I have long loved the name [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f], but had scratched it from my list ages ago because I wasn’t keen on the alliteration with our surname, [name_m]Harris[/name_m].
I’m finding myself less bothered by that now though and also find myself becoming disenchanted with [name_f]Philippa[/name_f], which was #2 on my list after [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. Now I’m feeling like it doesn’t have as much impact and so I find myself drawn to [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] once again.
The real struggle now though is figuring put a middle name combo that works! I really love [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] with [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] but find that second mn is eluding me.
I have [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] there at the moment but [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_m]Harris[/name_m] isn’t ideal. I need something that is 1-2 syllables to polish things off and I’m having no luck. I’m also open to other ideas beaides Madrigal but it is my big name crush right now.
What are your thoughts on [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Philippa[/name_f]? In the event of twins do you like [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] or [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Philippa[/name_f]? What middle names would you put with [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f]?
EDIT serious considerations right now
Hypatia Madrigal Cyan/Cyane
Hypatia Madrigal Perrine
Hypatia Madrigal Phoebe
Hypatia Madrigal Daphne
Oh [name_u]Cyan[/name_u] and [name_f]Perrine[/name_f] are both interesting! I love [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f] even if it does make the entire name rather long. Great suggestions!

I do prefer [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] to [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] and I like [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] together but a big part of that might be because I’ve only come across [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] today, having never encountered it before
Thank you for your suggestions!
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] is definitely an unfamiliar one to most. I considered it mainly because of the scholar and mathematician [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] of [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f]! Since we have a son named after [name_m]Archimedes[/name_m] of Syracuse it feels only appropriate to at least consider name from a great thinker of antiquity.
I really like [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], [name_f]Lenore[/name_f], and [name_f]Fleur[/name_f]!
[name_f]Sidonie[/name_f] as the fm is nice too.
I really want to love [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] for her history, being so unusual, okay meaning, pretty much perfect except I can’t like the sound (I’ve always disliked -sha endings). But I think she’s a great choice for others, and she’d go so well with your son’s name. I do prefer her to [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] and although both go well with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], I prefer her strength with equally tough and feisty [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. As for middles, I like [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] from your list, I like the slightly ancient feel [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] has. I’d also suggest:
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Clio[/name_f]/[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Nyx[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]
Not a bad name in English, but keep in mind that in Greek it’s pronounced ee-pah-TEE-ah, a bit too close to Hepatitis B for me. A similar name is Chariclea/Hariclea (and since you care about origin, Chariclea/Hariclea is a main character in an ancient Greek novel)
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Niobe[/name_f] (too Greek?)
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Twila[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Elva[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_u]Rue[/name_u]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Eula[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Tula[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Opal[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Clover[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Ida[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Elza[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_u]Dune[/name_u]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Io[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Anouk[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_m]Rune[/name_m]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Snow[/name_f]
Thank you so much fot your input! [name_f]Nyx[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f] are both wonderful suggestions. I love [name_f]Thea[/name_f] but don’t use it because of our son’s mn.
We would be using the anglicized pronunciation as we live in the states but I’ve always thought the Greek pronunciation was very pretty!
Thank you for your suggestions. No-one definitely isn’t too Greek.
[name_f]Io[/name_f] and [name_f]Elza[/name_f] are great, and there are a few more here I’m going to take a look at!
First off, I loooove [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f]. Absolutely everything you could wish for in a namesake, and not a bad sound either. [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] and [name_m]Archimedes[/name_m] would have an amazing vibe together.
That said, I do think [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] goes a bit better with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] ([name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] being the only name you mentioned that I like better than [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f]) since they both have a more buttoned-up, aristocrat-scholar feel. (If you want to make [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] match [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f], maybe you’d consider Viatrix? It’s a big leap, but equally distinctive and badass.) I also think [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] is familiar enough to pair with more out-there middles without being too overwhelming, while [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] seems to me to do better with more classic, tame middles to ground it.
Of your [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] middles, I like [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] best! Both familiar and easy to say without losing that Hellenic feel.
Suggestion-wise…hmm. Since you like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], maybe you’d like [name_f]Ines[/name_f]/[name_f]Inez[/name_f]? I think having the emphasis on the second syllable makes it flow a little better with [name_m]Harris[/name_m].
Not sure if they’re to your taste, but the other thing that might go nicely here is a Welsh or Irish name that doesn’t end in an -a sound, like [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] or [name_f]Anwen[/name_f].
Question: would it be strange to go with something more French for the final middle?
Like [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Yvaine[/name_f]? Wondering if [name_f]Yvaine[/name_f] (ee-vain) would be strange pronunciation wise in comparisons to [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] (zan-thee) which I have paired with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]?
I mean that’s theoretical anyways so I’m probabky overthinking lol.
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] or [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] [name_f]Madrigal[/name_f] [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]! I like the idea of at least one familiar middle to keep the name from giving off a weirdo vibe. I love your [name_m]Archimedes[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] for that reason. The familiarity of [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] balances bold and unusual [name_m]Archimedes[/name_m] perfectly.
No I don’t think that would be strange. I think you would be limiting yourself too much if you’re considering whether the middle name pairs well with that of possible future children, and I don’t think they need to match that much or any non-namenerd would notice.
