Coraline?

[name_f]My[/name_f] partner and I rarely agree on names, especially girl names. He really likes [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] and it is a nod to a [name_u]Neil[/name_u] Gaiman novel. I like the novel, but the name sounds made up to me. I like [name_f]Cora[/name_f] and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] but can’t get 100% on board with [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]. WDYT?

I recently watched the movie version of [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], which freaked my daughter and me right out so now I have bad vibes with [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]. But I definitely see it as a real name - and I see it’s derived from [name_f]Coral[/name_f] (which is one of my favourite names). I think use it unless you prefer [name_f]Cora[/name_f] more (ie you think you’d shorten it all the time anyway), it’s more than usable! It’s an artsy, pretty name - along with [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], [name_f]Lucette[/name_f], [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] etc.

[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] is gorgeous :crystal_ball:

I think [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] is such a lovely name she’s earthy, ethereal, majestic and witchy. I think she’s gorgeous definitely feels established I wouldn’t say [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] is made up at all she feels like an extension of [name_f]Cora[/name_f]! I think [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] is lovely if you love her go for it

[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] is a lovely name! I don’t think it sounds especially made up. People will think of the movie, but for me that’s not a bad thing at all, it was my favourite movie when I was a little girl and it’s still in my top five as an adult! The name has a beautiful, sweet sound, and cute nicknames. It’s a great choice!

Definitely not a made up sounding name to me. I find it as a good choice between what I see as an overly used [name_f]Cora[/name_f] and a somewhat dated [name_f]Caroline[/name_f].

I am terrified of that movie and love the name. If you are not terrified of it and get to use the name I am jelly.

[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] is cute, I approve.

I like [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] for its autumn feel. Try watching the movie, I like it better than the book and it’s a nice story.

It’s not made up, the author thought he did, but it also a [name_u]French[/name_u] name (but pr. -leen).

[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is a bit dated to me and I don’t like [name_u]Caro[/name_u] or [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] very much. [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] is more unusual, fresh and cool. [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] gives me country vibes but is a sunny and friendly name as well.

[name_f]Cora[/name_f] I dislike.

So, [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] does have a little history:

It was created by the [name_u]French[/name_u] composer [name_m]Adolphe[/name_m] [name_m]Adam[/name_m] for one of the main characters in his opera [name_m]Le[/name_m] toréador and was most likely inspired by the name [name_f]Coralie[/name_f], which in itself is a diminutive or [name_f]Coral[/name_f], or, a [name_u]French[/name_u] variant of [name_f]Koralia[/name_f] (meaning coral)

All of that said, I like [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] - distinctive but familiar, witchy but friendly, elegant and frilly, but sharp and sleek too.

Still, if it isn’t doing it for you, then I’d still try to find something else

I love [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]! It’s my favorite movie and I like the book too. The name was made up by [name_u]Neil[/name_u] Gaiman, you’re right about that. But I’d say it’s famous enough that anyone would accept it as a name now. The character in the novel is a great role model for little girls, too. Unlike in the movie, in the book she’s shy and scared, but proves herself to be brave by facing her fears.

I have seen the movie and liked it more than the book. You’re right, she is a good role model.

I love [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] :black_cat:

It was my sister’s favorite movie when she and I were little, and though it terrified me… I loved it, too. As creepy and story as [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] is (as a book and a movie), it is at its core a story of the value of love, friendship, and family—of the importance of togetherness. Plus… it’s a darn spunky and sparkly name! I’ve met a baby [name_f]Wednesday[/name_f], so why not [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]. [name_f]Cora[/name_f] + [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] = so stunning.

I have the same feelings you do.
I think [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is lovely, but I just can’t get behind [name_f]Coraline[/name_f].

It sounds pretty to me as Coraleen but [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] (how it’s pronounced in the movie) just sounds harsh. It’s also a bit macabre due to the association with the movie. [name_f]Cora[/name_f] or [name_f]Coralie[/name_f] sound better.
