My partner and I are expecting a baby, due in [name]July[/name], and don’t know the sex but have a gut feeling it’s a boy. We have lots of time to decide but are so excited (we’d been trying a while) that we’re already deep into name planning. My partner likes [name]Owen[/name], but I worry it’s too trendy. We’re also tossing around [name]Ronan[/name] and [name]Curran[/name]. I love [name]Curran[/name] for its meaning and the culinary associations, but worry it’s almost too “out there.” I’ve seen the name on this site but not most other baby naming sources. Friends give me a blank look when I mention it. Someone thought I’d said “Currant.” Is it too weird? Would he constantly have to explain and spell his name? Or does it seem like it hits a sweet spot? Opinions welcome! Thanks so much.
It’s okay. I don’t love it or hate it. It does remind me a lot of [name]Cullen[/name], though.
I’ve never seen [name]Curran[/name] as a first name, only as a surname. And the family I know whose surname is [name]Curran[/name] does always have to correct the pronunciation - cur-[name]RAN[/name] rather than CUR-ren - or correct those that mishear currant. I wouldn’t use it myself.
[name]Ah[/name], good point about the pronunciation - I’d assumed it was “CUR-ren.” [name]Even[/name] harder if some would say “cur-[name]RAN[/name]” due to last name associations.
I like [name]Curran[/name], but then it doesn’t sound weird to me as I taught a lovely boy called Kurun (KUR-un) – he’s 3rd generation [name]Indian[/name] which is where the name comes from.
I really like [name]Curran[/name]! I think it’s handsome and cool.
Best wishes!

I think its weirdly wonderful. I wouldn’t name my child it as it doesn’t seem to have a cute nn (maybe [name]Curry[/name]??!) which i don’t think is great. Depends on your criteria.
I would, however, ignore friends reactions to names, don’t let them put you off a name that you really like. My friends did this when we were naming our twins, so we changed them to not-so-out-there names (though i would never refer to the original names as ‘out there’!!) Although i love my boys names, we do have name repeats within our friends group (met after all our babies were born) so i am a bit gutted that they don’t have fantastically unique names!
You’re so right - I should resist the urge to talk about our names with friends! People have such strong opinions and I find they don’t know / realize how popular some choices are now if they don’t have kids themselves. On the flip side, it’s funny how the closer we get to bestowing a name on an actual child, the more hesitant we feel about the unusual picks. But I don’t want to go with something safe only to regret it later. Anyway, thanks all so much for the comments. I’m sure I’ll be posting more in the future as we sort through our list.
I like it! I have a friend who had that name curran as one of her two final choices. She chose the name after a surfer.
Ditto! I first heard the name on [name]Ted[/name] [name]Kennedy[/name]'s stepson, and I thought it was very handsome.
Good luck!
Currant or [name]Curry[/name] is exactly what the child will have to put up with all the time.

This is my (married) last name and I hate it! People always think it’s pronounced cur-[name]RAN[/name] (like as in [name]Duran[/name] [name]Duran[/name]) and to me it sounds far too much like curry, currant and current for my liking. I’ve heard it as a first name on people before and felt rather sorry for them. But hey, just my perception. I’m glad so many of you think it’s beautiful sounding
[name]Do[/name] you know if it was after surfer brothers [name]Tim[/name] & [name]Josh[/name] [name]Curran[/name]? [name]Just[/name] curious…we’re thinking of naming our son-on-the-way [name]Timothy[/name], which we have recently realised would in effect make him [name]Tim[/name] [name]Curran[/name] -trying to decide if it would be weird or cool to have the exact same name as someone pretty cool and relatively famous (although not too famous outside of the surfing world).
[name]Curran[/name] isn’t weird at all. In fact, it seems right on trend: It’s a two-syllable surname, starts with a hard C/K sound, ends in -n, so it will fit right in with [name]Cullen[/name], [name]Kaelin[/name], [name]Cohen[/name] (and [name]Hayden[/name], [name]Payton[/name], [name]Hudson[/name], etc.)
I’ve heard this as a surname (I once knew a [name]Melinda[/name] [name]Curran[/name]), so I see the surname-name appeal, but it just reminds me of curry, which I find odd…
I do like [name]Curran[/name], but I think your son would be constantly having to pronounce it for people. [name]How[/name] about:
[name]Cullen[/name]
[name]Callum[/name]
[name]Connor[/name]
[name]Conall[/name]
[name]Colin[/name]
We named our son [name]Curran[/name] and haven’t regretted it for a second–we get lots of compliments–most people seem to think it’s beautiful (“cool” is also a word we hear a lot). Good luck with your decision!
I think it’s wonderful. I named my boy born march 6, 2010 [name]Curran[/name]. I chose it 2 1/2 years ago when expecting my daughter who I thought would be a boy. I do see it used as a last name mostly - and like some other poster here noticed at [name]Ted[/name] kennedy’s funeral that his stepson is named that.
I can tell you that in the weeks since he’s been born almost nobody is familiar with the name. And - that your instinct is right - choose the name you want. [name]Don[/name]'t worry about what your friends say. It is intimidating to give a person thier name - but it’s your job, not anyone else’s.
The name isn’t for everyone - one of our friends said he will be picked on because of it. But in the 3 years I was looking at boy names none pulled me to it as much as [name]Curran[/name]. It’s such a personal choice! Good luck! Congrats on the pregnancy.
As Irish names go, this is really easy to say. It does fit with current trends, but it’s distinctly different.
I [name]LOVE[/name] this name for a boy! While I was traveling through Europe, I met an Irishman named [name]Curran[/name] and he was SUCH a hottie. I’m happily married (to a hottie of my own), but, hey, a girl can dream…
I would definitely consider this name for my son.
