I’ve fallen in love with the name with [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]. I’ve used it periodically in different settings but I’m still conflicted that it’s too much of an out there name.
I like it because it discretely honors both of my parents without being overly noticeable. Neither of them are earth side.
I am a single mom by choice and do plan on having one more child after this… which also leads to what would the second child’s name be? I am not religious, as I often see this theme when choosing a name such as [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m].
Names I do like: [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] for a girl.
Anyway, is [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] too much of an out there name? Am I overthinking it?
I live in the [name_m]South[/name_m] if that helps. USA
I haven’t ran into any Shepherds. I have ran into Atlas’s and Aspen’s.
[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is a completely normal name to me, and I wouldn’t assume the parents were religious. I think I have ran into it once or twice. I think it’s a really sweet name, and the connection to your parents is a nice bonus!
I think [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is a wonderful name, I don’t know any Shepherds, but I do know a [name_m]Bishop[/name_m], and I feel like those are sort of in the same vein.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the name [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]. I also would not assume a religious parents, because I think [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] has been on the rise. I love the connection to your parents too!
It’s a lovely name, and [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] and Stella/Shepherd and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] would be such a cute set!
I love [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]! If I had twin boys today they would be [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] and [name_m]Forrest[/name_m]. Perhaps too theme-y but I think they sound darling together!
It’s my teenage cousin’s name, so I don’t find it odd or out there at all. I think both [name_f]Stella[/name_f] & [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] work as siblings! [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Stella[/name_f] would also be really pretty, and avoid having two kids with the same first letter if that bothers you at all (it may not.) [name_f]Stella[/name_f] [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] would also be lovely!
on another note, I am also planning on being a single mom by choice so it’s cool to see another person making that decision on here!!
for me, sheperd is too out-there, but maybe that’s my british-ness. personally, i’d go with some other -sh name, maybe Shaun/Sean. and [name_m]Sheperd[/name_m] as a middle name. then you could use [name_m]Sheperd[/name_m] as a family/close friend nickname- i know plenty of guys who go by nickname/surname. also, i like the alliteration of [name_m]Sean[/name_m] Sherperd. I imagine [name_m]Sean[/name_m] is a lesser used variant in the US, plus i prefer it. i think that it goes well with [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] (i love these names!)
I think [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is gorgeous a really lovely spiritual name that feels peaceful, rugged and earthy. I think [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is a really great choice. However for me this name would be considered unusual IRL but feels very mainstream on Nameberry. I think maybe that’s because [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is considered differently across the world and [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is a name that to most Brits would be unheard off. In the UK [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is ranked well out the top 1000 on the popularity charts however within the southern states maybe the name feels more familiar. However I’m saying this but would love to encounter a [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] and I think due to how familiar the word is wouldn’t feel so ‘out there’. In all honesty I can envision a southern gentleman named [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] and think the name would be gorgeous.
Looking at your girls names I think [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] would be a beautiful sister choice providing a fun bohemian flair. [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] & [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] are fabulous together. I feel [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] makes the most natural sister name. [name_f]Stella[/name_f] is a great choice still I just prefer [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] but I love the idea of [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Stella[/name_f] such a cool name!
I love the name Shepherd. I named my angel baby Shepherd back in 2018. I am in the UK, where a few friends I mentioned it to didn’t react positively at first but they later said it was because they’d never heard it as a name before, only as a surname (the surnames as first name thing doesn’t feel quite as big here as over in the states). It grew on them a bit though
As you’re in the USA though, I think you’d get a different response. There were only 9 baby boys named Shepherd born in the UK in 2024, whereas in the USA there were 1100 (and 1400 in 2025). It currently ranks #246 in the USA so I think it’s much more recognisable as a name there!
I think it’s definitely usable, and I think it’s a lot less out there than a lot of other names that are popular/growing right now! I like that it honours both of your parents.
Shepherd goes well with Stella and Elowen - especially Elowen! Shepherd and Elowen remind me of @emeraldsea and I love them together

[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] doesn’t feel out there at all to me! In fact, we considered it for our second boy but I worried it was becoming too popular. [name_m]The[/name_m] little boy down the street from us was born right before our second and he was named [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]. And I feel like a lot of the moms I follow on Instagram have boys named [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]. I’m in sort of the south central US.
I adore the name, though. If our neighbor [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] wasn’t in our yard every day then I’d be tempted to use it for this baby boy, haha.
[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is a lovely name! I love the ties to your parents, which makes it feel even more usable to me, but [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is in a sweet spot of popularity right now—easy to spell and familiar, but not overly popular! I know of a couple families that used it. It’s so sweet. I would 100% say to go for it! I also love it with your girls’ choices! [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] especially feel like a dream. Best of luck!
Thank you so much for your input. We have [name_f]Sage[/name_f], [name_m]River[/name_m], and [name_m]John[/name_m] in the family at the moment as far as boys go. And then [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f]. These would all be cousins to my little one. This is my first pregnancy myself and boy names have always been much more difficult.
[name_m]The[/name_m] people that I’ve shared with like the name so far. I know in the end no matter what they’ll love him regardless of name. Thankfully, most of my family is receptive to names but I am keeping it to myself until I meet the little guy myself.
I’m in [name_m]America[/name_m] where we just assign any and all names to babies.
My last name is often mistaken as a first name: pronunciation is [name_f]Emmy[/name_f].
Sean’s not my style name but yes, I understand the out there-ness. I do believe I’m leaning toward [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] but I have to meet him first before I officially decide. Thank you for your input!
Do you have other Names that honour family names without being too out there like for your possible second child.
Shepard, for example your grandmother’s and grandfather’s.
I could also see Shepard as a middle Name.for a girl. But it also works lovely as a first Name for a Boy.
No. Both my parents are deceased. I’m picky with names and don’t like a lot. I like them on other people but not for me. I’ve also had a family member try to get me to use a name of a great-grandmother that I’ve never known or heard of until now and I’m not interested in that either.
I will name him officially when I meet him, but do think I will be going with [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m].
I really love [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]. I think it is going to get more popular and is surpassing it’s religious connotations. I know one at my kids’ school and while they are a quirky family with lots of kids (with names to die for) they are not religious as far as I know (we’re at a Steiner school).
Also, I have genuinely had it near the top of my list were we to ever have a boy. Funnily enough, we have a [name_f]Stella[/name_f] so I have ruled it out due to not wanting to repeat initials.
I also LOVE the name [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] though and I think [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] are divine together. I think [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] are also gorgeous together if you don’t mind the shared initial, though they might lean more religious sounding (due to the [name_f]Stella[/name_f] [name_f]Maris[/name_f] connotation).
I personally don’t think [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is “too out there” at all. It’s kind of in the same category as names like [name_m]Hunter[/name_m], [name_m]Archer[/name_m], [name_m]Sawyer[/name_m], etc. From an Australian perspective, it does read quite American to me, and I’d probably associate it with the [name_m]Southern[/name_m] US and possibly a more religious context just because of the word itself, but that’s more about cultural association than anything “wrong” with the name.
I also don’t think it’s too much to worry about the sibling name matching stylistically. [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] do feel quite different in vibe to [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m], but that’s totally fine. Personally I’d lean [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] just because I prefer it, and I like the idea that each child has their own initials.
I also think the meaning behind it for you makes a lot of sense, especially as a subtle honour name - that kind of personal significance tends to matter way more long-term than how “common” it is. So I say go for it!
