Creighton?

I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Creighton[/name] but I want an unusual spelling for it!?!? I need some help!!!

If you’re pronouncing it cray-ton (which is how I assume it’s pronounced) then [name]Crayton[/name], Craiton, Craaton, Craeton? personally though I like the look of [name]Creighton[/name] much better than any of the ones I’ve just suggested.

It’s pronounced ‘KRITE-n’ (I left the ‘o’ out because it disappears when I say the word). I’ve heard of it twice. Firstly on the android in ‘[name]Red[/name] Dwarf’ who spells it Kryten and then the main character in ‘Farscape’ who’s name is [name]John[/name] [name]Crichton[/name]. He’s often referred to just by his surname. [name]Both[/name] are pronounced the same as [name]Creighton[/name].

I guess you could also spell it Cryton or Kryton or [name]Crighton[/name]?

And I like the name pronounced (cray-ton) THANKS!!!

cre¡tin
[kreet-n or, esp. British, kret-n]
noun

  1. a person suffering from cretinism.
  2. a stupid, obtuse, or mentally defective person.

That’s not how you say the surname though…

It’s close enough that it would really put me off. It’s close enough that people would mispronounce it as that often enough. It was my first thought and instinct when I saw it.

For real?!? I think it is a terrible name no matter how you prn it.

I immediately thought of “cretin,” too. [name]Even[/name] though I know that’s not how the name is pronounced, it’s pretty close - and some people would have difficulty pronouncing it and would go straight to the “cretin” pronunciation. I think it’s a bad choice for a first name, though I suppose it would be alright as a middle. Also reminds me of crustacean, for some reason.

I’ve never heard it so you’ll excuse the mistake. I was basing my pronunciation on [name]Leighton[/name] - which is just like [name]Layton[/name]. I think Kryton is the best, or [name]Crighton[/name], maybe you could do Crieton, Krieton also.

This is exactly what I think if when I see the name. It’s just not usable [name]IMO[/name]. ‘Cretin’ is a very rude word for an unfortunate person who is simple minded, and who looks/acts well below average.

It’s hideous regardless of how you spell it.

You likely won’t find a lot of love on here for this name because it’s a different style that most of the names that folks on here like. I was still a little surprised at all the hate. It’s not my style, but I don’t hate it and I have never met one, so it’s definitely unusual, which is nice. I pronounce it CRAY-ton, and I don’t know and other valid spellings. Maybe [name]Crayton[/name]? I much prefer [name]Creighton[/name], though. Any particular reason you want a different spelling?

This isn’t true at all. I’ve noticed a lot of different styles on this board. Yes, some styles are more predominate than other but there are still a lot of different styles represented regardless!

The first thing I think of when I see/hear the name is cretin. If you were to use the name, I think [name]Creighton[/name] would be best, the name is unusual to begin with, you don’t need to make it more “unique” with a different spelling.

That’s funny because I was basing my pronunciation of it on [name]Leighton[/name] as well, but which has always been pronounced like “Leeton” by people I know with the name, sharing the same sound with other names containing “leigh”, such as [name]Kayleigh[/name].

I personally think [name]Creighton[/name] is the best-looking spelling for the name, but if you want it pronounced “cray” and you’d really like a different spelling so as to avoid confusion with the pronunciation, then I’d keep it simple and go with something like [name]Crayton[/name] or Craton. You could also just replace the ‘e’ and go with Craighton.

Since it seems to bring up negative connotations with so many people though, you might want to consider other names with a similar sound that might appeal to you but have fewer bad associations, such as Chayton, Drayton, Jayton, etc.

Good luck!

Honestly, not knowing the pronunciation, when I see [name]Creighton[/name], I hear Cree-tin and think of a creature… I think if the spelling was a bit different it would be better…

My first thought, too.

Sorry, I also immediately thought of cretin; it’s just way too close.

All of this. And while I love [name]Red[/name] Dwarf too, I’m not sure why you think Kryten is that great of a namesake haha.

It made me think of the play ‘The Admirable [name]Creighton[/name]’ by JM [name]Barrie[/name] of [name]Peter[/name] [name]Pan[/name] fame - but I knew there was some other reason it rang a bell…[name]Creighton[/name] Method fertility care! Neither of these associations help me think of it as a first name, sorry.
