Cold feet on names. Should we be gutsier?

DH and I have, for the most part, settled on calling our twin girls [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] [name_u]Winter[/name_u] and [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] ([name_m]Pip[/name_m]/[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] and [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] for short), but with our induction date looming less than 2 weeks away, I’m getting cold feet. We originally wanted something classic and interesting–out of the top 100–that wouldn’t date quickly. I’m just not sure we’ve accomplished that with the names we’ve got. Are our choices too trendy?

Should we be looking for something different and be a little gutsier with our choices? Any suggestions (even out-of-the-box ones) are really welcome. Names like [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], [name_u]Seren[/name_u], [name_f]Zara[/name_f] and [name_f]Persis[/name_f] have been on our list at some point or another, so I’m open to ideas! Thinking [name_f]Zara[/name_f] and [name_f]Persis[/name_f] could make an interesting combo, but maybe that’s one limb too far?

Opening the floor to suggestions, so feel free hit me with your best shot!

I think you’ve chosen two absolutely beautiful names, they sound like fairytale princesses. I don’t have any suggestions right now, but I’ll be back when I’ve put baba in bed.

I think [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] and [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] are very classic and beautiful choices, I also think that they are not too trendy.
I also like [name_f]Zara[/name_f] because it is still a classic name but with a more modern spelling. I’m not so sure about [name_f]Persis[/name_f] and probably would go with [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] instead because again it still sounds very classic but is also unusual.

Oh, really? I guess I’ve always thought of [name_f]Persis[/name_f] as being quite classic (in the very old, Greek sense). I guess I thought they might go well as they both sound strong and fresh to me, whereas [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] feels more… romantic.

I really love your combos of [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] [name_u]Winter[/name_u] (Pipa) and [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] ([name_f]Vivi[/name_f]). (I personally prefer [name_f]Phillipa[/name_f] to [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] but really that’s splitting hairs).
I love that there is a kind of symmetry to the names, esp. with the current spelling of [name_f]Philippa[/name_f], that is immediately obvious and that still allows each name to shine as an independent little star.

I don’t think that they the combo’s sound trendy and esp once you drop the mn for every day use they come across as very classic, distinguished and elegant. I actually think that [name_f]Zara[/name_f] is trendier. (Though basically anything with a prominent Z, X, Y or combo there-of strikes me as a potential “unique”-star at the moment). I do remember you really loving [name_f]Zara[/name_f] as an alternative to [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] and would probably suggest coming up with a complete second set of name that you think are more daring. That way you have them in your back-pocket and once you meet your girls you can figure out which set suits them better. It will probably help ease your mind over the next two weeks, and it gives you (and us) something fun to do while you wait for your water to break.

Did you want to keep the same mn? Or were you going to switch them up as well?
[name_f]Zara[/name_f] [name_u]Winter[/name_u]
[name_f]Zara[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]

[name_f]Isis[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] (check out how different this is from [name_f]Zara[/name_f] but has a very similar letter pattern. Pretty cool huh?)
[name_f]Isis[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u]
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]

Metis [name_u]Gray[/name_u] (Greek [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] of [name_f]Wisdom[/name_f] and Mother of [name_f]Athena[/name_f] - her name is so rarely used it’s never even really brought up on NB.)
Metis [name_f]Viola[/name_f]

My favorites of these would be [name_f]Zara[/name_f] and Metis. ([name_f]Zara[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] & Metis [name_f]Viola[/name_f])
I like them together because they are both short and pithy but with very different sounds.

Thanks, and looking forward to your suggestions–always love your name ideas!

I love [name_f]Zara[/name_f] (we have friends who have a baby named this altho spelt [name_f]Zahra[/name_f]). I also like [name_u]Seren[/name_u]

i dont think your choices would be classed as Trendy. More classical, whimsical, formal. I think they are nice- uncommon but not weirdly unheard of names- and you have more adventure in the middle :)… so i think you hit the mark on what you set out to find- if thats still what you want!

Other names i think are similar style would be [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Annalise[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Constance[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_f]Diana[/name_f], [name_f]Helena[/name_f], [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] - i could really keep on going

If you do end up changing your mind I think [name_f]Zara[/name_f] goes with sister names like [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], most other 2 syllable names…

I also like [name_u]Seren[/name_u] with Gwynth, [name_f]Ione[/name_f] and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]

I don’t think [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] and [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] are trendy at all. I see them as classics that have never had a massive peak at any time and so aren’t dated to any time period - [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] are classics that are currently peaking but [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] and [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] have never been massively high in ranking. The middle names are maybe a little more trendy, both being word names, but they work beautifully as combos. [name_m]Pip[/name_m]/[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] and [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] are cute, spunky nicknames and I think you’ve definitely hit the mark you were aiming for with these. I really feel you don’t need to worry, you’ve named them perfectly based on what you wanted to achieve with your names.

Thanks for the ideas. Middles are up for discussion, so I’d just be looking for a more daring pair that really worked well together. As you say, good to have something to do while the wait for labour is on!

For the suggested alternative pair, what about something like, say, [name_f]Zara[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f] and [name_f]Persis[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]?

I think you have chosen beautiful names that work well together and are not that common.

[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] and [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] are gorgeous and nicely balanced.

[name_f]Zara[/name_f] and [name_f]Persis[/name_f] would make an interesting combo but they don’t sound nearly as beautiful as the names you have chosen.

Judging from comments, it’s sounding like we should stick with what we’ve got?

I think the names you’ve chosen are beautiful, and certainly not overly popular or trendy, so I’d leave them as they are.

The names you have chosen are simply beautiful. I would classify them as timeless classics, not trendy. I also love your nicknames [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] and [name_f]Vivi[/name_f]! Best of luck! :footprints::footprints:

Well, they’re definitely not trendy. I’ve never liked [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] for some reason… I guess it seems like a really obvious masculinization, like naming your kid Jamesa or something. Maybe this is just cause most girls’ names end with ‘a’ these days. But I adore [name_f]Zara[/name_f] and [name_f]Persis[/name_f], or [name_f]Zara[/name_f] and [name_f]Isis[/name_f] like someone else suggested. Or even [name_f]Zara[/name_f] and [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f].

[name_f]Zara[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f] & [name_f]Persis[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] are beautiful together! I really like both, such good pairings. [name_f]Constance[/name_f] is a huge favourite of mine.

[name_f]Clio[/name_f] ([name_f]Zara[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f] & [name_f]Clio[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f])
[name_u]Dione[/name_u]
[name_f]Gaia[/name_f]
[name_f]Luned[/name_f] ([name_f]Luned[/name_f] & [name_u]Seren[/name_u])

[name_f]Nemea[/name_f]
[name_f]Olwen[/name_f]

I love your choices! I agree with paw that they are perfectly balanced.

[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] is not at all trendy, imo. [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] seems to be getting more popular (there is a [name_f]Zara[/name_f] and a [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] at my son’s day care)… but I wouldn’t call it trendy.

I would stick with what you’ve got!

Ooh, I’m liking [name_f]Olwen[/name_f]. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t know if DH will bite, though.

I love [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] ([name_f]Pippa[/name_f]) and [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] ([name_f]Vivi[/name_f]) together for twins…what a perfect pair! The middle names may be a little trendy though. If you like [name_f]Olwen[/name_f], [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] [name_f]Olwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] [name_f]Persis[/name_f] would be beautiful. I like the combination of classic first names with gutsier middle names.

Good luck!

I love the two names you have chosen, and I have since very early on in your considerations. I think they sound great together and work to mirror each other subtly but not matchy. And neither one seems trendy to me. But if you feel like you need a second list of two edgier combos then by all means go for it! I have no suggestions, just wanted to rally some more support for [name_f]Viv[/name_f] and [name_m]Pip[/name_m]. =]

Well, [name_u]Gray[/name_u] is a family name we’re more keen on keeping, but we could drop [name_u]Winter[/name_u] and switch it up to [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f]… or maybe even [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f]? Might be more classic that way…

[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f] and [name_f]Persis[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]? Flic and [name_u]Percy[/name_u]?
