I am starting to consider [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. My great-grandmother’s name was [name_f]Margarethe[/name_f] [name_f]Hedwig[/name_f] [name_f]Else[/name_f] ([name_f]El[/name_f]-SUH); but she went by [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]. I never knew her unfortunately as she passed away before I was born. During the Second World War, my grandmother was separated from her family, and eventually came out to Australia to start a new life. My mum manage to locate her family and my grandmother flew back to be with her mother just before her passing. My nanna’s name is [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] so I feel like [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] could kind of honour both of them. I know one of the main characters in the new Disney feature film Frozen is named [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]; but does that matter? What do you think about the name and all?
I like the sound of [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], it’s very classic, but for me it sounds a bit too much like an old ladies name to be honest. I know no Elsas that are younger than 60.
I love the name [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and adore the nickname [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]!! I haven’t seen that disney movie so I can’t say whether that’s a big deal or not. I have met a few [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]'s in my life. One around my age (30) another was a little girl she’d be about 6 now, and one my mom’s ages (50s). I thought it was so adorable on the little girl. And given the family meaning it has for you, I think it’s perfect!
I love [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], it is my 3 year old daughters name
Surprisingly, we know 3 other little [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]'s under the age of 5 – one of them spells it [name_f]Else[/name_f], actually! We know two [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]'s (given name), as well.
To be honest, I am not thrilled at all about the Disney movie…I was a little upset when I heard about it. For one, it kind of annoys me that my daughter shares her name with a Disney princess (I also don’t want people to think she was given her name because of the princess, when she is older). I am not a princess person
Also, I have never wanted my daughter to have a popular name, and one of the things “protecting” [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] from becoming very popular is the old lady image people have. I fear that when people associate the name with an attractive Swedish princess, that the old lady image will be erased and the name will become a lot more fresh and usable for the masses. And with [name_f]Ella[/name_f] being so popular, I question if people will turn to [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] as a nice alternative.
Of course, none of this could happen…I am honestly hoping that the movie blows over and doesn’t become very well known, and [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] will still sit around the 500 mark on the charts. Whatever ends up happening after the movie, I will certainly deal with it. But if my daughter was not named yet, it would give me pause.
All that said, nothing should get in the way of using a name you love.
I love the name [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]! I love old-fashioned names, because I think it’s the new trend now. Other beautiful old-fashioned names are [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], or [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]. I will definitely be putting [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] on my list now. I think if it was in your family it’s an even better idea Go for it!
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is pretty! I think it’s one of those chic “old lady names” that are ready for a revival and it’s very similar to [name_f]Ilsa[/name_f], a named I’ve loved since I first saw [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] Bergman in Casablanca.
I’m quite fond of [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]! [name_m]Even[/name_m] with the villian princess in the Disney movie (and unfortunately [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is the ‘evil’ princess that makes everything Frozen). I actually have an [name_f]Ellsie[/name_f] (born in [name_f]September[/name_f]). [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t let the movie stop you. [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is a beautiful name.
She isn’t actually evil, she runs away because she can’t control it, so she goes into hiding. It shows that in the trailer
This was in the movie synopsis:
“Elsa has the ability to create snow and ice, yet has been suppressing these powers after a traumatic childhood incident involving her sister. After letting her cryokinetic powers get out of hand during her official July coronation, she goes into hiding, only for her emotions to trigger a magical, eternal winter that freezes the whole kingdom of Arendelle in solid ice.”
I love, love the name [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and would love to use it! But I have a cat named [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and that could get confusing. Too bad though; it is a wonderful name!
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is a gorgeous name! It’s sweet and spunky with the nickname [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]. It’s cute for a little girl and still grown up for a woman. I don’t think the Disney movie will not be a problem at all. I, personally wouldn’t have known if there was a movie with an [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] if you haven’t had written anything about it. Plus, with the family meaning. You should totally use it if you love it!
I absolutely love [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. I always have. It was on my list for all 3 babies and I will always be a bit sad that I didn’t use it. This name has everything…it is strong, feminine, funky, “global”, yet it is very pleasing to the ear and phonetically simple. You must use this name!!! The family meaning is the icing on the cake!
I think [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is a darling name, especially with the adorable nickname [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]! However, I would suggest also Elsabeth, [name_f]Annika[/name_f], [name_f]Greta[/name_f], or [name_f]Elisa[/name_f] if the name is troubling you because of the new disney movie.
I think [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is an excellent choice because it is unique and it has special meaning to you. My grandmother was [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] so my nickname was [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] or [name_f]Elle[/name_f], depending on whatever rolled off my family’s tongues. As a child, I hated my name because it sounded old and I was the only one I knew with that name but as an adult, I absolutely love it because of it’s uniqueness. I say go for it! She may give you grief about it as a teenager but long term, she’ll love it. I’m 38 years old. And I’ve never even heard of the movie and no one has mentioned it to me so don’t that affect your decision.
I’m having a similar question about the Disney association for my newborn [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and have a thread on it here: Nameberry - Welcome to the Nameberry Forums . Trying to sort out what I think about this lovely name too!! Would be curious what the original poster on this one decided…
