So I have recently been talking to a guy. He’s funny, cute and nice… all the necessary things. He wants what I want out of life and we have some things in common. I think I could really like him…
His name is [name]Earl[/name].
Now if my name were something timeless like [name]Kate[/name] or [name]Sarah[/name] or [name]Christine[/name] or [name]Mary[/name], it wouldn’t be so bad. But my name is not timeless. It has a very specific time: about ten years after I was born.
[name]Earl[/name] and [name]Sierra[/name]. It feels VERY may-december to me. Yet, he’s a year younger than me! This doesn’t bother me too immensely, of course. I know if it’s meant to be it won’t matter. I just wanted to share.
So I’m wondering if you guys have any thoughts. Also, do you know any couples whose names don’t seem to go together? Or any that do go exceptionally well?
lol, I actually love [name]Earl[/name]! It was my great-grandfather’s name. I agree that [name]Earl[/name] and [name]Sierra[/name] don’t mesh the best, but if he’s a great guy I wouldn’t really care.
I haven’t really met any guys where I thought their names fit badly with mine–[name]Ashley[/name] and [name]Daniel[/name], [name]Ashley[/name] and [name]Adam[/name], [name]Ashley[/name] and [name]Joe[/name], [name]Ashley[/name] and [name]David[/name], etc., they all sound fine to me, lol. But one of the guys I had a HUGE thing for (still kind of do, lol) has the last name Weigley. I couldn’t help thinking if we got married my name would be [name]Ashley[/name] Weigley. lol. Somehow it doesn’t sound as bad as [name]Ashley[/name] [name]Bailey[/name] or [name]Ashley[/name] [name]Hadley[/name] to me, but it’s still pretty bad. Another crush’s ln sounds like McCookie–I always thought [name]Ashley[/name] McCookie would sound really funny, lol.
I can’t really think of any that sound odd that I know… hum. Lots that fit really well together though. And some that are silly because they are so close.
[name]Jenn[/name] & [name]Jerry[/name] - gotta love alliteration. Plus [name]Ben[/name] & [name]Jerry[/name], haha. My grandmother has actually called them this before.
[name]Natalie[/name] & [name]Nathan[/name] (They go by [name]Nat[/name] & [name]Nate[/name]!)
[name]Al[/name] & [name]Alison[/name]… [name]Al[/name] and [name]Ali[/name] they go by - so silly!
And I know multiple couples named [name]Adam[/name] and [name]Amanda[/name]. Weird. I think it is just my age group both [name]Adam[/name] and [name]Amanda[/name] are common. Also [name]Matt[/name] & [name]Jen[/name]/[name]Jenn[/name] seem to be a common couple combo.
I think when you know a couple for a little bit, it just becomes natural. I can’t think of any couples that I know who’s names truly sound funny together. I really am trying to think of one, but none of them seem odd
aftersh0cks, I [name]LOVE[/name] your signature. I feel the same way about my writing!
I agree! Once you’ve known a couple for a while it begins to sound natural.
And I am also weirded out when they have the same name. [name]Taylor[/name] Swift and [name]Taylor[/name] Lautner creeped me out. Also, I knew a couple whose names were [name]Amber[/name] S. (sounds like) Batfield and [name]Amber[/name] S. Batt.
I think my fiance and I’s names don’t necessarily “fit”. Mine was super popular when I was born ([name]Jennifer[/name]) and his has never really been crazy popular ([name]Ross[/name]). Most couples I know have names that were somewhat popular for our age group. I guess I also don’t put a lot of thought into how couple names go together unless the names are really similar or something ([name]Aaron[/name] and [name]Erin[/name], [name]Daniel[/name] and [name]Danielle[/name], stuff like that).
My friend [name]Linnea[/name] married a guy named [name]Herman[/name], which I thought was odd. But [name]Herman[/name] is one cool cat, so you get over it!
[name]Tory[/name] and [name]Todd[/name] [name]Tory[/name], [name]Jen[/name] and [name]Ben[/name], [name]Jaime[/name] and [name]Justin[/name], [name]Ana[/name] (Anamarta) and [name]Andy[/name], [name]Stephanie[/name] and [name]Scott[/name], [name]Cassy[/name] and [name]Henry[/name]. I generally only notice it if it has the same beginning or end sound, or has the same number of letters. I don’t know any personally, but maybe if I met some where one name was much more trendy and the other more timeless. (Ex: [name]Luna[/name] and [name]Bradley[/name].) I do know a [name]Richard[/name] and Krysti ([name]Krystofer[/name]). Krysti is my sister!
I do agree with others, though, that the combinations only seem odd initially. Once you get used to it they no longer seem weird.
I really don’t see the importance of names of a couple having the same feel. They come from a different family, so I think it’s just very expected that their names are of different styles. So for me [name]Earl[/name] and [name]Sierra[/name] doesn’t sound better nor worse that [name]John[/name] and [name]Mary[/name].
Here are some interesting couple names I know that I think complement each other very well:
[name]Daniel[/name] and [name]Danielle[/name] - go by [name]Danny[/name] and [name]Dani[/name] (engaged)
[name]Aaron[/name] and [name]Karen[/name] (engaged)
[name]Lawrence[/name] and [name]Lorelei[/name] - go by [name]Larry[/name] and [name]Lori[/name] (married)
[name]Jeffery[/name] and [name]Jennifer[/name] - go by [name]Jeff[/name] and [name]Jenn[/name] (married) - Also, [name]Jeff[/name]'s sister married a man named [name]Jeffrey[/name] nn [name]Jeff[/name]
I also have a friend who has three brothers and they all married girls named [name]Sarah[/name]
I know a couple who are both named [name]James[/name] and both go by [name]Jim[/name]
I know another couple who are both named [name]Elizabeth[/name] and one goes by [name]Beth[/name] and the other goes by [name]Betty[/name]
While not a couple (they’re only 3), my daughter [name]Grace[/name] has a BFF named [name]Reece[/name] and they are collectively called “Greece” (oh yeah, another couple in our “group” just had a daughter named [name]Macy[/name], so I’m sure the three of them will be called “Greasy”)
I didn’t realize how many couples I knew like this until I thought about it…
I cant think any other couples names are odd. Mine is [name]Allison[/name], NN [name]Ally[/name] and my BF is [name]Alex[/name] ([name]Alexander[/name].)
This made me laugh so hard!
In all honesty, the fact you even thought about this seems so silly to me. I’m in an intercultural marriage so our names don’t mesh up at all!
haha this is funny I’m an [name]Alix[/name] and my fiance is [name]Skyler[/name]. I always so if we go anywhere were we don’t know the people they won’t know who is who with such gender-neutral names. Fyi. I’m the girl and he is the guy.
I almost dated another [name]Alex[/name] though that would have been odd [name]Alex[/name] and [name]Alix[/name].
My friend [name]Shannon[/name] has a brother named [name]Ryan[/name] and she is dating a [name]Ryan[/name]. Her other brother married a [name]Shannon[/name]. So they have 2 [name]Shannon[/name]'s and 2 [name]Ryan[/name]'s in the family.
I know an [name]Anne[/name] and [name]Andy[/name]–just like the rag dolls, haha. My guy and I have names with slant rhyme ([name]Dylan[/name] and [name]Ellen[/name]), which used to bother me a tad, but it hasn’t ever affected anything (except that sometimes people will yell for one of us, and we won’t quite catch which person was called). And since any partner is a package deal, if one of his least desirable qualities is his name half-rhyming with mine, I’ll take it
I don’t think [name]Earl[/name] and [name]Sierra[/name] sound too out of place. Mine and DH’s names don’t sound great together. I’m [name]Lucy[/name] and he’s [name]Liam[/name]. Technically he’s [name]William[/name] (on his birth cert) but he’s always gone by [name]Liam[/name]. I think we’d sound more “matched” as [name]William[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name].
Other names of couples I know:
[name]Shawn[/name] and [name]Shauna[/name]
[name]Carly[/name] and [name]Karl[/name]
[name]Will[/name] and [name]Lynn[/name] (sounds like “willing” if you say it fast!)
This can often get tricky with same-sex couples - I knew a [name]John[/name] and [name]Jonathan[/name] (no longer together) several years ago. My partner is [name]Sarah[/name] and I am [name]Stefanie[/name] - that’s about as close as I’d like to get because things can be confusing.
And I knew a [name]Patricia[/name] and [name]Patrick[/name] who went by [name]Patty[/name] and [name]Pat[/name].
My brother and his brother in law both have the same name - but they sometimes go by “little B–” and “big B–” because my brother is a couple of years older. So both of their respective daughters have an Uncle B as well (which is what they call them).
