Collecting Stripper Names

 Yes! [name_f]Amber[/name_f]!
also 1000 Naomis! (I wanted to be [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] but itā€™s too popular in my region)

I recently met a traveling girl named [name_u]Ember[/name_u] which I thought was an awesome twist on the classic. [name_m]Fire[/name_m] remnants are mos def hot.

[QUOTE=iamamiam;2040218]Aside from the debate about strippersā€™ motives, virtues, and socio-economic status going on here, this could be a decent name game.

Well. The culture in which the names exist is pretty important to knowing how the names function. Also, stigma is weak sauce and I will fight it.

Iā€™m going to answer this question as if [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] [name_m]Larson[/name_m] was asking for suggestions for stripper / drag queen names for his new musical. (Funny, I donā€™t like the names [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] or [name_u]Angel[/name_u] much at all, although I love most everything else about Rent.) Iā€™m not saying that any of these are trashy or would be bad on a child; rather, I just think they would sound cool as stage names.

Iā€™m answering as if he wants his characters to have names that could work in a strip club. And ignoring the drag queen component of the question bc itā€™s not the same set of names.

Most of what you suggested would totally work. Though itā€™s not the only kind of name that would work. You are heavy on the money themed word names. Clubs also have girls using girl next door names, and quirky names, and punny names, and elaborate goth names, and exotic place namesā€¦

Teak- I feel like this would be unclear over the speakers and @ the noisey bar, dudes would be like wha? all the time. Itā€™s too short, maybe? Also, teak is not expensive enough.

[name_f]Cherry[/name_f] (I like the expensive wood aspect but perhaps the double entendre is just too muchā€¦)" Double entendre is never too much! The wood is not expensive enough, tho. I think it def works as a fruit/ innocence reference. I picture this dancer having, like, a rockabilly persona.

re masculine sounding names: Lots of dancers use boy nickname names. [name_u]Sammi[/name_u] [name_u]Toby[/name_u] and [name_m]Coby[/name_m] are the only oneā€™s on the tip of my tongue right nowā€¦

Um. Note that it was interesting enough for you to reply.

I forgot about [name_f]Amber[/name_f]. In fact my very good friend used that one and I always thought it was gorgeous. I wouldnā€™t use it for my daughter because I feel itā€™s dated now, but still a lovely meaning and sounding name. And super strippery, right up there with [name_f]Crystal[/name_f].

Well, I think stage names are interesting specifically for name nerds, bc itā€™s not that there are no rules for picking the names, itā€™s that the rules are different than people think they are. A stripper wouldnā€™t pick a name that sounds classic as in uptight or boring, but she might pick a name that sounds classic as in elegant. That distinction is interesting to me.

Another reason to talk about these names is that the term ā€œstripper nameā€ is used inaccurately in these forums. Those of us who know what strippers are really naming themselves can tell you some of their stage names are pretty awesome even outside the context of the club. You name yourself [name_u]Madison[/name_u] because you are not looking to sound exotic. You maybe are trying to sound spunky or maybe remind people of [name_u]Madison[/name_u] Avenue. Exactly on the mark.

Also, you probably have met a stripper. We run all the errands everybody else runs, and have all the hobbies everybody else has. We have families. Sometimes we have day jobs. We just donā€™t tell everybody what we do for work.

I think itā€™s funny that ā€œnamecrazy59ā€ has [name_u]Eden[/name_u] on her list but in her own personal favorites ā€˜Pryscillaā€™ is listed. You can tell she thinks her names are supper (so upper - was a typo but I am keeping!) classā€¦ FYI: just because a name ends is -A doesnā€™t mean you are safe from being a stripper or worse, an a-hole. I have known a few strippers: [name_u]Hilary[/name_u], [name_f]Amy[/name_f] and [name_f]Rebekah[/name_f] so canā€™t tell all whatā€™s in a name with any of those options.

I really like it, too. Itā€™s elegant but unfussy. I sort of love itā€™s datedness. That was an awesome era!

I like [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] as well. I think of it first as a classic latina name, second as the car.

I wanted to use [name_m]Lemon[/name_m] because I thought it sounded fresh and spunky, but I was worried about the implication of sourness (I am kind of a bitch, and wasnā€™t looking to emphasize that fact w my nameā€¦) In the end I wussed out and went for a real sounding name. But I still think it would be a cool stage name.

I worked with a dancer who went by [name_f]Avalon[/name_f] on stage, [name_f]Ava[/name_f] when she was tending bar

I think [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] would be a cool stage name. [name_f]Gin[/name_f] plus nature- win!

I looove [name_f]Zora[/name_f]. Mrs [name_u]Neale[/name_u] Hurston is cool if in case you want to talk about books. The spanish cognate is an appropriate implication.

[name_f]Apple[/name_f] is an awesome stripper name. Itā€™s short, easy to say, easy to remember, and the connection to the Garden of [name_u]Eden[/name_u] is subtely sexy, implying temptation, womenā€™s sexual power, worldly knowledge and rebelliousness. Itā€™s an easy conversation starter. Itā€™s story is not so defined, tho, that you couldnā€™t also be innocent or tomboyish or whatever else seemed like it might work that night. ([name_m]Farmer[/name_m]'s daughter! Jokes about pie!) It has a cool snappy sound that I like. Customers would remember it.

I actually like these names. And really, these names can be reclaimed with the right personality. I can picture a really quirky hipster girl with [name_m]Buddy[/name_m] [name_f]Holly[/name_f] glasses having the name [name_f]Bambi[/name_f]. [name_f]Bambi[/name_f] could also be a nickname for [name_f]Alabama[/name_f].

[name_f]Tempest[/name_f] and [name_f]EmmaLou[/name_f] are apparently stripper or trashy names, but I really donā€™t see how theyā€™re trashy at all. [name_f]Tempest[/name_f] is gorgeous and could belong to a strong heroine in a book. [name_f]EmmaLou[/name_f] is a darling name that is down to earth but unique and charming.

Well, stripper name and trashy arenā€™t exact synonyms. Some stage names are campy on purpose, but not all. [name_f]Every[/name_f] dancer creates her own persona- there are lots of options.

[name_f]Tempest[/name_f] is a great name off the stage. It also works as a stripper name for the same reason it works as a heroine name: storms are dramatic and sexy, shakespear is classy, itā€™s a rare name but a real word and therefore memorable.

[name_f]EmmaLou[/name_f]: super cute legit baby name. Also awesome stripper name. I picture this dancer having a country persona. Like, cowboy boots and denim outfits and [name_m]Waylon[/name_m] [name_m]Jennings[/name_m].

I like [name_f]Roxana[/name_f]/[name_f]Roxanne[/name_f] very much [name_m]IRL[/name_m] but Iā€™ve ALWAYS heard from soooo many people in multiple forums that [name_f]Roxanne[/name_f] and NN [name_f]Roxy[/name_f]/[name_f]Roxie[/name_f] are incredibly stripper-ish.

ā€œYou CANā€™T name your daughter [name_f]Roxy[/name_f]ā€
I thought it was a bit saloon-girl naughty, like [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], but not unusable. People were horrified, though. ā€œ[name_f]ROXY[/name_f]?!ā€

Iā€™m not saying Iā€™d use [name_f]Roxie[/name_f]/[name_f]Roxy[/name_f] as a full name, but Iā€™d thought it was a perfectly reasonable NN for [name_f]Roxana[/name_f] or even [name_f]Raquela[/name_f]?

I blame the Police song for [name_f]Roxanne[/name_f] and Chicago the musical for [name_f]Roxie[/name_f]. I think.

I was just thinking about that one this morning. I bet it will get used a lot.

a stripper has a real name and a stage name. the stage name is stereotypical and what we think of when we think of strippers.

just because they are named a stereotypical name doesnt mean theyā€™ll be that occupation of course but it does come to mind pretty quick depending on how ā€˜badā€™ the name is.

and just because some of these names are common, thats why i think they are on the list - most people when thinking of anything not just names, usually think of the most common name or the most popular name and its an easy pick for a stage name.

To add to whatā€™s been said, I know that my younger sister ([name_f]Mikayla[/name_f])'s name is commonly used for strippers, but, I also know that, whenever someone mentions that too her, she really hates the association thanks to stereotypes. In school, I knew a girl named [name_f]Bobbi[/name_f] Champagne, (thatā€™s her given first and last name). That being said, I do think that [name_f]Bobbi[/name_f] is a name that comes to mind when I think of a stripper, possibly because of the [name_f]Bobbi[/name_f] I knowā€™s reputation for acting as if sheā€™s one when sheā€™s at a party. Again, another few I think of are Toddlers + [name_f]Tiara[/name_f]'s names, all trendy, most are sexualized sounding names for girls. Mckynli, Sparkal, [name_f]Diamond[/name_f], [name_u]Lyric[/name_u](at a push), Alycesaundra (not sure how they actually spell it), [name_f]Aynslie[/name_f]/[name_f]Ansleigh[/name_f], etc.

I also tend to picture names ending in lie/leigh, as well as names from the 1980ā€™s + 1990ā€™s. ([name_f]Kimmie[/name_f], [name_u]Courtney[/name_u], [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f], [name_u]Kelsey[/name_u])

I donā€™t know if I find the thread offensive, I think to some it might be, due to stereotypes of strippers (my sister being a prime example), however, I donā€™t think in general it is that offensive. Iā€™m guessing there are at least a few strippers named [name_f]Alana[/name_f]/[name_f]Alannah[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_m]Christian[/name_m], etc

Having a ā€˜stripper nameā€™ (I donā€™t like this term, most do find it negative, but it shouldnā€™t be), does not mean youā€™re any smarter than someone else. I know a [name_f]Kayla[/name_f], a [name_f]Bobbi[/name_f], a [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] and a [name_f]Kylie[/name_f], and all did far better in school than me. I believe 2 are going on to become doctors, one to be an environmentalist, and one to be a sports therapist. It also doesnā€™t mean that a [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] or an [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] are better named than a [name_f]McKenna[/name_f] or a [name_f]Kylie[/name_f].

[name_f]Sienna[/name_f]ā€¦

If I were to pick a stage name for myself it would probably be [name_f]Cherish[/name_f] or [name_f]Heather[/name_f] [name_u]Angel[/name_u]. [name_f]One[/name_f] is a [name_f]Madonna[/name_f] song & one is a Sonic Youth song. They have the right super-sweet sound & remind me of music that Iā€™ve loved forever so they make me happy. Instead of listing names that you all think sound ā€œstripperishā€ maybe it would be more fun if we picked the stage name that we would choose

There are just too many teenagers on this site for me to encourage that.

Thatā€™s a great idea. Itā€™s mean to mock peopleā€™s names for any reason. We are on this site to celebrate names. Also, we might consider the larger social forces at play before shaming women or their names as trashy. That shit is straight up misogyny and an abuse of class privilege.

Iā€™d love to hear the persona people would inhabit w their chosen name, too. For instance, would you be a punk rock godess? I like all of your proposed names! [name_f]Music[/name_f] references are perfect. [name_f]Cherish[/name_f] I havenā€™t heard before but it is exactly perfect.

I like when dancers have a full fake name, especially if itā€™s a little punny.
I know of a dancer named [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] Cox. She has a really cool old hollywood look.
[name_m]Berlin[/name_m] [name_m]Wall[/name_m]- I just like this. Itā€™s unexpected and funny. But surprisingly feminine.
[name_f]Valentina[/name_f]- her outfits are mostly lace and she does the glamorous angle well, red lipstick and simple shoes.

Last night I had an interesting conversation with my fiance about this topic. I decided to ask him, out of curiousity, what names he defines as ā€œstripperā€ names.

And the first thing he said was [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]. I adore the name [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], which is besides the point. The point was he said even though the name is associated as being stripperish, it doesnt make it a bad name. And, I realize thats really all verminator has been trying to say. It just really gets under my skin when names are stereotyped, but I do agree that just as some people took offense to seeing their name on the list, women who actually do this for a living take offense to us taking offense.

And so, on that note, I owe everyone an apology too. I have nothing against strippers, never have, and Im sorry if it may have come off that way. I hope I didnt horribly offend anyone, although this thread has seemed to cause a lot of controversy both ways.

So lastly, i saw someone suggested we pick our own stripper names as a fun game, and I have to say, if I were a stripper I would undoubtebly be ā€œ[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]ā€.

And there you have it. Im sorry if anyone took offense to me using [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f], im not labeling it ā€œstripperishā€ that would be kind of hypocritical and besides I adore the name. It just sounds exotic and maybe a little sexy to me, which, according to lemonthistle makes the perfect stage name.

I was never offended to see my name on here. I know itā€™s sort of stripperish. Especially my whole name and my sisters whole name. My mom didnā€™t think things through >.< I was going to be an Alexander Nathaniel, what happened mom!?

Anyway, this has actually been a really interesting thing to read. Iā€™ve never met a stripper, but we are thinking of going to a trip club for my guy friends birthday next week so maybe Iā€™ll post the names I see when Iā€™m there :stuck_out_tongue:

If I were a stripper (and let me tell you with the cost of college the thought has crossed my mindā€¦before I remember Iā€™m not skinny or good looking enough, besides the fact that Iā€™m in transition to and am horribly uncomfortable with my female body) Iā€™d be Andromeda or Lunshea (loon-shay). Ones all starry and exotic and the other means moon fairy. They are wonderful names both on my long list, but if I were reinventing myself as a female stripper and needed a stage name, there it is.

Now since Iā€™m transitioning, like I said up there, Iā€™ll add my stripper stage name if I was a male stripper. Iā€™d be one of these ā€“ Zephyr, Blaise, Greyson (you know, 50 shades and Grey and stuff :stuck_out_tongue: ) , Phoenix, or maybe Dante (which is actually in a combo Iā€™m actually using)

It should be noted that I have every one of those names on my long list. Dante is in a combo Iā€™m planning on actually using, Lunshea was used as the middle name of the main female character in the novel Iā€™m in the process of publishing, a version of Zephyr is in a girl combo of mine so I obviously donā€™t find these names ā€˜taintedā€™ or anything since I just named my stripper self these things :stuck_out_tongue:

Wow, this thread sure took a left turn.

Iā€™ve been told many of my favorites make people think of strippers. I donā€™t know any strippers personally, but apparently nature names and word names are stripperish. Iā€™ve heard that [name_m]Fox[/name_m], [name_u]Blaise[/name_u], and [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] are fine on a boy but on a girl they become provocative. I can understand [name_m]Fox[/name_m], but [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] and [name_u]Blaise[/name_u]? Someone commented that [name_f]Lotus[/name_f] was too sexual to use as a name and I was floored. [name_f]Lotus[/name_f] is sexual!? [name_m]How[/name_m] is it different from [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Violet[/name_f]?
