Cosima...in North America?

We are still working on narrowing down a list for baby number three, And although we have a couple of names we really love ([name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], in particular) we still keep coming back to one that is a little less used: [name_f]Cosima[/name_f].

We love it, and coming from [name_f]England[/name_f] know it as a fairly unique but not unheard of name. However, in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] (where we are now) we are concerned that it would be completely out there and/or prove a stumbling block with pronunciation etc. for our daughter.

We would love to hear some feedback on how it might fly in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u]/Canada! We ideally want to channel a more classic/ [name_f]English[/name_f] vibe, rather than a “too weird” one!

([name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] would likely be the full name, and cece as nickname).

I think [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] is absolutely perfect!! It hits just the right mark of unique but not too out there. I’m in the northwestern U.S. and it’s definitely heard of here, but not frequently used. [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] “[name_f]Cece[/name_f]” is absolutely beautiful!! I don’t see a single problem with this name. It’s unique but known, it’s timeless, it flows well, and it’s incredibly gorgeous  believe me, I don’t often go crazy over names, but this is just perfect. It definitely gives me the right vibes!! I don’t get weirdness from it at all. I’m giving [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] a strong yes!!

I’m from the US, but the name [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] is so cute! It’s definitely not “too weird” but maybe unheard of here. The nn [name_f]Cece[/name_f] is also super cute and I love the classic middle name choice!

I love it! If you were worried about [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] being a bit too much, the middle name [name_f]Jane[/name_f] definitely balances it out. I like [name_f]Cece[/name_f] as a nickname, but I just want to recommend Cosy as a nickname, I think that would be really cute.

Love it, but makes me think of Corset. I might add this to my own list, actually! ^.^

I think it is very pretty! [name_u]Coco[/name_u] could be a cute nickname. I do love [name_f]Alice[/name_f] though, and [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] is sweet

Ohh, I love [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], and [name_f]Cece[/name_f] is too cute! I was going to suggest Cozy or [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] but [name_f]Cece[/name_f] is even better.:heart_eyes:

I love [name_f]Cosima[/name_f]—[name_f]Audrey[/name_f] [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is on my short list, actually!—and I think a nn really helps make [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] more usable? I’ve heard a couple different pronunciations so it may require a couple corrections (I say KAW-sih-mah), but [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] is totally worth it, imo! I would love to meet a little [name_f]Cosima[/name_f]. For what it’s worth, I am in the northeast US atm.

Cosima is gorgeous! There will likely be pronunciation issues, and I think it more Italian than [name_f]English[/name_f], but it’s a lovely name none the less and I think it would work perfectly fine in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u]. I don’t think it’s weird at all.

Oh, thank you all so much! This is much more positive feedback than I expected!

I imagine Orphan [name_m]Black[/name_m] has made the name more familiar to people in [name_f]Canada[/name_f], although you may have to correct pronunciation. I love [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]!

I don’t think it would be weird in [name_u]America[/name_u], it’s an established name. Beautiful name, by the way.

@Dechen I haven’t heard of Orphan [name_m]Black[/name_m] — I’ll have to investigate that one!

Cosima [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is beautiful. It’s unqiue but not difficult to say or wear

I was also going to mention Orphan [name_m]Black[/name_m]! That’s where I first heard the name and I pronounce like they do in the show. [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is lovely, and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] would be a great sister name for down-the-line.

I’m in the US and I don’t think [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] is “too out there.” For some reason, it always makes me think of [name_u]Les[/name_u] Mis, even though that’s [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] and not [name_f]Cosima[/name_f]. xD Not having actually heard the name aloud, I would have initially mispronounced it incorrectly (if not for the fact I just looked up the pronunciation), but it wouldn’t be a hard correction to make to pronounce it properly.

I just looked up the Orphan [name_m]Black[/name_m] Reference that a couple of responders brought up. The name is pronounced differently in the show from the pronunciation I’ve heard! I think it’s perhaps the Italian way?

The name as I know it in the UK (And I only know two people in [name_f]England[/name_f] with this name) is pronounced COSima…Without the long “[name_f]Zee[/name_f]” emphasis. To my ear, this is a more lyrical pronunciation.

Thanks so much for giving me a heads up on this. To be honest, I am not as keen on the tv show pronunciation, and if that is the one most people are familiar with that might be a deciding factor for me.
