ʕ ᵔᴥᵔ ʔ cool names from your family tree!

i’ve lost a couple family members over the past few years and it’s prompted me to do a bit more genealogical research into the side of my family that i don’t know as much about. one of my parents has done lots of research super far back and the other’s family immigrated to america more recently, so hasn’t been able to find as much and knows more from word of mouth. looking more into both sides has taught me lots of cool names and it’s been really exciting!!

i love to hear about people’s family history, so if you have any relatives with cool names, any names that have been passed down a lot, or any names with cool stories, i’d love to hear them!

one of my favorite stories from my family tree is about my grandmother’s name, !sabelle. the story goes that, a couple generations back, a wealthy irish woman fell in love with one of her father’s stable boys, and when her parents wouldn’t approve of the match, they decided to run away to america together. their friend, !sabelle, helped them to get married and escape in secret, and, in memory of her friendship and what she did for them, they named their daughter after her. that !sabelle was my great great grandmother, and years and years later, my grandmother was named after her! it’s such a cool story and i think someday i may pass the name along to keep the story alive.

What a special reason that !sabelle came to be in your family tree!
Names that have been used in 2/3 generations in my family are [name_u]Jean[/name_u], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_u]Josie[/name_u], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and they tend to go from aunt to niece. I only fully know my family tree back to my great grandparents and all of these come from the maternal side. I think learning about the paternal ancestors will be a project in the near future!

my younger brother keeps a detailed family history log and i believe he has gone back to 1700s (only on my dad’s side though as my mums side is from all over and is very hard to keep track of) but i don’t have access to that at this moment so from my memory (and only going as far back as my grandparents) some interesting names are…

my grandma (dad’s side) marsha carole - born 1930s
my aunt (by my uncle’s marriage) rita may - born 1950s
my nephew (from my older sister) felix boyd - born 2010s
my youngest sister betsy aurora - born 1990s
my aunt (my dad’s sister) mikayla jeanne - born 1960s

I love my nanna’s name

Evelyn Genevieve

She’s always just been known as Genevieve, didn’t know her name was Evelyn until a couple years ago!

From my mum’s side of the family:

[name_f]My[/name_f] great great grandfather shares the middle name “Twin” with his twin, who’s first name was [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. So there’s a “Twin Twin” in my family :joy:

I have a 6th great grandfather named [name_m]Griffith[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] (fn + ln) after his father [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Griffith[/name_m] (fn + ln).

Another 6th great grandfather named Hopkin, who had a son named Hopkin too.

There’s also a relative named [name_m]Tudor[/name_m].

From my dad’s side of the family:

[name_f]My[/name_f] great great grandfather has two middle names - the second of which is Narbert. He had a brother with the middle name [name_u]Augustine[/name_u], which is pretty cool.

I find genealogy fascinating and absolutely love that my family have documents and records dating back a few centuries. We’re a Welsh family going back as far as we can find and I think the names reflect that! [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite names on my family tree are:

B: [name_u]Merlin[/name_u], [name_u]Emrys[/name_u], [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], [name_u]Meredith[/name_u], [name_m]Gwilym[/name_m], [name_u]Emlyn[/name_u], [name_m]Ieuan[/name_m], [name_m]Percival[/name_m], [name_u]Rhys[/name_u], [name_m]Alun[/name_m], [name_m]Aneurin[/name_m], [name_m]Tudor[/name_m], [name_m]Lloyd[/name_m], [name_u]Penrose[/name_u] and [name_m]Llewelyn[/name_m].

G: [name_f]Eleri[/name_f], [name_f]Eira[/name_f], [name_f]Gladys[/name_f], [name_f]Gwen[/name_f], [name_f]Olwen[/name_f], [name_f]Enid[/name_f], Lluci, [name_f]Cariad[/name_f], [name_f]Eirian[/name_f], [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f], [name_f]Lynette[/name_f], [name_u]Seren[/name_u], [name_f]Anwen[/name_f], [name_u]Gwynedd[/name_u], [name_f]Arianwen[/name_f], [name_f]Angharad[/name_f] and [name_f]Mair[/name_f].

I like Hsiao-Mei. It means “Little Mei” in Chinese and is the name of my great grandmother (found out what she is named just some time ago) Giancarlo is cool too. The other names like Lisa, Maria etc in my close family feel a bit plain to me

Sadly, I do not know much of my family genealogy - Only until my great grandparents (and not even where they born, but the names; found their names very recently), and some cousins. You guys are so lucky, really, to know the first and middle names of your genealogy

I have an ancestor named [name_u]Swan[/name_u] ! I’ve always wanted to include it in a future child’s name, somehow. :slightly_smiling_face: [name_u]Swan[/name_u] was a warrior in the 1600s, if I recall correctly.

after over 2 hours of intensive research. I found it, my family tree.
