Compton

What do you think of the name Compton for a boy?

Is Compton, [name]California[/name] a place people would want to name their children after?

My first thought is Compton, [name]California[/name] and then the Kid [name]Rock[/name] song “Cowboy”:

I ain’t no cheat I’m just a regular failure
I’m not straight outta Compton I’m straight out the trailer

Compton, [name]CA[/name] is the first thing I think of, and I wouldn’t name my child after Compton. Sorry. :frowning:

Is it a family name? When it comes to unusual surname names I think it only works if it’s actually your family’s name

I watch [name]True[/name] Blood and have read the [name]Sookie[/name] Stackhouse books, and one of the main characters is called [name]Bill[/name] Compton. So, for me, the name is strongly tied with that. I like the sound of it. If it is a family name or has special meaning to you, I think it works.

This summed up my thoughts exactly.

From Wikipedia,

“Since the 1980s, the city of Compton was popularized in American media due to many hip hop groups and rappers originating from the community, such as the gangsta rap group N.W.A, who are best known for their debut album, Straight Outta Compton, and are widely considered one of the seminal acts of the gangsta rap sub-genre. The city of Compton as well as southern Los [name]Angeles[/name] County in general is notorious for its heavy concentration of gangs and gang violence, such as the Bloods, the Crips, and Sureños, which all originated in the Los [name]Angeles[/name] area.”

I would say this is not a good name…

[name]Edit[/name]: [name]Just[/name] to clarify, not a good name because of the gangs, not the rap.

makes me think of the song [name]California[/name] [name]Love[/name] by [name]Tupac[/name] Shakur.
Compton was a city that had a lot of gang activity and violence. not a name I would want for my son.

No. Most definitely not.

Yeah, I can’t think of anything other than the city, and unless you grew up there or have a strong personal tie to the place, it doesn’t seem like a very good city to name your child for. I’m not a fan of place names in general, or surnames as firsts unless it’s got family meaning, but unless someone has a lot of really good memories in a “bad” city, I can’t imagine why they’d name their child for it.

Same goes for kids named [name]Bronx[/name], Detroit, etc. I can see where these cities do have a lot of culture and heritage and stories, but I don’t think that overrides a generally negative connotation that most of the US has about them. If you live in another country, it may be different, but probably not.

Not a fan.

Are you NWA fans?

Seriously, take it from an Angeleno: hells to the no.
