Louise! If not, let me know

Wowā€¦These are great!! I thought of [name_m]Floris[/name_m] for their list too, so I love that youā€™re seconding him! Iā€™m also loving [name_m]Roen[/name_m] (literal perfection!!), [name_m]Bram[/name_m], [name_f]Madelief[/name_f], [name_f]Holland[/name_f], Rosmarin, [name_m]Ivo[/name_m], [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m], [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] (the national flower connection is so sweet!!) Iā€™m for sure pitching these ideas to them, thank you so so much!!!

Iā€™m wondering if youā€™d have the time to resolve one of my biggest dilemmas, at least in regards to names. Thank you!

[name_f][/name_f]
    [name_f][/name_f]
  1. I have loved [name_f]Athena[/name_f] for as long as I can remember, and I know Iā€™ll absolutely use it if I ever have a daughter. I used to struggle with what Iā€™d name her siblings and still do. I did land on [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] or [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] for girls and alternate between the two, depending on my mood. However, there is not a single boy name on my list that actually goes with her. I suppose I could make them work but they do end up looking mismatched or overtly similar. [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] are, at the moment, my top two names for boys but theyā€™re so traditional in front of the more modern [name_f]Athena[/name_f] that the tipping scale never balances! On the other hand, thereā€™s the handsome [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] but the sibset sounds cheesy. I like [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m], but it is a part of [name_m]Roman[/name_m] mythology which would be a juxtaposition with [name_f]Athena[/name_f].
  2. [name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
    [name_f][/name_f]
  1. Secondly, Iā€™m not sure of her own middle name. For the longest time running, itā€™s been [name_f]Athena[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], for the character in Shakespeareā€™s As you Like It[name_f][/name_f] and [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] [name_m]Franklin[/name_m], who discovered the helical structure of DNA. Both are symbolic for me ā€“ I am a massive [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] fan and I also study Biology. It is also the name of one of Uranusā€™s moons (named after the character). Iā€™ve been going back and forth on it. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I donā€™t. I have considered [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], which I absolutely used to love, but it has since gotten popular and I donā€™t feel attached enough to use it. Thereā€™s the mesmerising [name_f]Esmeray[/name_f] but Iā€™m not Turkish. I like [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] because I think [name_f]Athena[/name_f] [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] is the epitome of the divine feminine. Thatā€™s what most of my names are anyway. I find the sound a bit harsh though. In the same category, thereā€™s [name_f]Nyx[/name_f], [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] and [name_f]Odile[/name_f], all three of which have their own demerits. I could go for a nature name like [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] such as [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], or [name_f]Saffron[/name_f]. [name_f]Rumi[/name_f] is another, but [name_f]Athena[/name_f] and [name_f]Rumi[/name_f] are worlds apart in my eyes. [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] is symbolic for me in ways more than one so that is an option as well, but Iā€™m not feeling it as such. I guess, help?
  2. [name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

Sorry for the long question!

[name_f][/name_f]

Anyhow, a purely hypothetical dilemma!

[name_f][/name_f]

What names would you suggest to a couple who are considering honouring people called:

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Thessaly[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Rhea[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Mercy[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- [name_m]Robbie[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

but donā€™t want to use any of the exact names and want to honour as many of those people in one or two names as they can

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] that makes sense [name_f][/name_f]- and thank you again for offering this! [name_f]Hope[/name_f] you feel inspired again soon

I love the answers youā€™ve given for other people so Iā€™m really intrigued what youā€™ll think of my dilemma. Thereā€™s a bit of background so bear with me. My DH is technically a III (the third) but not really, heā€™s Joseph Patrick, his dad was Joseph Martin and his grandfather was Joseph Sidney. He also took his mothers surname so he has a different ā€˜first name last nameā€™ to the previous two Josephs. Itā€™s important to him that (if possible, heā€™s not Henry VIII forcing sons out of me) we have a son named Joseph to carry it on, we currently have the name set out for a second son (he was the second son himself and his dad was actually the forth son).

Now with the background out of the way my real dilemma is what to call young Joseph, because for thirty years my DH has been Joey, his dad who passed away was five years ago was Joe and his grandfather was always just Joseph. Having grown up with the name my DH is adamant that young Joseph couldnā€™t get by just going by Joseph and would have a nickname put on him at school whether he wanted it or not. I donā€™t think thatā€™s how that works, but we do come from different cultures and our kids would be growing up in his culture so Iā€™m going with his idea of what school culture is like over here.

The obvious nicknames are Joe and Joey. Personally I think calling the child the ā€˜adult nicknameā€™ (Joe) while the dad goes by the ā€˜child nicknameā€™ (Joey) is silly. I also hate the idea of my DH and my son having the same nicknames, it feels like it would be confusing situation for all involved. My DH has once or twice talked about moving to the nickname Joe when/if young Joseph is born so that our son could take the nickname Joey, but I think thatā€™s a terrible idea. First of all not only his whole family calls him Joey, everyone at work calls him Joey to the point that one of his previous managers was surprised to see the full name Joseph on a legal document! The other point is that it feels slightly gross to me to change your name when you have a child especially if that child is a second son, he would have in theory had a one son already and perhaps a daughter who wouldnā€™t have changed his identity in this fundamental way.

So what do we call this kid? In my head the obvious answer is to go by a middle name but I can tell DH isnā€™t totally sold on this. Are there other workable Joseph nicknames? Could there be a Demi from Little Women situation where thereā€™s a nickname totally unrelated to his given name? Am I wrong that Joe and Joey are off the table as nicknames? Is there another option entirely that Iā€™m missing?

@AStudyIn_Scarlet[name_f][/name_f] Hello, [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f]! So, you love [name_f]Athena[/name_f] more than any other name, which poses a problem. Youā€™re having a hard time deciding on brother names for [name_f]Athena[/name_f] (and Cleo/Hermione) and a middle name that matches your love for [name_f]Athena[/name_f] while still maintaing a consistent style!

[name_f][/name_f]

Off the bat, I will say that Iā€™d nix [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], agreeing that it sounds a little cheesy. And although [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] is a part of [name_m]Roman[/name_m] mythology, I donā€™t think that should turn you off of him! I associate [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] with the planet [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] before I associate it with mythology. And for what itā€™s worth, I know a family with a N3ptune and an Ath3na (and a brother that has the first name of a very well-known composerā€™s middle). I donā€™t think that [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] works with [name_f]Athena[/name_f], but I donā€™t totally mind [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]?

[name_f][/name_f]

For some reason, [name_m]Osric[/name_m] is really sticking out to me as a suggestion for you. Not sure if that is something youā€™d be interested in, but I really wanted to mention him as my first suggestion! Iā€™d say go for something thatā€™s classic/well-known, but with a lot of spunk, spirit, and power!

[name_f][/name_f]

I actually think the majority of your boys list really works with Athena!! [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] and [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] from your top five stick out to me. From the extended list, I can easily imagine: [name_m]Achilles[/name_m], [name_m]Altair[/name_m], [name_m]Arcturus[/name_m], Area, [name_m]Astrophel[/name_m], [name_m]Beowulf[/name_m], [name_m]Cecil[/name_m], [name_m]Cormac[/name_m], [name_m]Cosimo[/name_m], [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] (feels stronger than [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], which makes it a better match for [name_f]Athena[/name_f], in my opinion!), [name_m]Emrys[/name_m], [name_m]Endymion[/name_m], [name_m]Evren[/name_m], [name_m]Fannar[/name_m], [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], [name_m]Helios[/name_m], [name_m]Hollis[/name_m] (softer, but the name still has a weight to it that matches Athena), [name_m]Horatio[/name_m], [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], [name_m]Hyperion[/name_m], [name_m]Icarus[/name_m], [name_f]Indigo[/name_f], [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m], [name_m]Keir[/name_m], [name_m]Keiran[/name_m], [name_m]Loki[/name_m], [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m], [name_m]Lysander[/name_m], [name_m]Malachi[/name_m], [name_m]Mercury[/name_m], [name_m]Meridian[/name_m], [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m], [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m], [name_m]Pax[/name_m] (think these match really well!), [name_m]Percival[/name_m], [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f], [name_m]Phoenix[/name_m], [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m], [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m], [name_m]Regulus[/name_m], [name_m]Remus[/name_m], [name_m]Romulus[/name_m], [name_m]Saturn[/name_m], [name_m]Sirius[/name_m], [name_m]Solaris[/name_m], [name_m]Stellan[/name_m], [name_m]Sylvan[/name_m], [name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m], [name_m]Theseus[/name_m], [name_m]Victor[/name_m], [name_m]Vulcan[/name_m], [name_f]Willow[/name_f], [name_f]Wren[/name_f], [name_m]Zigmund[/name_m], [name_m]Ziggy[/name_m], and Zephyr!!

[name_f][/name_f]

I donā€™t think you could go wrong with really any name on your list [name_f][/name_f]- particularly if you gave [name_f]Athena[/name_f] a ā€œsofterā€ and more common middle (whether that be [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Esmeray[/name_f], [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], etc) and, say, [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] a more unique middle (like your [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Apollo). Quite honestly, I think [name_f]Athena[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] and [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] work well together!

[name_f][/name_f]

As for Athenaā€™s middle, I totally get what you mean about her being a little hard to match. Some names are just like that, I feel like. When a first name is your absolute favorite, itā€™s difficult to find a middle you love so much, sometimes all you can do is find a combo that you like together, even if the middle isnā€™t a favorite! At least that is how I feel.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Athena[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] is a great combo, and Iā€™m hesitant to say let it go. Itā€™s very meaningful to you clearly, but sometimes things just feel a bit off some days. That is okay and completely valid! [name_f]Athena[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is nice too, but I understand how you feel about the popularity. Iā€™m not Turkish, so I canā€™t say you should or shouldnā€™t use [name_f]Esmeray[/name_f]. I want to say that I love [name_f]Athena[/name_f] [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f]! Iā€™d say itā€™s my absolute favorite for your girl, apart from the OG [name_f]Athena[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] I donā€™t think it sounds harsh, but I can see why you might. It seems like you like to balance a soft first with a ā€œhardā€ middle, and vise versa. [name_f]Athena[/name_f] [name_f]Morrigan[/name_f] doesnā€™t follow that pattern, despite being lovely!

[name_f][/name_f]

Some names that might give you inspiration for middlesā€¦
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Magali[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Esme[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Rosaline[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Lumi[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Remi[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f]

And some names that have a tie to green/emeraldsā€¦
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Beryl[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Bryony[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Ivy[/name_f]

iā€™m changing my name in the fairly near future, and iā€™ve been going by [name_m]Russ[/name_m] as my preferred name for a number of years. [name_f][/name_f] i donā€™t know that i love [name_m]Russ[/name_m] as a standalone, and it was originally a nickname for [name_f]Russet[/name_f], which iā€™ve fallen out of love with over the last couple years or so. [name_f][/name_f] iā€™ve searched far and wide for another longer form that can have the nickname [name_m]Russ[/name_m], and the only ones i really liked were [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] and [name_m]Aurelius[/name_m]ā€” but [name_m]Aurelius[/name_m] felt too pretentious so i narrowed it down to just [name_m]Harrison[/name_m]. [name_f][/name_f] UNFORTUNATELY im super super picky about initials [name_f][/name_f]? i donā€™t know why, it just really bothers me when i donā€™t really love my initials. [name_f][/name_f] so for a variety of reasons iā€™m really stuck on having a J in my initials. [name_f][/name_f] basically, the full chosen name is looking like: [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] Elijahu J____ (Surname) but i canā€™t seem to find a J masculine name that i really really love & can bridge the gap between [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] which has rustic cowboy energy & Elijahu which is an honor name from my Finnish heritage and has more gentle, reading a book on a window seat energy. (eh lee yah hu)

[name_f][/name_f]

contenders include:
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jasper[/name_m] (gives me a bit of YA novel that i donā€™t particularly love)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jesper[/name_m] (super super cool but I donā€™t know if its exactly me)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]John[/name_m] (i honestly love it a lot but my surname also ends in -n so three of four names would end in -n so the flow is not good)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] (genuinely love but it makes the full name terribly long :sob:[name_f][/name_f] [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] Elijahu [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m] Surname)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jude[/name_m] (the repeated u sound throws me off ??)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jesse[/name_m] (i like it a lot but it reads a little feminine to me & feels even more cowboy than [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] ?)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jonas[/name_m] (i just donā€™t know if i love it :sob:)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Joses[/name_m] (itā€™s cool itā€™s fresh itā€™s unexpected i just donā€™t know if its IT)
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]July[/name_f] (i love the flow but [name_f]July[/name_f] is my least favorite month HA)
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Judah[/name_m] (love love love a good -ah ending but the u sound just makes me trip over it when i try to say it)

[name_f][/name_f]

other factors: i might change my surname to [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] instead of my first name [name_f][/name_f]? i havenā€™t completely decided yet, and also i am not dead attached to [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] as a long form of [name_m]Russ[/name_m], itā€™s just the best one iā€™ve come across so far and i like it a lot

[name_f][/name_f]

TLDR: cool masculine 1-2 syllable J names that can bridge the gap between [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] and Elijahu and/or long form of nickname [name_m]Russ[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]?

[name_f][/name_f]

thank you so much !!!

I swear Nameberry reads minds because anytime I think ā€˜oh it would be cool if there was a thread thatā€¦ā€™, Iā€™ll find that thread within a couple days :joy:

[name_f][/name_f]

So Iā€™m planning to be a SMBC in the future ā€“ still a few years away while I get myself set up ā€“ and honour names for middle names are a really big thing in my family that I plan to continue. [name_f]My[/name_f] current favourites for little one are [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] for a girl and [name_m]Jayce[/name_m] ā€˜JJā€™ for a boy. In my kidsā€™ middle names, I want to honour my mum and siblings and up until about a month-and-a-half ago, I had two combos that I was really happy with and really excited to use one day.

[name_f][/name_f]

These were [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] Annelyn [name_f]Rosalee[/name_f] and [name_m]Jayce[/name_m] Jaxlee [name_m]Miller[/name_m].

[name_f][/name_f]

Back to the dilemma, my ability to honour all three people really rested on using [name_m]Lee[/name_m] but as of a month-and-a-half ago, Iā€™ve gained a really negative association with [name_m]Lee[/name_m] that Iā€™m not sure I could bring myself to use the name (which is disappointing).

[name_f][/name_f]

So I was wondering if you could suggest some ideas for a double middle name that honours my mum and siblings

Thank you so much for offering this and thank you in advance :yellow_heart:

ooh this is so fun, Iā€™ll give you a real dilemma courtesy of my sister! She and her boyfriend have polar opposite taste in names. [name_f]My[/name_f] sister likes weighty, dramatic classics; she teaches literature and a lot of her favourites are literary-inspired. She has always known she want to call her son, if she has one, [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m][name_f][/name_f], and for girls her favourites include [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f][name_f][/name_f], [name_f]Imogen[/name_f][name_f][/name_f], [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f][name_f][/name_f]. Her boyfriend on the other hand dislikes these names (although heā€™s prepared to go with [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] because itā€™s very important to her), and prefers shorter, friendlier, more casual names. His favourite for a girl is [name_m]Ashley[/name_m][name_f][/name_f] and he loves [name_m]Bradley[/name_m][name_f][/name_f] ā€˜[name_m]Brad[/name_m]ā€™ for a boy. This is partly because of his personality [name_f][/name_f]- heā€™s a very laid back extroverted guy and I think thatā€™s reflected in the names he likes [name_f][/name_f]- but itā€™s also that, as an American living in the UK, he feels disconnected from his heritage and likes the idea of a name that feels noticeably ā€˜all Americanā€™. But these names do not work with my sisterā€™s more romantic tastes!
[name_f][/name_f]They have managed to agree on two names they both like: [name_m]Daniel[/name_m][name_f][/name_f] for a boy, which is romantic enough for my sister and appeals to her boyfriend because of the Bible story and nickname [name_m]Danny[/name_m], and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] for a girl. [name_f]My[/name_f] sister likes this one because itā€™s pretty and feminine, and her boyfriend likes it because it makes him think of [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_m]Adams[/name_m]. But theyā€™d like a few more options!
[name_f][/name_f]Some other considerations [name_f][/name_f]-
[name_f][/name_f]ā€“Neither of them are particularly bothered by popularity.
[name_f][/name_f]ā€“Bonnie is a likely candidate for the middle spot, so girls names that work with [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] would be ideal.
[name_f][/name_f]ā€“Both of them enjoy nicknames, so names with nickname options would also be amazing.
[name_f][/name_f]Would you be able to suggest some names for them that bridge the gap between their two styles? Thanks in advance! :rainbow:

@Greyblue[name_f][/name_f] Hello, Grace!! So, weā€™re looking to honor [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f], [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_f]Rhea[/name_f], [name_f]Mercy[/name_f], and [name_m]Robbie[/name_m]! This was a little difficult, so if youā€™re not really happy with any of them, please tell me and Iā€™ll try to find some more that might work!

[name_f][/name_f]

Some single name ideasā€¦
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Ira[/name_m]:[name_f][/name_f] Honors [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Rhea[/name_f] through sound.
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]:[name_f][/name_f] Combines [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] and [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f] through sound.

[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Arissa[/name_f]:[name_f][/name_f] Honors [name_f]Rhea[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f] through sound, and [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f] with the double s.
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Remus[/name_m]:[name_f][/name_f] Honors [name_f]Rhea[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f] through sound, and [name_m]Robbie[/name_m] through the R starting letter.
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Soraya[/name_f]:[name_f][/name_f] Combines [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_f]Rhea[/name_f] through sound.
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Atlas[/name_m]:[name_f][/name_f] Honors [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f] through sound.
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Rafferty[/name_m]:[name_f][/name_f] Honors [name_m]Robbie[/name_m] and [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f] through sound.
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Thea[/name_f]:[name_f][/name_f] Combines [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f] and [name_f]Rhea[/name_f], and honors [name_f]Iris[/name_f] through the ā€œgoddessā€ meaning.
[name_f][/name_f]Kosmos:[name_f][/name_f] [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] is derived from Attikos, and weā€™re also able to honor [name_f]Iris[/name_f] through cosmos being a purple-y flower like irises!
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Valor[/name_m]:[name_f][/name_f] Connects to [name_f]Mercy[/name_f] by being a virtue name, has a tie to [name_f]Iris[/name_f] as the petals of iris flowers are said to represent faith, wisdom, and valor.
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Rosalia[/name_f]:[name_f][/name_f] Shares the [name_f]Ro[/name_f]- sound with [name_m]Robbie[/name_m] and connects to [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f], which was also known as [name_f]Aeolia[/name_f].
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Selah[/name_f]:[name_f][/name_f] Has a tie to both [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f] and [name_f]Rhea[/name_f] in sound, could also be a ā€œshared first initialā€ honor for [name_m]Simon[/name_m].
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Mavis[/name_f]:[name_f][/name_f] Shares the starting initial with [name_f]Mercy[/name_f] and similar sounds to [name_f]Iris[/name_f]!
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]:[name_f][/name_f] Shares similarity with [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f] (T first letter and a double letter in the middle), shares a close water-related meaning with [name_f]Rhea[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Rhea[/name_f] which means ā€œa flowing stream,ā€ and [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] which means ā€œleaping water,ā€ [name_f][/name_f]- and also is a flower like [name_f]Iris[/name_f]!
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Rory[/name_m]:[name_f][/name_f] Has similar sounds to [name_m]Robbie[/name_m] and [name_f]Mercy[/name_f], while still being distinct.
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Mona[/name_f]:[name_f][/name_f] Takes the ending sound from [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and transitions into the style of [name_f]Rhea[/name_f]. Could also be considered a stretchy honor for [name_f]Mercy[/name_f] with the M starting letter!
[name_f][/name_f]Kitaro:[name_f][/name_f] Taking the common ā€œberry-ishā€ nickname [name_m]Kit[/name_m] from [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], and the [name_f]Ro[/name_f] sound of [name_m]Robbie[/name_m], we can combine that and get Kitaro, a name that means ā€œman of love and joyā€ (at least according to google, haha!).
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Ruth[/name_f]:[name_f][/name_f] A name that means ā€œcompassionate friend,ā€ to honor [name_f]Mercy[/name_f], and shares the shortness of [name_f]Rhea[/name_f], as well as the same starting letter.

[name_f][/name_f]

Some extra ideas that really only honor oneā€¦

Back again! [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this isnā€™t too overwhelming with your other requests- take your time!!

[name_f][/name_f]

Iā€™m feeling very uninspired by my girls names at the moment, and just want to get a bit of that spark back. Iā€™ve played around with single names and sibsets, but no combos are popping to mind.

[name_f][/name_f]

Below Iā€™ve listed some names Iā€™ve been thinking about lately! I feel like the vibe is vintage and playful, quirky, cool-girl names for kids who have dance parties in the living room and make weekend trips to the library. Names that are both clunky and artsy contemporary.
[name_f][/name_f]I would love if you just played around with them and made some combos! You can match them as sets, or suggest new names, anything you like! I just want someone to look over my names with a fresh perspective.

[name_f][/name_f]

One or two middles is fine!
