Combining Our Styles

Hello,

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I seem to have different styles and we’re not exactly sure how to combine them into that perfect first name for our child! [name_f]My[/name_f] husband tends to like more conservative, traditional names where as I am more “fashion-forward” and like names that are a little more fun.

We’re thinking that if we could find something that is maybe a traditional name but has some spark/spunk to it? We are liking the idea of a longer name with a possibility of a nickname as well. Our last name is [name_u]West[/name_u] [name_u]Brook[/name_u] (without the space and an E at the end, just don’t want it to be googled) and we’re set on using one of these as a middle name, since they are after important family members:

[name_f]Diane[/name_f]
[name_f]Louise[/name_f] (iffy on this one as we’re having “issues” with this person)
[name_u]Jean[/name_u]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
^^None of these names can be used as a first name

Thank you!

Combing styles can be very tricky… Some example names that both you and your husband like could be helpful but I will just wing it…

It was really difficult to use [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] in the middle so I used modification [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f]

I’ll give it a shot…

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]

Could you give me an idea of some of the names you like? To me, “fashion-forward” could be referring to one of several very different styles.

Thank you, we have added these to a list:

[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] “[name_f]Evie[/name_f]”
“[name_f]Lola[/name_f]” (my husband dislikes [name_f]Lola[/name_f] as a full name)
“[name_f]Millie[/name_f]” (we can’t use [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]/[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]/[name_f]Amelie[/name_f])
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] “[name_f]Tilly[/name_f]”
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] (not sure of a nickname, but we definitely want one with a name this long)
“[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]” (my husband doesn’t like [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] as a full name)
[name_f]Susanna[/name_f] “[name_f]Zanna[/name_f]”
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]/[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] (same as [name_f]Penelope[/name_f])
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]

Some names that are more my style would be:

[name_u]Zuri[/name_u]
[name_f]Coco[/name_f] (as a nickname)
[name_f]Zahara[/name_f]/[name_f]Zara[/name_f]
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]
[name_f]Paloma[/name_f]

Some names that are more my husband’s style would be:

[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Teresa[/name_f]
[name_f]Christina[/name_f]

[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] “[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]”
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_f]Diane[/name_f]
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] “[name_f]Coco[/name_f]”

[name_m]Just[/name_m] realized I missed this on my last comment:

We are warming up to the names [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] but not totally sure on them yet

Lola could be a nn for Penelope - a little bit of a stretch but not unheard of… since you like both.
“Millie”: this is my cousins nn and her full name is Camilla.
Penelope: I like Penny, and Lola best.
“Emmy” - Does Emmeline work? Emmerson?
Gwendolyn/Gwendolen: Wendy, Gwen, Lynn, Gwyn, Winnie
Coco: also my cousin’s nn - twin sister of Camilla- her full name is Constance.
Rebecca - nn Bex would be cute and modern.
Elizabeth could be nn Elsa or Elsie

Since you like Paloma how about: Mariposa nn Posy or Zenobia nn Zee or Bee, even Noa

Also: Pearl, Isobel, Minerva nn Minnie (as you like Millie), Violet, Viola, Isla, Aurelia nn Leah or Elia, Wren, Willow, Teagan, and Flora/Fleur

So, I’m going off of your above post:

[name_f]Stella[/name_f] - Use [name_f]Estella[/name_f] as a long form, [name_f]Stella[/name_f] as a nickname? Also, [name_f]Essa[/name_f], [name_f]Essie[/name_f], [name_f]Estee[/name_f], or [name_f]Esme[/name_f]?
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] - [name_f]Evie[/name_f] is an adorable nickname, love this one. [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] W. is lovely.
[name_f]Lola[/name_f] - This sounds like a first name you would like, but try it as a nickname for [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] to appease hubby!
[name_f]Millie[/name_f] - You could use this for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] as well… ([name_f]Matilda[/name_f]/[name_f]Tilly[/name_f])
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] - Can be shortened to [name_u]Pen[/name_u], [name_u]Penny[/name_u], [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Nellie[/name_f], or [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]!
[name_f]Emmy[/name_f] - It looks like all [name_f]Emily[/name_f] variants are off the table, so no [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]?
[name_f]Susanna/name_f - [name_f]Zanna[/name_f] is very chic, and [name_f]Sanna[/name_f] is lovely, too. Cute [name_f]Sosie[/name_f] is spunky and fresh, as is [name_u]Sunny[/name_u]! Like this name.
[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] - Well, you could use [name_f]Gwen[/name_f], [name_f]Gwennie[/name_f], [name_f]Wendy[/name_f], [name_f]Dolly[/name_f]? I’ve long loved [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f].
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - No real nicknames, but a nice name. Doesn’t really seem “you” based on your little list.

Others you might consider:

[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] - [name_f]Coco[/name_f] as a nickname! Or [name_f]Cora[/name_f], [name_f]Delia[/name_f], [name_f]Lia[/name_f].
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] - [name_f]Dot[/name_f] is spunky, [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] is cute, but [name_f]Thea[/name_f] is elegant and fun.
[name_f]India[/name_f] - A quintessential quirky classic, and very [name_u]Brit[/name_u] chic. [name_f]Indie[/name_f] as a nickname is fabulous.
[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] - [name_f]Cece[/name_f], [name_f]Celia[/name_f], [name_f]Lia[/name_f], [name_f]Celie[/name_f], or even [name_f]Ciel[/name_f] work as nicknames for this pretty classic.
[name_u]Abilene[/name_u] - Comfy [name_u]Abby[/name_u] as a nickname, but also vintage [name_u]Billie[/name_u] or ladylike [name_f]Lena[/name_f].
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] - [name_f]Coco[/name_f], [name_f]Cora[/name_f]? Cute as can be, but fun, spunky, charming.
[name_f]Jessamine[/name_f] - A vintage name with so much pizazz! [name_u]Jess[/name_u], [name_f]Jessa[/name_f], [name_u]Jessie[/name_u], [name_f]Minnie[/name_f]…
[name_f]Sarita[/name_f] - A [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] spin-off. [name_f]Sara[/name_f], [name_f]Sari[/name_f]?
[name_f]Mariel[/name_f] - Romantic and charming. [name_f]Mare[/name_f], [name_f]Mari[/name_f], [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f].

We’re so-so on [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], don’t have many strong feelings for it but it’s probably our best option for “[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]” (I just find it lacking a little spunk/spark). Also, did you mean [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] rather than [name_f]Margot[/name_f]? [name_f]Margot[/name_f] isn’t one of our middle name options and we don’t want to change the names since they are after family members

Please see our previous comment, I have posted a list there

[name_f]Stella[/name_f] is a name that we have both agreed we wouldn’t use a nickname for; we both surprisingly like it just as [name_f]Stella[/name_f] with no other full name/nickname.

I’m weary about [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] since we are possibly considering [name_f]Louise[/name_f] as a middle name. Things aren’t looking good so we’re probably going to axe it as a middle name and I would feel weird using it in a first name. Any other full names for [name_f]Lola[/name_f]?

We don’t really like Matilda for “Millie”, not sure why but it just doesn’t work for us

Poppy is a nickname I like but my husband isn’t really sold on it. Not really liking the others, are there any other nicknames?

[name_f]Em[/name_f]- names aren’t necessarily off the table but I just think names beginning with [name_f]Em[/name_f] lack spunk/spark. [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] is nice and probably our best option but it just doesn’t sound special to me.

I really love the sound of [name_f]Zanna[/name_f] ([name_f]Sanna[/name_f] just doesn’t have the same effect to me) and my husband likes the classiness of [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] so that’s probably our top choice right now (not liking [name_f]Sosie[/name_f], too strange in sound for me, or [name_u]Sunny[/name_u])

We don’t like [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]/[name_f]Gwennie[/name_f]/[name_f]Wendy[/name_f]/[name_f]Dolly[/name_f] for [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]/[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] :frowning: Any other nicknames?

I’m surprised myself that I like [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and that’s another name were we agreed to nickname/full name!

We like:

[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] “[name_f]Delia[/name_f]” (husband refuses to use [name_f]Coco[/name_f] at all, sounds like a dog name to him)
“[name_f]Dottie[/name_f]” and “[name_f]Thea[/name_f]” (but don’t like [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f])

I also [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]India[/name_f] but my husband hates it :frowning:

Yeah somehow it didn’t load till after I posted so I went back and made suggestions on page 2. Sorry for the mishap - dumb internets.

[name_f]Cressida[/name_f] [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f]
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_f]Elle[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Sabine[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_f]Valeska[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Oriana[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]

That’s okay, I totally understand! I have issues with our internet/computer often!

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is on our list, so of course we like that  The others aren’t for us though, sorry!

Okay! Thanks for giving us a better idea of your likes and dislikes.

If you aren’t sure about [name_f]Louise[/name_f] (personally), then I would absolutely nix it as a middle name. You have such nice other options, especially if those people are really meaningful and important in your lives.

As for [name_f]Lola[/name_f], I’m not sure! [name_m]Ah[/name_m]. I’m wondering if you might be able to get [name_f]Lola[/name_f] from [name_f]Leona[/name_f]? (I really have a thing for [name_f]Leona[/name_f], just think it’s way cool.) I could suggest [name_f]Lolita[/name_f], but I don’t think that would be a popular suggestion. [name_f]Appolonia[/name_f]/Appollonia/[name_f]Apolonia[/name_f]? Maybe [name_f]Charlotta[/name_f]?

I would tend to agree with you that [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] lacks spunky, as it’s just, and I hate to say it, overdone these days. Considering the names that you listed as your personal style, I could see why [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] and her long forms aren’t calling out to you. I’d probably also let those go, but that’s just me…

[name_f]Susanna[/name_f] is a really versatile name! I think you could also spell it [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f]. Completely legitimate spelling.

If you don’t care for [name_f]Gwen[/name_f], etc., then I’m just not thinking [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] is the name for you guys. I love it - really, it’s been on my own list on and off for years - but if you want a nickname and [name_f]Gwen[/name_f], [name_f]Wendy[/name_f], [name_f]Dolly[/name_f], etc., aren’t working, I’m struggling to find anything else. I do know of a young [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] who goes by [name_m]Dolen[/name_m] - not my style, but that’s my last idea. :-/

[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] “[name_f]Delia[/name_f]” is so pretty. [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] might be another you like in that same vein…

If you like [name_f]Dottie[/name_f], I don’t know that you’ll find a long form that isn’t a [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] variant. As for [name_f]Thea[/name_f], I happen to [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] her as a full name, and actually [name_f]Thea[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] W. is stunning (I’m sold, at least!), but longer forms of [name_f]Thea[/name_f] that are not [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] might be: [name_f]Althea[/name_f], [name_f]Anthea[/name_f], or [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite there is probably [name_f]Althea[/name_f], but I like [name_f]Thea[/name_f] herself more.

Here are some long names and possible nicknames:

[name_f]Adelina[/name_f] - [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Addie[/name_f], Dela, [name_f]Delia[/name_f], [name_f]Lina[/name_f], [name_f]Adela[/name_f], [name_f]Adele[/name_f]
[name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] - [name_f]Ana[/name_f], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Anya[/name_f], [name_f]Nastia[/name_f], [name_f]Stasia[/name_f], [name_u]Stacy[/name_u], Sia
[name_f]Angelica[/name_f] - [name_u]Angie[/name_u], [name_f]Ana[/name_f], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_u]Angel[/name_u]
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f] - [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_f]Arabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_f]Bella[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f]
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] - [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Eva[/name_f], [name_f]Vanna[/name_f], [name_u]Angel[/name_u], [name_f]Lina[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] - [name_f]Roe[/name_f], [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Rosa[/name_f], [name_u]Romy[/name_u], [name_f]Mary[/name_f]
[name_f]Violetta[/name_f] - [name_f]Vi[/name_f], [name_f]Vivi[/name_f], Vio, [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Lettie[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f], [name_f]Ettie[/name_f]
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f] - [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], [name_f]Gigi[/name_f]

We’re not totally convinced about [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] “[name_f]Lola[/name_f]” but we could keep it in mind.

[name_f]Camilla[/name_f] sounds a bit stuffy to me & we don’t like [name_u]Penny[/name_u] for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] :frowning:

[name_m]Emmerson[/name_m] is definitely not our style; we do not want a boy or unisex name

I think [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] could grow on me but my husband doesn’t like “[name_f]Winnie[/name_f] [name_u]West[/name_u] [name_u]Brook[/name_u]”

As for the last three, we are not using any of the names I listed that I like or my husband like; we can’t agree on each others choices and don’t think it would be fair to either of us to use them.

We kind of like [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] but my friend used to have a dog named [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] so that kind of makes me feel weird about it.

I like [name_f]Willow[/name_f] but my husband does not :frowning:

Yeah, I’m pretty convinced that I want to axe [name_f]Louise[/name_f] since things are just getting too messy (but my husband feels bad about not wanting to consider it as it is my grandmother and thinks we should at least think about it).

[name_f]Leona[/name_f] reminds me of [name_f]Leona[/name_f] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m], the singer. Not that it would be a bad thing, I just wouldn’t want to always think of another name when saying my child’s name. [name_f]Appolonia[/name_f]/Appollonia/[name_f]Apolonia[/name_f] are way too weird for my husband and the “a” on [name_f]Charlotta[/name_f] seems out of place :frowning: [name_f]Lola[/name_f] will probably have to go

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband thinks “[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]” just sounds so darn cute but if we can’t find a full name we love we’ll probably let it go. I really like [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], it has spunk and is a bit more unusual but my husband thinks it’ll cause too much teasing and finds it weird :frowning:

Hadn’t thought of [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] rather than [name_f]Susanna[/name_f]! I was worried that [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] “[name_f]Zanna[/name_f]” would be a bit weird since there is no “z” in the name!

Looking through the nickname options for [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]/[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] I am agreeing that it should go. I like [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] but my husband doesn’t like the double W’s.

I’ve met a horrible [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] that has forever ruined the name for me :frowning:

I feel like [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] would be hard to find a full name for besides [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]/[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] (neither of which we like). I think [name_f]Thea[/name_f] is cute as a full name but of course, my husband doesn’t agree. I like [name_f]Althea[/name_f] but he’s not agreeing :frowning: Another name that will probably have to go

We like:

“[name_f]Ada[/name_f]” (but not [name_f]Adelina[/name_f]/[name_f]Adeline[/name_f]/[name_f]Adalyn[/name_f])
"[name_f]Delia[/name_f] (but for [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] most likely)
“[name_f]Evie[/name_f]” (but probably just for [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f])
“[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]” (but not [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f])

And some more, “off the grid” names for your consideration. Just trying to get a feel for your style and how outside the box you want to go. Some of these have “traditional-esque” nickname options. I won’t list them all, just the one that is or sounds like a traditional name…

Abelia - Abby, Lia, Bea
Acadia - Cady
Adora - Addie, Dora, (maybe Dot…?)
Allegra - Allie
Amabel - Amy, Mae, Mabel, Belle
Annora - Annie, Anna, Nora
Antonella - Ana, Annie, Toni, Ella (it means “first-born”, similar to Antonia!)
Arcelia - Cece, Celia, Lia
Camellia - Lia, Mel (also consider Camilla for “Millie”)
Christabel - Chrissie, Belle
Fenella - Ella
Guinevere - Eve, Evie, Vera
Lucienne - Lucy/Lucie
Merida - Meri
Philippa - Pippa
Romilly - Milly, Romy
Seraphina - Sera

I know some of those are way out there, but some aren’t!

PS Really do like Cordelia “Delia” for you. Cordelia Margaret is my favorite. Also love Genevieve “Evie” for you! Again, Genevieve Margaret is my favorite, but Genevieve Diane could work, too. Ada for anything that isn’t an Ada-variant is a little tough, but you might get away with Madeline/Madelaine/Madeleine called “Ada.” For Rosie, does that mean you don’t want any Rose name to get to Rosie? That’s it’s most obvious link, and there are a ton of Rose names (Rose, Rosalie, Rosanna, Rosalia, Rosetta, Rosina, Rosemarie, Rosalind, Rosaline, Rosamond, Rosamund, Rosa, Rosaleen, Primrose, just off the top of my head) or a name that means “rose” (Roisin, Zaria).

PPS I think you might like Zara? It’s a Sarah variant, much more common in England. It rhymes with Mara, not Sarah.
