Cooper for a GIRL?

Please help! We are considering naming our girl [name]Cooper[/name], but I’m just too afraid what other people will think. It seems like everyone says [name]Cooper[/name] is strictly a boy name, but since it is traditionally a surname it shouldn’t be gender specific (ie [name]Taylor[/name], [name]Mckenzie[/name]). I feel like the name could surge in popularity among girls pretty soon. [name]Do[/name] you know of any girls named [name]Cooper[/name]? I would appreciate any input. Oh and I’ve already thought of the ‘pooper-scooper’ nickname. Thank you so much!

Most occupational names that end in “er” are too masculine for a girl in my opinion. [name]Cooper[/name] is one of those names that really should be left for the boys. [name]Harper[/name] is a better choice for a girl as it has a female literary connection with [name]Harper[/name] [name]Lee[/name], author of “To Kill A Mockingbird”. Sorry but I’m not a fan of this choice for a girl at all. Save it for a boy or use it in the middle name spot. Other surnames that would work well for girls are [name]Auden[/name] and [name]Ellery[/name]. Best wishes!

I know of one little girl named [name]Cooper[/name]. I prefer it for a boy, and on Nameberry you aren’t likely to get much love for it, but it’s no worse than any other, more popular surname-as-a-first-name on a girl.

I will be honest – I don’t care for the name on either gender, and I really can’t see it on a girl. I am not big on surnames and boys names on girls, though. I really can’t say that I would enjoy having the name [name]Cooper[/name], but of course you never know…the right girl could pull it off.

I expected the name wouldn’t get much love! I am open to any suggestions. From what you may have gathered, I’m not really into the girly names. I don’t want anything that’s really trendy right now ([name]Olivia[/name], [name]Eva[/name], [name]Emma[/name]) and I don’t care for classic type names either ([name]Grace[/name], [name]Frances[/name], [name]Emily[/name]) I am having such a hard time. due in 8 weeks and hubby is pretty much set on [name]Cooper[/name]. Help!!!

What about Adler, [name]Piper[/name], [name]Harper[/name], [name]Adair[/name], [name]Auden[/name], [name]Dagny[/name], [name]Darby[/name], [name]Emerson[/name], [name]Sawyer[/name], [name]Sutton[/name], [name]Monroe[/name], [name]Bardot[/name], [name]Collins[/name]?

good luck!

[name]Cooper[/name] really doesn’t surprise me any more than [name]Greer[/name], [name]Taylor[/name] or [name]Jamie[/name]. I don’t care for it personally- I have an etymologically male name and have always hated it- but it’s your kid, and you should choose a name you like. I consider occupational surnames male, because they wouldn’t be used for females when they first came about. “[name]Cooper[/name]” was a word referring to a male in that occupation, and later a last name. Similarly, [name]Mackenzie[/name] means “[name]Son[/name] of [name]Kenzie[/name] (via Coinneach)” and [name]Taylor[/name] referred to a [name]Taylor[/name] (virtually all of whom were male). For these reasons, I consider -son and occupational surnames masculine. I don’t like boy’s names on girls, especially having one myself, but, like I said, it’s your child, do what you want.

Now don’t despair as the naming process should be fun. Here are some unisex or surname type names that would work well for a girl. I hope you can find the ideal name for your daughter.
[name]Ellery[/name] / Ellerby
[name]Greer[/name] / [name]Grier[/name]
[name]Reagan[/name] / [name]Regan[/name]
[name]Lee[/name] / [name]Leigh[/name]
[name]Merle[/name] / [name]Merrill[/name]

I’ve never heard of [name]Cooper[/name] on a girl, but I don’t think it’s terrible. My daughter’s name is [name]Logan[/name] and I get either “love it” or “hate it.” Have you considered [name]Logan[/name], [name]Mason[/name], or [name]Blake[/name]? All of those have the same feel as [name]Cooper[/name], but are used more on girls than [name]Cooper[/name] is (at least [name]IMO[/name]). We’re having daughter number 2 this spring and are naming her [name]Holland[/name], though [name]Harper[/name] was a close second.

No…no…and no.

Um. I actually think [name]Cooper[/name] on a girl is quite cool! I get the image of a pretty little laid back chick. Personally I think [name]James[/name] as a girls name is much worse and I can’t stand the name [name]Taylor[/name] because it’s so overdone. I also don’t like [name]Harper[/name], as much as I love To Kill a Mockingbird. I think it’s becoming the new [name]Taylor[/name] and I don’t like the image that jumps into my head.
Maybe you could use [name]Cooper[/name] as a middle name? The more I think about it the more I like it!
You have my nameberry love

Nope, I don’t like [name]Cooper[/name] for a girl … or really for a boy, either.

[name]Copper[/name], on the other hand, while not a name I would use… is definitely a guilty pleasure. =p

Dislike. I don’t really care for [name]Cooper[/name] on anyone, but it’s just too harsh and ugly for a girl. The only -er surname I like on a girl is [name]Harper[/name], but even things like [name]Parker[/name] and [name]Spencer[/name], while i still can’t stand them on girls, are more unisex than [name]Cooper[/name]. I really think you should keep looking.

I was thinking about your post alot and a name came to me for your daughter. Personally, if a more gender-neutral name is chosen for a girl, I would go for a more feminine name in the middle spot. However, you don’t really like traditional girls so I’ll give my original name [name]Tobin[/name] [name]Grace[/name] a makeover and call her [name]Tobin[/name] [name]Gray[/name] nn [name]Toby[/name]. It’s a fun name for a girl with lots of spunk. What do you think?

[name]Lauren[/name]-kay : Hubby really likes you! LOL
[name]Mischa[/name]: Thanks for the huge list. I do like a lot of those names

I think [name]Cooper[/name] for a girl is AWESOME!!! My husband and I are naming our daughter [name]Cooper[/name] [name]Layne[/name] and we love it. Although, you may want to hear the opinions of others on a name for your child, the only thing that matters is if you and your husband agree on it. [name]Set[/name] the trend, don’t follow the trend!

Good [name]Luck[/name] with your baby!

Nope! Not for me.

Adorable! I have a dog that’s a boy named [name]Cooper[/name] but oh my gosh I just love the name even more when it’s for a girl though! It makes me think of a sweet, shy, cute girl.

I know a girl [name]Cooper[/name], but it is spelled Kooper. I dislike the name for a girl, but it is even worse with the K spelling. Reminds me of Koopa Troopers from the [name]Mario[/name] games. My [name]MIL[/name] wanted us to name our son [name]Cooper[/name], but I know at least 3 dogs named [name]Cooper[/name] (all of them yellow labs), so I just couldn’t picture it on a child.
