Collier (is it awful?) or Claire

My husband is totally set on the name [name_f]Claire[/name_f]. I love it, but it is just so very popular right now and I was hoping for something unique.

The only other name he has agreed upon is the name [name_m]Collier[/name_m], which is a family name that honors my dad. It is very significant in my family, especially because my dad is very ill. I always thought I would give it as a middle name, but never a first, especially for a girl!

Would it be crazy to name a girl [name_m]Collier[/name_m] if paired with a sweet middle name?

[name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_m]Dalton[/name_m] L—
or
[name_m]Collier[/name_m] [name_f]Elyse[/name_f] L—

Here are some names I actually love, that Hubs vetoed:
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Maren[/name_f]
[name_f]Blythe[/name_f]
[name_m]Larsen[/name_m]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]

I really dislike [name_m]Collier[/name_m] (for any gender) as a first name. A collier is a ship that carries coal or a coalminer. To me that is a really unpleasant connotation for a baby. As a middle name, however, I think it’s fine, given that it is being used to honour someone very close to you. But choose a different first name.

I don’t think [name_m]Collier[/name_m] is awful. Personally I would do [name_f]Elyse[/name_f] [name_m]Collier[/name_m] or [name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_m]Collier[/name_m], but if you think that you’d regret using [name_m]Collier[/name_m] I’d stick to it.

I would put [name_m]Collier[/name_m] as a middle name only. That way you still honor your side of the family. The thing is, that it’s clearly a surname and it sort of reminds me of border collies.

[name_f]Claire[/name_f] is lovely as a name, but would contain too many repetitive sounds if paired with [name_m]Collier[/name_m]. [name_f]Clara[/name_f] and [name_f]Clarice[/name_f]/[name_f]Clarisse[/name_f] sound a lot better to me. [name_f]Chiara[/name_f] is also lovely.

Thank you for confirming what I already thought!!!

I think [name_f]Claire[/name_f] could be all you want it to be with an unusual middle name. My hubby was set on [name_m]Erik[/name_m] for our oldest, which was too popular for me until we coupled it with an epic unusual name: [name_m]Erik[/name_m] Elderkin

[name_m]Collier[/name_m] is an important family name for you so I would really like to see you use it! I do think it is better in the middle though. [name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_m]Collier[/name_m] or [name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_m]Collier[/name_m] would get my vote.

Definitely, [name_f]Claire[/name_f]. Save [name_m]Collier[/name_m] for a boy.

[name_m]Collier[/name_m] is not awful. The majority of users on this website despise surnames as first names, especially for girls. It’s like asking a bunch of militant vegans if you should serve chicken or pork at your birthday dinner.

[name_m]Collier[/name_m] is lovely as a MN, especially when it has family significance!

I honestly don’t mind it as a first name. [name_m]Collier[/name_m] [name_f]Elyse[/name_f] sounds pleasant as well. You could always call her [name_f]Collie[/name_f] (similar to [name_f]Callie[/name_f])?

I actually really like the name [name_m]Collier[/name_m]! Surnames on girls is a big trend that has been going on for generations in the South and I don’t find it out of the ordinary. [name_u]Collins[/name_u] is in the girls’ US top 1000 if I’m not mistaken.

I met a little girl named [name_m]Collier[/name_m] once, which helps me in picturing this on a baby. I think it’s wearable - not awful - and it’s more unique than [name_f]Claire[/name_f], which I find kind of bland if you don’t mind me saying.

I don’t think [name_m]Collier[/name_m] for a girl is awful at all. It’s an occupational name, meaning coal miner, which makes it very popular. So that might be a ding against it,if you don’t like popular names (and who would?). However, if you’re still iffy on the use of it for a girl, you can always twist it so that it’s not so out there, but still honoring your father. A lot of people who honor [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f]'s just do either [name_f]Anna[/name_f] or [name_f]Belle[/name_f] and the same with other names. So to that note, you could always name her [name_m]Cole[/name_m] (or spell it Kol, for added uniqueness). It would still honor your father but not be quite a contentious idea for you. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

I don’t really like [name_m]Collier[/name_m] for a baby name. It’s a huge rental company in my area so all I think of are College Apartments. [name_f]Claire[/name_f] is gorgeous though!

I would go with [name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_m]Collier[/name_m] or [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_m]Collier[/name_m]. The second is my favorite!

I like [name_m]Collier[/name_m]! Last names as a first are very common in the South.

I like [name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_f]Elyse[/name_f] [name_m]Collier[/name_m] L—

I really dislike the ‘‘name’’ [name_m]Collier[/name_m]. As a native french speaker to me there’s no difference between someone naming their child [name_m]Collier[/name_m] or Necklace (since it is obviously the same word but in two different languages) it just sounds odd to me! But then again, it could be worst!

My cousin has a female friend named [name_m]Collier[/name_m], and it suits her well. It’s a more unusual name than [name_f]Claire[/name_f] - almost unheard of for girls - and yet it is easy to spell, look at, and pronounce. I encourage you to go with [name_m]Collier[/name_m]. [name_m]Collier[/name_m] [name_f]Claire[/name_f], maybe?
