Collecting treasures: Names that mean "morning"

I am not keen on giving a future child any of my names, because I would like to use something new for them. However, I do want to give names that share a strong link to my name; so, I am collecting names that mean the same thing as each of my names.

One of my names means “morning”. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know any names, for either gender, that mean “morning” or something similar? Nothing is too unusual or outrageous for consideration. I am especially interested in English, Italian, Irish, Scottish, Greek, [name_m]German[/name_m], Japanese and Latin names.

The names I have so far are [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] (I’m weeping over the increasing popularity of this one, because she is my current frontrunner for a daughter); [name_m]Sirius[/name_m] (morning star); [name_f]Lux[/name_f] (bit of a stretch here, probably not close enough in meaning.)

[name_f]Dawn[/name_f] isn’t usable for various reasons.

I would love your suggestions!

Update on page 3; I’m curious about your thoughts on the name Morgen…

I love the name [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] (meaning new day) from [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] Shrugged.

[name_f]Dagne[/name_f] is great!

The association with the book is so strong though I’m not sure I could use it – [name_m]Rand[/name_m] is such a great feminist figure but some of her views are… the kind of values I’d hope my child would reject… so I’ll have to think about that one. Great name, I agree, thanks for reminding me about it. Interesting!

Any other thoughts?

@lu
I like the Japanese pronounciation; lovely for a middle.

@tarynkay
[name_f]Zora[/name_f]; brilliant!
I want to love [name_f]Danica[/name_f]; I think I could, I just have to disassociate it from [name_f]Danielle[/name_f] - a bit of a common name when I was growing up.
[name_f]Ayelet[/name_f] is beautiful.
[name_f]Alba[/name_f] - I had no idea it meant dawn; for some reason I thought it just meant light, so this is a really interesting one.
[name_f]Theia[/name_f]; whoa, this is great. A bit grandiose, but wonderful. NB says she is the titan of sight. That’s pretty awesome.
[name_f]Roxana[/name_f] is another worth putting on the list.

@sadiejosephine
Wow, you are a font of knowledge. I’m going to be mulling over this list for a while. The standouts so far are:
Stamatina
[name_m]Talor[/name_m]
[name_m]Anatolio[/name_m] (though I know a young [name_m]Anatoli[/name_m]… didn’t realise the meaning til now)
Eosphoros
Gwawr

Thanks so much for all your ideas!

then call her [name_u]Rory[/name_u].

I don’t know if this was already suggested but [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] means dawn

[name_f]Sabah[/name_f] is an Arabic/Turkish name which means morning.

This is a fabulous thread. Thanks for all of the wonderful names!

A very belated thank you to all the contributors since I last wrote;

@maggiefromcanada
I like Usha; it reminds me of [name_f]Ursula[/name_f], another name love of mine.

@potofgold
Thank you so much for alerting me to [name_f]Oriana[/name_f]; I hadn’t heard it before, and I like its rich history.

Another name I came across recently is [name_u]MORGEN[/name_u] - which, apparently, is the word for morning/tomorrow in [name_m]German[/name_m], Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, and perhaps some other languages too (spelt with an e, not an a). Any thoughts on this name? I don’t love the sound “morgue” being in there… are there any good nicknames? And is it better for a boy or a girl?

[name_m]Luke[/name_m] means ‘bringer of light’ :slight_smile:

[name_u]Morgan[/name_u] has been really overused and while I appreciate that [name_u]Morgen[/name_u] has a different meaning for you, unfortunately, many people will probably assume it’s a different spelling for [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] (and apparently according to behindthename.com it is an earlier spelling of [name_u]Morgan[/name_u])
Then again, the fact that it is so similar to [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] makes it seem less unusual and people will not find it weird.
