Creepy name?

So I’m not sure if I can use my long-time favorite name! [name_u]Dexter[/name_u]. I did not watch the show, “Dexter,” so I don’t associate the name with a serial killer, but I know lots of other people have and do. The show is going to be so far in the past when my child grows up, but I’m afraid of choosing a name that other people will find creepy. Thoughts??

[name_f]My[/name_f] son [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] is 13 now.

I named him before watching the show. I have since watched the show and love it even more now. He may be a killer but he’s also a beloved character to many.

[name_f]My[/name_f] son hasn’t experienced anyone referring to the show. The only time I heard about it was when he was a baby and it was from fans of the show. It was also currently airing at that time. Since then though, I haven’t heard anything about it.

I love his name and he likes it too.

Okay, great to know! [name_f]Do[/name_f] you mainly call your son [name_m]Dex[/name_m] or [name_u]Dexter[/name_u]?

I am aware of [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] the show with the serial killer but as a mid-90s baby my first association is Dexter’s Lab and I therefore see it as kind of a nerdy name lol. I don’t think either association is too strong to not use the name if you like it, though.

Probably about 50/50. He also gets Flex and Flexterino on occasion. lol

I actually mentioned [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] to my girlfriend (who’s 19) recently, and her immediate reaction was “Like the serial killer?”. I thought it was weird since I personally just think of Dexter’s Lab, but she did say she’d find it extremely weird if she met a [name_u]Dexter[/name_u], because to her it’s on the same level as the name [name_m]Hannibal[/name_m].

She’s from [name_f]Canada[/name_f] if that matters to you, I’m pretty sure [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] is a little more accepted in the US, and a lot more common in the UK!

[name_u]Dexter[/name_u] isn’t a super common/popular name but I think it’s been used enough and is familiar enough that it isn’t exclusively tied to the show - I’ve known a few Dexters :person_shrugging: maybe that’s skewed by the fact I’m in the UK, but I wouldn’t really think about the show though I have heard of it

I actually watched the show when it was airing, and I honestly don’t even think of the serial k*ller unless it’s pointed out. I do, however, associate [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] with Dexter’s Laboratory :woman_shrugging: the theme song runs through my head every time I see or hear it

I know that the show exists, but I don’t make the connection when I hear the name [name_u]Dexter[/name_u].

I think it’s fine. Honestly, I don’t think anyone is going to care about the show in ten or twenty years time. [name_u]New[/name_u] shows come out all the time and so I doubt [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] is going to be relevant among the current generation of kids.

I’ve known several with this name, never seen the show or anything. I think it’s absolutely fine! Is that show that popular? Really, even if it is, I think it’s wearable for sure. It’s not a one-person, one-name type of name like [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] or [name_f]Katniss[/name_f] may be for girls.

I haven’t seen the show, but I had heard of it before. I didn’t know until seeing this that he was the serial killer in that show, so hopefully there are a lot of other Americans who haven’t! Like others, I associated it with Dexter’s Laboratory instead. I think it is useable! And I like what others have said that the show probably won’t be remembered much in a few years.

I never watched the show, so I wouldn’t mind it.

I know of the show and have only heard good things about it  So [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] doesn’t have a negative association for me. I really like this name! [name_m]Dex[/name_m] is an awesome nickname!

It’s interesting that only the girl NB definition includes “skillful” That’s a cool meaning tho!

I’d also like to mention for those whom haven’t seen the show. Yes, [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] was a serial killer but he only killed bad people. He would do his own investigation to make sure that they were guilty and then take them out. He killed other killers and offenders, essentially saving a lot of innocent people. So that’s why he’s a beloved character. He’s more like Batman than [name_u]Kemper[/name_u].

I’ve had the name [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] on my list since I can remember, I’m weird though, so it might just be me, I love the name [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] and would love to use it for my son someday.
