Combined name - WDYT?

hi all! I’m new  have a question for you - my husband and I both have names we love. My fave is [name]Meredith[/name], his is [name]Laila[/name]. My biggest concern is a name being too popular (my name was very popular and it caused a lot of issues for me) - so I’m afraid of [name]Laila[/name], but I agreed it would be a good middle name. We started playing around with nicknames for [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Laila[/name], and ended up falling in love with one of the nicknames: Merelae (mare-uh-lay). Too weird? To hard to pronounce/read? That’s the best way I can think of to spell it without having “lay” on the end of the name such as Meralay. I think that’s a potential teasing issue. I welcome spelling suggestions! I love [name]Aubrey[/name] for a middle name with Merelae. Our last name starts with an A (“uh” sound) and has three syllables. Merelae [name]Aubrey[/name] A_______.

I almost think we should go with [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Laila[/name] and just use Merelae as the nickname, but I do love the name. Decisions, decisions. Thanks for any thoughts you could provide  we are trying to avoid telling anyone [name]IRL[/name] our favorite names since our families are annoyingly judgmental.

I think the sound is really cute. I can see people mispronouncing it, but that’s the same with so many names these days. Does your husband share your newfound love of Merelae? If so, I say go for it. Also, maybe think about spelling it Merelei, kind of like [name]Lorelei[/name] or [name]Leilani[/name]?

I think Merelae (or however you decide to spell it in the end) is better as a NN. It has a sweet sound but I think the spellings and pronunciations might be a headache… it’s sweet as a nn for [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Laila[/name], though. No matter how you spell Merelae/Merelay/Meralay, if she goes by the nn far enough into school, I’m sure she’ll probably get “lay” jokes–same as [name]Leila[/name] and [name]Laila[/name] would even though they’re not spelled [name]LAYla[/name]… [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Laila[/name] is lovely, though.

Good luck!

I think you should stick with [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Laila[/name] which is very pretty and use Merelae as a nn. Merelae looks made up and not in a good way and I’m afraid may cause teasing for your daughter in the future (merry lay?).

I’d just use [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Laila[/name] and use Merelay (I’d spell it Merelai) as a nn.

Sorry but I’m not a fan of made-up names. [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Laila[/name] is pretty so as other people said I think it’s better to use Merelae as nn.
