Colors You Associate With Names?

I’m aware that threads like this probably exist, but I can’t find any. So, I’m creating a new one- harmless, right?

I don’t think I have Synesthesia, but I do tend to associate words and names with certain colors and shades. To my recollection, the first case of this occurring was back in kindergarten when I was being taught the names of all twelve months, and I came to associate certain colors with them; this applies to the weekdays as well. Some of my associations are baseless while others have explanations, so stay tuned to hear my reasoning if you want.

If you're curious, here's my perception of the twelve months.

January: Powder blue. I imagine this association is due to how I perceive January as a wintery month, but not as severely as December, so my brain compensated somewhere down the middle.

February: Flamingo pink. Everybody knows that February is the month of the day of love, Valentine’s Day, so I guess I just came to associate lovey-dovey pink with the month as a whole.

March: Shamrock green. Another month where a famous holiday is attached to it. Saint Patrick’s Day is an American holiday imported from Ireland to celebrate the arrival of Christianity to that nation, whose flag sports the colors orange, white and green. With March also being the month of spring blossoming, I suppose the nature-y feel of green was inevitable in my association.

April: Magenta. Another spring month, April doesn’t have any holiday to influence my judgement of it. Generally, I see April as being a soft, floral color, hence I see it as magenta.

May: Ballerina pink. The sister month of April, May seems a bit more joyous and bubbly than she, hence the lighter, brighter shade of pink.

June: The twin of July. She’s more of a warm, sunset-type purple to me, given how she’s the beginning of summer.

July: The twin of June. Like her sister, July is purple, but more leaning towards blue, such as Indigo. It reminds me of a late summer night and the stars are scattered across the sky, with red, white and blue fireworks going off in the background for July 4th.

August: Good ol’ Auggie. He’s the tail end of summer and the nigh beginning of fall, so he’s a rusty orange for me.

September: Now we’re officially in fall, whose signature colors are red, brown, orange, and yellow. For me, September is somewhere between orange and yellow, perhaps butterscotch yellow.

October: Pumpkin orange :100: .

November: Sienna brown, like that of a turkey on thanksgiving or the leaves of fall.

December: The beginning of winter, yet I don’t envision any shade of white; more like a deep shade of midnight blue on a cold, snowy December night.

Here's my perception of the days of the week too.

Sunday: Sunny yellow, duh.
Monday: I’ve always thought of “Monday money day”, if that makes sense. So, a minty fresh green like that of a dollar bill?
Tuesday: this is like seafoam green to me.
Wednesday: pistachio.
Thursday: a blueish gray, almost like the sky on a cloudy day.
Friday: A blood orange, almost bright red.
Saturday: Pure pitch black. Perhaps to contrast Sunday?

Anyways, here are my color interpretations for masculine, unisex, and feminine names (in no particular order):

  • Astrid: rose red.
  • Arabella: ruby red.
  • Avalon: apple red.
  • Araminta: a combination of minty green and scarlet.
  • Benjamin: mustard or honey yellow.
  • Bartholomew: butterscotch yellow.
  • Clayton: cerulean.
  • Cassandra: azure.
  • Catherine: teal.
  • Christopher: cloudy turquoise.
  • Delilah: blush pink.
  • Elias/Elijah: orange.
  • Evan: ginger.
  • Evander: tiger orange.
  • Elizabeth: merigold.
  • Felicity: honey orange.
  • Florence: magenta.
  • Gabriel: emerald.
  • Henry: gingerbread.
  • Judith: lilac purple.
  • Joseph/Josephine:
  • Kelsey: lime green.
  • Lucas: sky blue.
  • Lysander: arctic blue.
  • Mallory: crow black.
  • Nathaniel: caramel.
  • Patrick: rusty auburn or shamrock green.
  • Prunella: prune purple.
  • Priscilla: ballet slipper pink.
  • Penelope: bubblegum pink.
  • Quinn/Quincy: parakeet green.
  • Skyla: pineapple yellow.
  • Tallulah: bright teal.

Alright, that’s all I can think of for now. I’ll update once I come up with some more. As always, feel free to share your color-name associations if you have any!

from the research ive done, synesthesia happens in about 1-2% of the population, although I see a lot of people on here speculate they have some form of it. it’s a lot more common for people to have associations between colors and words/letters/numbers, but the difference between that and synesthesia is the cause of it. for instance, I know that I associate [name_f]April[/name_f] with a lavender purple because of a months of the year poster in my preschool classroom. synesthesia associations can’t be drawn back to a specific cause like that.

that said, I feel like I have some strong letter-color associations, and they influence the color of names! some examples:

the letter A is dark pink, and is really strong, so many A names are some shade of pink, as are lots of names with A’s in them

E and I are white, and they make the color of names lighter. for example, [name_f]Anne[/name_f] is a lighter shade of pink than [name_f]Ann[/name_f].

O is black, and does the opposite. [name_f]Juno[/name_f] is a darker blue than [name_f]Junie[/name_f].

B, J, and U are blue
C, K, M, S, and Y are yellow (differing shades)
F and P are red
G, L, and T are green
H and N are orange
R is brown
V is purple

the rest are less strong for me

I don’t have synthesia – for me I think names have vibes that then have colors (ex: a name feels warm and bright and therefore is yellow in color) or the meaning of the name influences me. I also have certain letter names that are generally a specific color:

R – red
S and W – blue, especially more of a navy or ocean blue
V – purple
L and E – sunny yellow
M – pink or red
P and F – pink

Not every name with these initials fits the color, but a lot of them do. [name_m]Or[/name_m] sometimes it’s not the first initial, but just a prominent sound (ex: [name_f]Dvora[/name_f], [name_f]Livia[/name_f], and [name_f]Davina[/name_f] are very much purple to me).

!!! I made a thread like this for taste :grinning: I have synesthesia so I love this!

I will come back to edit this and add more but the first off of the top of my head is my all time favorite Isadora, She is both Neon lime green as well as a less intense violet, and they’re my favorite colors because they taste amazing to me, so it’s like everything just added up to my favorite name! :green_heart::purple_heart::green_heart::purple_heart:

Mara (mare-ah, not marr-ah pronunciation) is baby pink

Ethan is periwinkle

Damien is gray

Philip is dark brown

Imogen is grass green

Maria is bright red

Sylvain is steel gray and matcha green

Marigold is of course the color of marigolds but it is also light green

Gulliver is a pale honey and a light chocolate brown with a hint of different greens

I can’t really say why I associate certain names and colors, but there are definately names like Marigold where it is pretty obvious why it is that color since marigolds are literally that color :blossom:

Juni is red and black like a lady bug and I think it is because it makes me think of juniper trees and June bugs, so the ideas kind of cross over and I start thinking about lady bugs. I know it makes no sense in writing but it makes some sense in my mind lol :lady_beetle:

I have a lot of associations like this. With names I’ve noticed patterns of certain letters being associated with colors so a lot of names that start with that letter of have that letter in it feel that color. I’ve also noticed that sometimes a specific name like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] that’s purple because of the meaning is such a strong association that it’s bled out and made V a purple letter across the board and not just in violet related names. Same goes for [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] making L feel purple, but a lighter purple than V.
[name_m]Red[/name_m]- H, R
Yellow- B, E, K
[name_m]Green[/name_m]- F
[name_f]Blue[/name_f]- C, M
Purple- L, V
And J is very warm colored, often pink but also yellow, red, and brown.

Here’s a few of my faves that I get really specific shades for:
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]: bright, bubbly, slightly pinkish light purple.
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]: golden brown, almost a bronze-y shade.
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]: cornflower blue.
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f]: deep, velvety, amythyst purple.
[name_f]Bernadette[/name_f]: buttery yellow with some dark brown acccents.
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]: chocolate brown with hints of another warm color that changes depending on the nickname pick. Currently I’m going with [name_f]Effie[/name_f] which feels yellow (with some green because of the Fs).
[name_f]Jillian[/name_f]: sunshine yellow which is a bit surprising, the Ls don’t seem to be having much effect at all.
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]: total left field wild card, dark pink like a bright raspberry color. No idea why, maybe the R feels prominent so it’s pulling red/pink or maybe just because of the super princess-y feel.
[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f]: This is solidly forest green and brown which should be weird but its because the fantasy queen/woodland elf vibes are just really strong.
[name_f]Marianne[/name_f]: sky blue with yellow accents.
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]: a nearly equal split between bright bubblegum/Barbie pink, bright orange, and bright yellow.
[name_m]William[/name_m]: a very steady, calm, dark blue.
