Crystal?

I’m recently liking the name [name_f]Crystal[/name_f], and I’m thinking about adding it to my list, however, I’m a bit unsure.

What are your thoughts on [name_f]Crystal[/name_f]? I know NB’s description wasn’t the kindest (though I’m not sure if it’s changed now or not??) but I’m looking for some other thoughts/feedback

Thanks!

I like it. The only [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] I met was my age, and she was a nice girl. She was in my high school and then went to the same college I did. I don’t know why people don’t like this name, its just like [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f].

I don’t mind [name_f]Crystal[/name_f]. It brings to mind crystals (obviously) and winter for me. It’s a pleasant association.

As for NB’s descriptions? They’re quite arbitrary and can be overlooked in most cases.

I find it a bit lackluster and tired.

It feels like a “mom” name to me now because I went to school with 4 and they were not the classiest people in the world, so I don’t have a positive reaction to the name. However, I can understand that it SHOULD be just like using [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] or [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], and maybe if I met a few young Crystals, it would grow on me.

It is a dated mom name for me.

Unfortunately [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] isn’t very classy in my opinion.

I met an amazing girl called [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] about a month ago, she’s classy, sweet and everything the “typical” [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] isn’t so I associate the name with her. It’s a little dated in the broader spectrum of things and doesn’t have the best associations but really, if the girl the name is in is a great person, she’ll make the name.

I’m sorry but for me [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] is a really tacky name, I went to a really bad school and it was full of [name_f]Crystal[/name_f]'s. It also kind of makes my think of crystal meth.

Its not really like using [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] or [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]. It’s more like using [name_f]Diamond[/name_f].

I would love to know what arbitrary criteria make some gem names trashy while others get to be classy.

I think [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] is a perfect addition to your list, [name_u]Haley[/name_u].

I’ve known two Crystals, who were lovely, so I see [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] as a nice name imagewise. As long as it’s [name_f]Crystal[/name_f], no spelling changes, I think it’s okay.

Thank you everyone. I didn’t realise the name seemed “trashy” - I know a couple not so pleasant Crystals but I’ve never typecasted the whole name because of people I knew. Maybe it’s just me though! I just thought all gem names were on the same level - [name_f]Crystal[/name_f], [name_f]Sapphire[/name_f], [name_f]Emerald[/name_f], [name_f]Diamond[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], etc.!

The more you know, I suppose!

I don’t like to ever classify a name as trashy, but I too went to a tough high school. There were many [name_f]Crystal[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Krystal[/name_f]'s who roamed the halls. 2 of them were pregnant back in the day, 1 was a bully, I just have very negative experiences with the name.

I’m not a huge fan of gem names in general, so I have nothing against [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] specifically over any of the others. I think for some reason, those kind of names have gotten attached to not so upstanding people, more so on TV than in real life, and that could be where the “stigma” comes from. I do think [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] sounds a bit dated to my ear, but there’s nothing wrong with that and you like a lot of the 80s and 90s names, so it fits right in with many of the ones you’ve already had or have currently on your list. My own name plunks me down right smack in the late 80s/early 90s and I don’t like that about it, either, so it’s nothing to do with [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] specifically. lol I think if I met the right person with the name, I could really like it. =] It has a nice sound and pretty associations. I quite like crystals. As it is, I don’t know anyone with the name, so I don’t have any personal associations to sweeten or sour the name for me–it just sort of is. Blank slate, so to speak. If you like it, though, then go for it! Find a really awesome middle name to go with it and add it to the list. ^^

To me it is a tacky, not trashy, name. I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with [name_f]Diamond[/name_f] or [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] but they have a very different feel to them (in my opinion) than some other gem names. Also not typecasting because of people I knew, I know no [name_f]Diamond[/name_f]'s or [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f]'s but feel the same way towards them as I do about [name_f]Crystal[/name_f].

You can absolutely picture a [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] from 1920. 1920’s [name_f]Diamond[/name_f], not so much. Different feel to them, that’s all.

I’ve always been angry at the “trashy” stamp a lot of people think it’s okay to use on some names… Crystals are awesome, [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] is a gorgeous name.
I realise it conjures a stereotype for a lot of people, but those kinds of associations can easily be overcome and people should make more of an effort, honestly.

One of the reasons I’m kind of past the whole “[name_f]Crystal[/name_f] is trashy” thing (which I admit I’ve had to work to get rid of), is Orphan [name_m]Black[/name_m], the most awesome series in the world right now. There’s a character called [name_f]Krystal[/name_f] there who lives up to all the stereotypes on the surface. Scratch that surface and you find someone bright and fierce who has a knack for improvising her way out of bad situations. You should check it out if you’re not already familiar!

I don’t think nameberry’s job is to be kind in its analysis of names, more just to give their opinion.

I think of three things when I hear [name_f]Crystal[/name_f].

  1. meth
  2. Dynasty soap opera
  3. [name_m]New[/name_m] Age crystals

For these reasons, I don’t favor the name, but if you like it, it is usable.

Seems like for most people it depends on who they know that wears the name, and how they wear it. For my part, I had a good friend growing up named [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] who was a pretty wild woodsy girl. She grew up on a large farm and all her life wanted to train horses, now, she owns her own farm and trains horses. So for me it’s a pretty strong nature inspired name. I prefer this original spelling and for me it makes me think of my friend and, not surprisingly, crystals.

I think because it was so popular in the 80s it has that same ‘dated’ feel of [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] and [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], but I find it to fit in with today’s nature names. And if you look at the chart of use, it may not have been super popular before the 80s, but it has been in the top 1000 for the last 100 years, so not totally obscure either.

I was coming here to say I love [name_f]Krystal[/name_f] because of [name_f]Krystal[/name_f] from OB, ha!

I really like [name_f]Crystal[/name_f], but I like [name_f]Krystal[/name_f] more. It has a spunk to it and I love the character [name_f]Krystal[/name_f] Goderitch (see @dearest’s quote above). She’s an awesome character. The name would suit lovely in your signature, [name_u]Haley[/name_u].

Personally, i dont like it. I wouldnt call it trashy but it is tacky. It also does remind me of crystal meth.

But thats just my opinion.
