For those who place their priority on the meaning of a name or just feel that they add to the name itself, what are some of the most unique/coolest name meanings you seen?
As an example, I learned a few months ago of the name [name_f]Naia[/name_f], meaning “dolphin” and “to flow”. I thought that was so precious.
Oh, so many! Names with Yoruba origins tend to have gorgeous meanings, [name_f]Abeni[/name_f] and [name_u]Ayodele[/name_u] being two of my personal favorites.
Some unique names with really beautiful meanings…
Feminine
Abeni (Yoruba) “We asked for her, now she is ours”
Alemayehu (Arabic) “I have seen the world” (unisex)
Hephzibah (Hebrew) “[name_f]My[/name_f] delight is in her” (What does @seawillow think? It seemed like one of the names on my list that could also belong on yours!)
Rui (Japanese) “Tears of affection”
Masculine
Ayodele (Yoruba) “[name_f]Joy[/name_f] has come home”
Alemayehu (Arabic) “I have seen the world” (unisex)
Larson (Latin) “Crowned with laurels”
Oskar (Germanic) “[name_u]Friend[/name_u] of deer”’
Thoreau ([name_u]French[/name_u]) “Strength of a bull”
Rosebay — Rosebay is another name for Coast Rhododendrons. [name_f]Naida[/name_f] — [name_f]Naida[/name_f] means “sea / water nymph” in Greek. It’s very powerful, but feminine and I love this name dearly. [name_f]Pania[/name_f] — [name_f]Pania[/name_f] is a mythological sea maiden in Maori culture, hence the name meaning “sea maiden”. [name_f]Aihe[/name_f] — Another one of my favorites. She means “dolphin”. Venilia — One of my absolute favorite names. Venilia is the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] deity of the sea and the winds, hence meaning “Of the [name_u]Sea[/name_u] & Winds”. Shachi — Shachi means “orca” in Japanese. Shachi is also the nickname given to J-19 of the [name_u]Southern[/name_u] Resident orcas, which I think is so sweet. [name_u]Sora[/name_u] — “Conch shell” in Korean. Something you don’t see too often! It’s very pretty too. Seagazer — A name I made up by combining sea and stargazer. Seagazing is one of my favorite things in the world, and I absolutely love this name! Saturna — Most people would assume Saturna means “saturn”, but she doesn’t! Saturna means “growth” in [name_m]Roman[/name_m]. However, I like thinking that she means “island” because my first association is the [name_u]Southern[/name_u] Resident orca, K-43 “Saturna”, who was named after Saturna [name_u]Island[/name_u] in British [name_f]Columbia[/name_f].
[name_m]Ronan[/name_m] — [name_m]Ronan[/name_m]'s meaning is darling— “[name_m]Little[/name_m] [name_m]Seal[/name_m]” I love the vibes and the imagery. [name_m]Petrichor[/name_m] — [name_m]Petrichor[/name_m] is a word meaning “the smell of [name_f]Earth[/name_f] after rain”. Seabrook — Seabrook means “brook by the sea” [name_m]Torben[/name_m] — “[name_u]Thunder[/name_u] [name_m]Bear[/name_m]”. How sweet is that?? [name_u]Aberdeen[/name_u] — [name_u]Aberdeen[/name_u] means “Mouth of the [name_u]River[/name_u]”. It’s the name of a city near me, and is also the name of a city in [name_u]Scotland[/name_u],
[name_f]Ngaio[/name_f] means “reflections on the water”
[name_u]Irie[/name_u] means “positive and powerful”
[name_f]Apricity[/name_f] “the warmth of the sun in winter”
[name_f]Aziza[/name_f] “powerful and beloved”
[name_f]Eleodora[/name_f] “gift of the sun”
[name_m]Wilfred[/name_m] “desires peace”
[name_m]Torben[/name_m] “thunder bear”
I also love using flower symbolism for meaning like [name_u]Yarrow[/name_u] symbolizes everlasting love.
Is assume this is a Hawaiian meaning? That only applies when spelt Ohana, a Hawaiian word basically meaning family but really is anyone that you are close to or is in your social circle.
[name_m]Alaric[/name_m] - ruler of all
[name_m]Leander[/name_m] - lion of a man
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] - friend of deer
[name_f]Paloma[/name_f] - dove
Rocío - dew
[name_f]Liat[/name_f] - you are mine
Lots of Chinese and Japanese names have beautiful and unique meanings too. If you’re interested, here is a source I found about popular elements in Chinese girls’ names and their meanings.
This was a great thread, I would love to bring it back!

I love [name_m]Torben[/name_m] (Thunder Bear) but haven’t found another boy’s name meaning that I feel compares and its driving me nuts! I’m unrealistically convinced it will solve all my naming troubles
