Clyde

My husband would really like to use the name [name_m]Clyde[/name_m] to honor his father. The name is growing on me, but I still think it sounds too old. Can anybody think of any more modern-sounding nicknames?

The first nn that came to my mind was [name_m]Cy[/name_m]. I love honoring names! That’s a great legacy to give your child.

I don’t think [name_m]Clyde[/name_m] sounds old, I actually find “older names” to be refreshing since they’re less common to hear.

[name_f]IMO[/name_f] i don’t think [name_m]Clyde[/name_m] needs a nn since it’s already so short… I guess you could use [name_m]Chuck[/name_m], [name_u]Kai[/name_u] or [name_m]Clay[/name_m]?

I really like [name_m]Clyde[/name_m]. NNs [name_m]Cy[/name_m] (pronounced [name_u]Kye[/name_u]), Col, [name_u]Cal[/name_u], [name_m]Kip[/name_m], [name_u]Kit[/name_u].

I adore [name_m]Clyde[/name_m]! I think it would sound so fresh to be used these days. I prefer it as is, but other than the nicknames listed, all I can think of is “Did.” I know someone who used [name_m]Clyde[/name_m] as a middle name and they call the boy Did almost all the time. A bit of a stretch, but I think it works.

I taught a 13 year old named [name_m]Clyde[/name_m] this past school year. It really made me love the name! Of course, it helped that he was extremely smart and polite. He did not have a nickname.

[name_m]Clyde[/name_m] doesn’t have a nickname.

My cousin named her little boy [name_m]Clyde[/name_m], who is now 4. I distinctly remember thinking ‘Oh, what a delightful name!’ when she first announced his arrival and I marvelled at how friendly and familiar the name is, yet it’s not one you hear everyday. Those are my kind of names! The name [name_m]Clyde[/name_m] suits my second cousin so perfectly - he’s very charming, yet equally cheeky and absolutely gorgeous. He doesn’t really have a nickname but sometimes will get called Clydey.

I really love this name and hope you can use it! It’s so wonderful that it will have significance for your family. Congratulations

Cly, [name_u]Kai[/name_u]/[name_m]Cy[/name_m], [name_f]Ide[/name_f], [name_m]Clay[/name_m].

I love [name_m]Clyde[/name_m]! It’s uncommon, but familiar. I like honor names - which it is for your family, and nature names, and those friendly, short “cowboy” kind of names, and [name_m]Clyde[/name_m] seems like both to me. It’s so short that I don’t think it needs - or could stand - to be nicknamed. If what you’re after is a little pet name that you get to choose, since bub’s dad chose [name_m]Clyde[/name_m], I recommend using [name_m]Clyde[/name_m] as his given name, calling him that most of the time, and coming up with something either based on his appearance, temperament, or personality, or choosing a middle name with better nickname potential and using that. [name_m]Clyde[/name_m] is too good to pass up!

I find it really clunky but wouldn’t hesitate to use it in the middle spot. As a first name, I like the suggestion of [name_m]Cy[/name_m].

[name_m]Clyde[/name_m] rocks! [name_f]Clydie[/name_f] Clydesie [name_u]Claude[/name_u] [name_m]Claud[/name_m] [name_m]Claudio[/name_m]

I love [name_m]Clyde[/name_m]! I think the association with [name_m]Clyde[/name_m] Barrow makes the name feel powerful and spunky, not old.

It’s a name that ages well. I can imagine [name_m]Clyde[/name_m] as a little high energy boy on the monkey bars, or a CEO of a company.

[name_m]Clyde[/name_m] is great! Not that it should matter because names are such personal choices as is, but i feel like a name you’re not always crazy about, or think other people may question, is always justified when it’s personally meaningful. That said, if you really don’t like it, don’t do it, bc you will all have to live with it. But if you’re on the fence, I bet you’ll grow to love it. I started to seriously consider the name [name_m]Guy[/name_m] for my son, after his great grandfather–a name we didn’t end up going with, but that I always think about when I look at my son. Also a name I would have never otherwise considered. It holds so much meaning, and I do wish that we had incorporated it in some way. I also think there’s something extraordinary about a kid growing up knowing he/she was named after someone special , especially when it’s not a name that you hear often. Good luck! Please post what you go with!

My SO is set on the name [name_u]Carlisle[/name_u] which at first I thought was odd and too old, and I really didn’t like the nn [name_m]Carl[/name_m], but now I’m completely used to it and actually really like it, so you can definitely grow on it to the point where you’re happy to use it.
[name_m]Clyde[/name_m] could offer a fair few nicknames which might make it easier to grow on. And you could always incorporate the middle name into it, eg. having a nn start with J or C so that you could have CJ or CC
