Creative Ways to Honor These Names?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries!

Been thinking today about a handful of kids that are very meaningful to me… I’ve been thinking about honoring them a lot on my list lately. Far from having kids myself but I always thought if I did… I’d like to honor one of these kids. Some of them I do have as variants on my list already, but some of the honor options are feeling a little stale, so I thought there might be something a bit more interesting out there. If you had to honor someone with one of these names, what names would you use? [name_m]Or[/name_m] consider? I’m not opposed to honoring across genders (such as [name_m]Marius[/name_m] for Maria/Iris (?) for [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] etc.).

[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] Arumy
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]
[name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m] [name_m]Augusto[/name_m]
[name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Livia[/name_f]
[name_f]Manuella[/name_f]

Thanks, berries!

I like my honour names to be as close to the original name as possible, so here are some ideas I would use:

[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] Arumy - [name_f]Isa[/name_f], [name_f]Bell[/name_f], [name_f]Bella[/name_f], [name_m]Ari[/name_m], [name_f]Rue[/name_f], [name_f]Isaure[/name_f]

[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] - Sab, [name_f]Rina[/name_f], [name_f]Sabina[/name_f], [name_f]Sabella[/name_f], [name_f]Sabre[/name_f]

[name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f] - [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_f]Mari[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Aria[/name_f], [name_f]Clare[/name_f], [name_f]Lara[/name_f], [name_f]Mara[/name_f], [name_f]Marina[/name_f], [name_m]Mariner[/name_m], [name_f]Rio[/name_f]

[name_m]Isaac[/name_m] [name_m]Augusto[/name_m] - [name_f]Isa[/name_f], Izzy/Issy, [name_m]August[/name_m], [name_m]Gus[/name_m], [name_m]Augie[/name_m], [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], Zac/Zaac

[name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] - Ann(e), [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Annabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_f]Fia[/name_f], [name_f]Anaïs[/name_f], [name_f]Nia[/name_f]

[name_f]Esther[/name_f] - [name_f]Essie[/name_f], [name_f]Esta[/name_f], Esa/Isa, [name_m]Esben[/name_m], [name_m]Esau[/name_m]
[name_f]Livia[/name_f] - [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Liv[/name_f], [name_f]Livvy[/name_f], [name_f]Via[/name_f], [name_f]Viv[/name_f], [name_f]Lia[/name_f], [name_m]Lio[/name_m], Vio, [name_m]Ivo[/name_m], [name_f]Iva[/name_f]

[name_f]Manuella[/name_f] → [name_m]Manuel[/name_m], [name_m]Emanuel[/name_m], [name_f]Emanuella[/name_f], [name_m]Manny[/name_m], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Nella[/name_f], [name_m]Mel[/name_m], [name_f]Mella[/name_f], [name_m]Mal[/name_m]

Alternatively, you could use names with similar meanings, e.g. [name_f]Esther[/name_f] (star) → [name_f]Stella[/name_f] (star), [name_f]Clara[/name_f] (bright, famous) → [name_m]Robert[/name_m] (bright fame), etc.

[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] Arumy - any name from the [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] family (as [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] is a variant of Elizabeth) - that gives you tons of options from [name_f]Liesel[/name_f] to [name_f]Bettina[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] to [name_f]Busy[/name_f]. [name_m]Bellamy[/name_m] or [name_f]Bethany[/name_f] could also work. I also like [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] as a spin on [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], or [name_m]Basil[/name_m] for a boy. Arumy could give you [name_f]Ruby[/name_f], [name_f]Rumer[/name_f], [name_f]Maura[/name_f] (or [name_m]Maurice[/name_m] for a boy), or [name_f]Myra[/name_f].

[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] - [name_f]Sabra[/name_f] is my favourite variation. [name_f]Brisa[/name_f] shares some letters with Sabrina; so does [name_f]Brianna[/name_f]. [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] is similar in sound. Any -ina name could also work: [name_f]Carina[/name_f], [name_f]Angelina[/name_f], [name_f]Catalina[/name_f], [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] etc.

[name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f] - any of the [name_f]Mary[/name_f] family (Molly, [name_f]Polly[/name_f], [name_f]Mamie[/name_f], etc) for [name_f]Maria[/name_f]. [name_f]Carla[/name_f] or [name_f]Carly[/name_f] for Clara; this also opens up [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] or [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], plus [name_m]Charles[/name_m] for a boy. [name_f]Marcia[/name_f] combines the two names - with [name_m]Marco[/name_m] or [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] for a boy.

[name_m]Isaac[/name_m] [name_m]Augusto[/name_m] - [name_m]Caesar[/name_m] (or Cesar) came to mind. [name_f]Cassie[/name_f] or [name_m]Casey[/name_m] (or [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f], [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] etc). Other -gus names like [name_m]Angus[/name_m] or [name_m]Fergus[/name_m].

[name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] - any of the [name_f]Anne[/name_f] family (Hannah, [name_f]Nancy[/name_f], etc). [name_m]Asa[/name_m] for a boy? [name_f]Sophronia[/name_f], [name_f]Philomena[/name_f] for shared sounds … or [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] or [name_f]Savannah[/name_f]?

[name_f]Esther[/name_f] - [name_f]Therese[/name_f] has almost all the same letters - and [name_f]Tess[/name_f] or [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] as a nickname.

[name_f]Livia[/name_f] - [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], [name_f]Vivica[/name_f], [name_f]Evelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Alva[/name_f], [name_f]Lively[/name_f], [name_f]Flavia[/name_f] …

[name_f]Manuella[/name_f] - [name_f]Maelle[/name_f], or maybe [name_f]Noella[/name_f]. Any -ella name could also work (Gabriella, [name_f]Arabella[/name_f], [name_f]Daniella[/name_f], etc).

Normally I’d weed out the repeats for you, but I’m a little pushed for time this morning ie I shoulf be gwtting ready to leave the house, not having fun on NB

Thank you everyone!

@silverfiregirly - thanks girl! I’ve been thinking about Sabina/Sabine myself. I do like [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] but she was just not my style at all before she came into my life. I’ve also been thinking about [name_f]Aster[/name_f] quite a lot… never really considered it as an honor for [name_f]Esther[/name_f] before, though! I’ll have to give them some more thought.

@tallemaja - Mirabella/other -bel- names are an interesting idea to honor an [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]! I like just [name_f]Mira[/name_f] better than [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f] or [name_f]Mirabella[/name_f], but [name_f]Mirabella[/name_f] is growing on me lately and even if I opted for just [name_f]Mira[/name_f], I suppose it could honor [name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f]! I think just [name_f]Lara[/name_f] is out; it’s Sabrina’s sister’s name so I just keep thinking of her. Also been loving [name_f]Anya[/name_f] lately… just never thought of her to honor [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] weirdly enough.

@EagleEyes - AMORY! This is brilliant to honor Arumy… I love it. I’ve considered [name_f]Claire[/name_f] on my list as an honor for [name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f] for years, but it recently occurred to me that [name_f]Maris[/name_f] could too. I think regardless, [name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f] is covered :joy::joy:. Also love [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiadh[/name_f] as ways to honor [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f].

@Indilee - Never considered [name_m]Mariner[/name_m] for [name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f] but I love [name_m]Mariner[/name_m]! [name_m]Will[/name_m] have to reconsider getting him back on my list

@Posielee - always felt rather iffy on using [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] because of it being unisex and being so masculine in Wales… especially since I have a lot of Welsh ancestry. But I’ve always liked it, and the excuse to use it to honor [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] is great, I will have to give her more thought!

@Chococat - [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]! Isobel/Isabelle has been my favorite girls name since about 2010 but I have been thinking about [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] and Sybilla/Sybella a lot lately too. I’ll have to consider her more seriously! [name_m]Caesar[/name_m] is so fun for [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] but I don’t know that I have the guts for it. [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] for [name_f]Anna[/name_f] Sophia—Hannah is already a special family name that honors my mom and grandma… just wish I could find a place I like her! I already am considering [name_f]Esme[/name_f] Philomena… just didn’t think to connect [name_f]Philomena[/name_f] to [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]! And yes, [name_f]Tess[/name_f] for [name_f]Esther[/name_f] was sort of what kick-started this post. That and [name_f]Maris[/name_f] which someone else mentioned! [name_f]Love[/name_f] the ideas of [name_f]Lively[/name_f], [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], and [name_f]Alva[/name_f] for Livia—I will have to give them some additional thought. [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] is already on my list and I’ve long loved [name_f]Alva[/name_f], but I’m not sure the tie to [name_f]Livia[/name_f] feels strong enough for me.

@EdgeOfTheMeadow - ROMY! Idk why I never thought of this, I’m always stuck on how to honor Arumy since she goes by her middle. [name_f]Romy[/name_f] and [name_m]Amory[/name_m] (that someone else suggested) are brilliant. I really liked [name_f]Anya[/name_f] and [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] that others mentioned for [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], but I also love [name_f]Annika[/name_f] from your suggestions! And [name_m]Ansel[/name_m]! What a great name and such an interesting honor for [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. Also love astronomy names for Esther… I already love ties to astronomy because the field fascinates… even more reason to find a home for [name_f]Cosima[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_m]Orion[/name_m], and [name_m]Kuiper[/name_m]! (Well, tbh [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] and [name_m]Kuiper[/name_m] have a home on my list already lol)

@Greyblue - thanks girl! [name_f]Arabel[/name_f] is super intriguing me for Arumy… I like that it feels a bit like ethereal, fantasy princess and stands on her own. I’ve liked [name_f]Arabelle[/name_f] but I feel like most people wouldn’t tell it’s not the same as [name_f]Arabella[/name_f]? I do like [name_f]Arabella[/name_f], too, tbh. [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_f]Sasha[/name_f] but I’m struggling to see how it connects to Isaac’s name. But [name_f]Esme[/name_f] is great… currently toying with [name_f]Esme[/name_f] for my list anyway.

@Estrela - so glad you responded… I’m not sure it matters, but most of these kiddos are Brazilian; it’s interesting to see the perspective of another Portuguese-speaker! I especially like [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], Graça (would consider it more seriously if [name_f]Grace[/name_f] wasn’t already a family name… but maybe I can add [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] to the honors intended with using [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. Also like [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] and [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] but they seem enough of a stretch that it’s hard to justify the honor (well, and my sister is N@talie so if I used [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m], it would be to honor her). I’ve also considered using a Portuguese name in general, but my favorites seem to be hard for an American to pronounce or are loaded up with tons of accents that would never make it on a legal document here (Ana [name_f]Vitória[/name_f], [name_m]Simão[/name_m], Abraão). I do like [name_m]Juliano[/name_m], but I feel like even that doesn’t work great… the -o, -m, -ão endings just seem so problematic in [name_f]English[/name_f].

I think it’s because my brain sees it as a stretchy nickname for [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] (from the ‘sa’ sound. [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] → Saac → Sa → [name_f]Sasa[/name_f] → [name_f]Sasha[/name_f] - yeah convoluted I know but :person_shrugging:)

Haha ok fair! I thought maybe just because of all the vowels and S’s in both [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] and [name_m]Augusto[/name_m]. [name_m]Or[/name_m] sometimes it’s spelled Sacha/Sascha (in [name_f]France[/name_f] I think?) so I could sort of see that coming out of the -saac ending, but sound wise I still don’t get it haha. I do love [name_f]Sasha[/name_f]! I just don’t know that I can justify it as an honor for [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] lol.

Thank you for replying!

Because I know your connection with [name_m]Brazil[/name_m] and taking in consideration the names, I assumed all the children where Brazilian  All the names, the combos and their spellings looks “very Brazilian” to me
Arumy sounds familiar, but I don’t know where I saw it before. [name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f] is very, very popular in [name_m]Brazil[/name_m] and Portugal. [name_f]Maria[/name_f] is an unbeatable name in the charts. [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is also very beautiful and a timeless combo, but in Portugal we spell it [name_f]Ana[/name_f] [name_f]Sofia[/name_f]. The same applies to [name_f]Manuella[/name_f] and [name_f]Esther[/name_f]. We only use [name_f]Manuela[/name_f] and [name_f]Ester[/name_f]. In Portugal, it is truly uncommon to find children named [name_f]Manuela[/name_f] or [name_f]Ester[/name_f] nowadays. While in [name_m]Brazil[/name_m], [name_f]Manuela[/name_f], [name_f]Manuella[/name_f] and Manuelly are adored, in Portugal, [name_f]Manuela[/name_f] is considered dated. In fact, most Manuelas are older than 50 years old. [name_f]Ester[/name_f] is also associated with the older generations, but it was never a popular choice, I believe. At least, I’ve only met 3 or 4 women named [name_f]Ester[/name_f].
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] and [name_f]Livia[/name_f] sound so lively! They’re easily recognized, but very underused, in my country. However, I can see [name_f]Livia[/name_f] jumping to the spotlight thanks to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] in the next few years.
I’m a big fan of [name_m]Isaac[/name_m]! Isaac’s meaning is magical. I think [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] [name_m]Augusto[/name_m] sounds majestic. I like the mix between the sweet and fresh [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] with the old-fashioned and pompous [name_m]Augusto[/name_m].

I decided to share a list with similar meanings because the previous posters are already suggested dozens of lovely ideas to honor the names you mentioned.
Graça is beautiful, but honestly, I prefer [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] would be a wonderful idea to honor your sister, indeed!

From your list of Portuguese names, I think you could transform [name_f]Ana[/name_f] [name_f]Vitória[/name_f] into [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]. [name_f]Victória[/name_f] is a popular spelling in Portugal, actually. In this case, you would use an alternative spelling of [name_f]Ana[/name_f] that is very well received in [name_m]Brazil[/name_m] (Anna) and eliminate the accent in [name_f]Victória[/name_f]. Regarding masculine names, the options ending in -ão are extremely difficult to work with in other languages, I know! I feel that most exclusive Portuguese names are difficult to use in non-Portuguese-speaking countries.
For example, I adore [name_m]Sebastião[/name_m], [name_m]Duarte[/name_m], [name_m]Afonso[/name_m], [name_m]Guilherme[/name_m], [name_m]Pedro[/name_m], [name_m]Bernardo[/name_m], [name_m]Henrique[/name_m], [name_m]Lourenço[/name_m], [name_f]Margarida[/name_f], [name_f]Mafalda[/name_f], Áurea, [name_f]Núria[/name_f] and [name_f]Benedita[/name_f]. I think these names are magnificent, but unfortunately, they’re very complicated to pronounce even for other native speakers of Romance languages.

Nevertheless, there are multiple Portuguese international names that may work for you!

I thought [name_m]Juliano[/name_m] would work in [name_f]English[/name_f], perhaps it would not be the best choice if all the members in your family are American and nobody has Portuguese, Spanish or Italian heritage. But isn’t it intuitive to pronounce?

What about [name_f]Juliana[/name_f]? [name_m]Juliano[/name_m] also makes me think about Joviano nn [name_m]Jovi[/name_m].

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think names like [name_m]Ciro[/name_m], [name_m]Augusto[/name_m], [name_m]Frederico[/name_m], [name_m]Antonio[/name_m], [name_m]Cristiano[/name_m] could work in [name_f]English[/name_f]?

Have you heard of some Brazilian indigenous names (Tupi or Guarani names)?
I think some may work in [name_f]English[/name_f] like [name_f]Iara[/name_f] and [name_f]Maiara[/name_f]. I will share the link with you, just for curiosity.

On this website, you will also find some Guarani and Tupi names:

PS: I’m sorry that this turned out to be such an endless reply…

Wow, girl, I did not expect all that lol. Thank you so much! And ahh, well, Isabel is Peruvian. Otherwise, though, I feel like someone familiar with Brazil/Portuguese would be able to pick up that they are pretty Brazilian names lol. And ahh, that is interesting, I was trying to find more info on Manuella because I didn’t think it normally had two L’s. But since coming across this one, I’ve seen it a couple more times in Brazil, so I guess maybe it’s one of those things. Manuela also feels quite middle-aged to me, but I thought maybe it was just one of those things… especially since I’ve come across a ton of Emanuelly’s (and Emanoeli’s etc.) before I met Manuella. Ester is also well used in Brazil from what I can tell, but my little Esther uses an H. I think Sabrina and Livia are both very well used in Brazil, I’ve come across dozens of them, but thankfully they are still much rarer here in the States  And yes, I find Isaac Augusto fascinating (although Isaac perennially confuses me in Portuguese - probably because I’ve seen Isaque occasionally too).

And yes, I appreciate the different approach for suggestions! And ahh, yes, I know I could English-ize it to Anna Victoria but she just loses the charm! I’ve never been a massive Victoria fan, but for some reason, Vitória is different? She seems softer somehow. I’ve also considered Anna Vitória but I just like Ana Vitória visually best. (ETA - not sure I could use Ana Vitória or Anna Victoria anyway; Sabrina’s little sister is Ana Vitória so it just seems like a strange honor to pick her sister’s actual name but use a variant (at best) of Sabrina’s.) And ahh yes, I love Sebastião as well; I’ve opted for the simpler to deal with Sebastian for my own list, but Sebastião does make my heart sing. Same for Simão, Jordão, Abraão, etc. :sob: Maybe I just like it because it’s different? But I do see your point, Juliano should be more usable, although I agree it does stick out a bit on my current list. At one point I seriously considered Juliano Benjamin, but talked myself out of it. I briefly reconsidered a while ago when I was crushing on Jules for a guy again, but the Brazilian half of my heart really is just too bummed that Americans would never get the Brazilian J or O right. And ugh, yes, Margarida is perfect. I like Julia and Juliet more than Juliana these days, but Juliana is nice. I do like Ciro (but default to saying him in an Italian accent, not Brazilian) and Cristiano (but this ultimately feels more Portuguese than Brazilian, thanks to Ronaldo).

Cecilia and Samuel are already on my list, but they just feel so classic and international it’s hard for me to justify them being a Brazilian honor. I do often consider Heloisa/Eloisa or Matheus because they just feel so iconically Brazilian to me. But there are a lot of other names on those list that are so beautiful.

The Tupi & Guarani names are fascinating and so lovely, and I do have some ties to indigenous communities in western Brazil, but as far as I know, my Brazilian kiddos do not have this ancestry (they are all in Maranhão & Ciará), so it doesn’t feel quite appropriate to use those names to honor them.

And girl don’t even worry about the length, it’s nice talking to someone about Brazil/Portuguese. Most Americans aren’t familiar lol. Thank you for all your thoughts and suggestions!

Thank you!

In [name_m]Brazil[/name_m], alternative and original spellings are very common. I think it is similar to what happens in some English-speaking countries, like the USA. That explaines why you have seen Isaque, Emanoeli, [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_m]Davi[/name_m], [name_m]Théo[/name_m], [name_m]Luiz[/name_m], [name_m]Felipe[/name_m] and [name_f]Ellena[/name_f]. In Portugal, you would probably only found [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], [name_f]Emanuela[/name_f], [name_f]Sofia[/name_f], [name_m]David[/name_m], [name_m]Teodoro[/name_m], [name_m]Luís[/name_m], [name_m]Filipe[/name_m] and [name_f]Helena[/name_f]. In the Portuguese-speaking African countries, alternative spellings are also quite frequent.

[name_m]Brazil[/name_m] receives a lot of influences from the countries aroud and even the [name_m]North[/name_m] [name_f]America[/name_f]. [name_m]Diego[/name_m], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_m]Matteo[/name_m], [name_f]Alana[/name_f], [name_m]Bryan[/name_m], [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_m]Wesley[/name_m], [name_m]Julian[/name_m], [name_m]Martin[/name_m], [name_f]Chloé[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_m]Noah[/name_m], [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] and [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] are clear influences from other languages and cultures. [name_m]Brazil[/name_m] also has a very large Italian community, so names like [name_f]Antonella[/name_f], [name_m]Massimo[/name_m], [name_m]Alonso[/name_m], [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f], [name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m], [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], [name_f]Bianca[/name_f], [name_m]Dante[/name_m], [name_f]Alessandra[/name_f], [name_m]Pietro[/name_m], [name_m]Enrico[/name_m], [name_f]Paola[/name_f] and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] also have a high incidence in the country.

In Portugal, until 2015, we had a list of allowed and forbidden names. No alternative spellings were allowed unless the parents were immigrants without a double citizenship at the time of the birth registration. Some parents had more luck and positive experiences, and their elected names were allowed even if they didn’t appear on the list, if the officer didn’t find the name strange or had in consideration the family heritage. However, most civil registry officers were very strict and followed all the rules. Because of that, alternative spellings are very difficult to find in Portugal. Most families are very traditional and most citizens in Portugal still believe the list exists, but simply isn’t as restrictive as it used to be :face_with_peeking_eye:
The truth is that nowadays, we are encountering a lot more international names, different spellings, and unique choices, but I believe most are picked by immigrants. I don’t know the exact statistics, but I’m sure that a big percentage of the babies born nowadays have at least a parent who doesn’t have a Portuguese citizen or has a double citizenship.

[name_f]Emanuelly[/name_f], [name_f]Isabelly[/name_f], Danielly and Gabrielly are very Brazilian, indeed. Same for [name_m]Matheus[/name_m]. [name_f]Livia[/name_f] also feels very Brazilian. I think I’ve met 2 or 3 [name_f]Sabrinas[/name_f] my all life. [name_f]My[/name_f] friend [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] is Portuguese, but she has African ancestry from Cape [name_f]Verde[/name_f]. I don’t know what was the inspiration behind her name but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was from a Brazilian telenovela.
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] is a great name! I agree with you that ot is very interested. On the other hand, Cecília gives me a strong Brazilian vibe. The are few places in the world where Cecília / [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] has such a big protagonism as in [name_m]Brazil[/name_m].
Eloísa and [name_f]Heloísa[/name_f] are wonderful!
Thank you for sharing my admiration for [name_m]Sebastião[/name_m] and [name_f]Margarida[/name_f] on Nameberry  I really like [name_m]Simão[/name_m], I would love to see it more often. I had a friend at school named [name_m]Simão[/name_m]. It’s so traditional, but to rare to find. [name_m]Cristiano[/name_m] definitely feels very Portuguese and also too religious for some. [name_m]Jordão[/name_m] is very intriguing and captivating!

I don’t know much about the indigenous communities in [name_m]Brazil[/name_m] and it is very hard to find information about the names they use. I would love to know more!

However, it has thousands of fans in [name_m]Brazil[/name_m] and I believe it has appeared in the Top 100 in Portugal at least a couple of times.

Ahh, yes, I am very familiar with Brazil’s many spelling variations lol. I’m surprised that [name_m]Brazil[/name_m] loves random H’s in [name_m]Thiago[/name_m], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], etc. - they’re so familiar to me at this point that I just assumed it was a Portuguese thing, not a Brazilian thing. But that does make sense.

And ahh, that makes sense also, I’ve seen [name_f]Emily[/name_f] (and variants) quite a lot lately and they didn’t feel very Portugese to me lol. I have seen [name_f]Antonella[/name_f] and [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f] and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] a lot, so that makes sense. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] too.

That’s fascinating that the list no longer exists? I think the last time I talked to a Portuguese berry, I think it was probably about 2014… so I guess that makes sense why I didn’t know about it haha.

I don’t know a ton either, I made a trip to one of the indigenous villages in western [name_m]Brazil[/name_m] in 2017 to help them build a chapel and clinic/refresh their bathrooms, etc. - it was definitely a different way of living! I don’t remember all of their names, but most of them had very international/Brazilian names - [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], [name_m]Ivo[/name_m], [name_m]Andre[/name_m], Rosangela, [name_f]Evelyn[/name_f] (can’t remember the spelling, but I do remember it wasn’t spelled [name_f]Evelyn[/name_f] and I remember thinking “oh that is probably their take on Evelyn” - maybe [name_f]Evelin[/name_f] or Evilen?), [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f], etc.? maybe [name_m]Gilberto[/name_m] or [name_f]Adelina[/name_f] or something along those lines too. I can’t remember the chief’s name or his wife, but [name_m]Gilberto[/name_m] and [name_f]Adelina[/name_f] feel like they’re on the right path anyway. I only understood about half of what I heard when I was in [name_m]Brazil[/name_m] the last time, but I have since seen them trying to become a part of society, attract tourism to see the beautiful things on their land (mostly waterfalls and such), and fight for their rights in local government. Like most colonized countries, the indigenous peoples are having to fight for their rights. A Brazilian friend a few years ago told me that the Brazilian president was diminishing their rights, but tbh I don’t know enough to feel like an expert on it.

So interesting seeing some of these names, I’ve been seeing a rise in [name_f]Ana[/name_f] [name_f]Lu[/name_f] or Analu over the past year or two… it’s such a sweet sound and I think it looks so much lovelier than [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Lou[/name_f] (although she’s not bad either)… [name_m]Caio[/name_m] is fine to me, I just think of Gaius/Caius (which I was familiar with long before I was introduced to “cair” lol! But I suppose that’s fair enough. I’ve just recently tried to get back into learning Portuguese, eventually I’d like to be fluent but I’m far from it at this point. I understand the basics but I would probably be lucky if I understood about 25% of a conversation if I were in [name_m]Brazil[/name_m] today. And CLEIDE? Cleide is a real name? Last time I was in [name_m]Brazil[/name_m] I met a little Cleideneils0n, but I did not realize the Cleide part had legitimate origins. And [name_f]Gisele[/name_f]! I have seen quite a bit of Giselly/Gisely/Gisele lately. Such a pretty name. Seems like there’s quite a lot of [name_m]French[/name_m] influence too, given all the Isabelle’s, Gisele’s, etc. that I’ve seen lately.
