Collins for a girl

Im loving this name a lot lately! I’ve only heard it once, which was in the movie “The Blind Side” until yesterday at the American Girl Place in [name]Denver[/name]…there was a little girl there with this name and I really love it now that it has a “face”
wdyt of this name? what are some feminine mn that could go with it?

I also love this name. I also thought of it as a last name until seeing “The Blind Side”. I would have never considered it a girl name.

I would pair it with a girly middle name.

[name]Collins[/name] [name]Sophia[/name]
[name]Collins[/name] [name]Marie[/name]
[name]Collins[/name] [name]Anneliese[/name]
[name]Collins[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Collins[/name] [name]Lillian[/name]
[name]Collins[/name] [name]Faith[/name]
[name]Collins[/name] [name]Elise[/name]
[name]Collins[/name] [name]Lucia[/name]

I would venture a guess that [name]Collins[/name] from the blind side is probably named after a family surname, as it is traditional in the south.

I like the name, but I think if it’s not your family name you shouldn’t use it. My reasoning is (although I’m probably in the minority and it’s just my 2 cents) that surnames are full of meaning to those families, and a powerful way of passing on heritage.

For example, imagine your maiden name is [name]Parker[/name] and your family has no boys. You would love to name your son [name]Parker[/name], but know 3 other little Parkers born in the past year. It takes the specialness away.

As the last in a line of '[name]Cannon[/name]'s, I totally agree with the pp. I have always wanted to name a son [name]Cannon[/name] to honor the family name, but hestitate that it will just blend in among all the other faux surnames out there. If I met a girl names [name]Collins[/name], I would immediately ask if it was a family name, and the response would totally determine my feelings for the name.

I’m of a different opinion than the above posters. My last name is [name]Miller[/name]. I’ve heard a number of other people discussing the name [name]Miller[/name] for a son. I’m never offended or insulted. It’s a name and nobody owns it. That being said, I’m from the Northeast, where surname lineage carries very little weight most of the time (I’m a [name]Miller[/name], but my last name was probably something else when my ancestors immigrated here 100+ years ago).

[name]Collins[/name] could be sweet on a little girl. I have two concerns with the name- 1) It’s kind of masculine so I’d pair it with a feminine middle, 2) it will get confused with [name]Collin[/name] a lot. Otherwise I think it’s very sweet.

I like it and certainly don’t feel that if it ain’t in the family don’t use it like some posters above, however do respect their sentiments.

I would definitely pair it with a feminine mn - maybe something classic like [name]Elizabeth[/name] or [name]Grace[/name]…

I’d also suggest looking at sib-sets for this name. Not sure if you already have children or whether you plan anymore, but consider what names you would pair with it. Would you go for other surname names and/or unisex names??

Other surname names i like:

Boys:
[name]Sullivan[/name]
[name]Rafferty[/name]
Kinsgley
[name]Digby[/name]
[name]Rigby[/name]

Girls:
[name]Campbell[/name]
[name]Elliot[/name]

I’m not a surname-as-a-firstname type, but if that’s your style then I don’t think it matters if it’s a family name or not. What would worry me with using [name]Collins[/name] after hearing it in the Blind Side is that there are probably many other parents out there who saw the movie and are now considering [name]Collins[/name]. If you don’t mind trendy names, then this won’t be an issue. But if you’re considering [name]Collins[/name] because it’s unique then I might be a little more cautious. [name]Collins[/name] is also very similar to [name]Cullen[/name] and [name]Cohen[/name], which are also surname names on the rise due to their use in movies/ TV shows. So, I could see [name]Collins[/name] getting popular in the same way. [name]Just[/name] thought I’d point all of this out. All of that aside, if you love the name and don’t care about any of the above issues, then I say use it.
