Current name crush - Esther

I have [name_f]Tess[/name_f] in the ‘favorite names’ in my signature, despite not usually liking short forms as given names, but at the same time I wouldn’t use a “formal” name I didn’t like just to use a nickname. Therefore, if push came to shove, I’d just use the short form!

Anyhow for a long time the only name I loved that could feasibly give [name_f]Tess[/name_f] as a nn, is [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f], but it’s not a name that I don’t think I’d be brave enough to use. (At least that’s how I feel right now, when I start a family one day, I may feel differently).

[name_f]Esther[/name_f] can also give the nn [name_f]Tess[/name_f], and when I first started crushing on [name_f]Tess[/name_f], I liked [name_f]Esther[/name_f] but not enough to consider using it. However, in recent months I’ve been putting the final touches to one side of my family tree, and there are several ancestors called [name_f]Esther[/name_f] on it, and gradually I’ve found myself falling in love with the name.

I am this close to adding [name_f]Esther[/name_f] to my signature, and removing [name_f]Tess[/name_f], but I’m just curious about [name_u]Berry[/name_u] opinions on it. I’d especially like to know if [name_m]Asher[/name_m] (my current boy crush) and [name_f]Esther[/name_f] would make a good or bad sibset, because my twin sister thinks they sound too similar.

[name_f]TIA[/name_f]!

I adore [name_f]Esther[/name_f]. The Biblical story of [name_f]Esther[/name_f] is also amazing. [name_f]My[/name_f] grandmother’s middle name was a variant of it. It is a bit of an dusty/ugly old lady name, but in a way that I personally am ready for a revival of. I’m sure the reactions you get will be mostly around that taste line - people make different calls about the many names in this borderline category - [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] [name_f]Enid[/name_f] [name_f]Ethel[/name_f] [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] etc.

I do think [name_f]Esther[/name_f] and [name_m]Asher[/name_m] are pretty close with the matching endings and the vowel start and the sibilant sounds. At the same time they’re so distinct in trend - [name_f]Esther[/name_f] still being pretty outside the mainstream, [name_m]Asher[/name_m] rapidly rising - that that both gives them some distance from each other but makes them more mismatched. And then again they still have a shared Biblical history. It wouldn’t at all be something I’d encourage, but if they are your two favorites, and you plan on calling [name_f]Esther[/name_f] at least by a nickname, it’s hardly the worst thing ([name_f]Tess[/name_f] and [name_m]Asher[/name_m] and [name_f]Tess[/name_f] and [name_u]Ash[/name_u] are all pretty distinct).

While I love the Bible story of [name_f]Esther[/name_f], I find the name old fashioned and not quite ready for a comeback. However, meeting a little [name_f]Esther[/name_f] could totally change my mind!

[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] would be my way to get to [name_f]Tess[/name_f].

I know a little baby [name_f]Esther[/name_f], she’s really adorable!
I have a few Esthers in my family tree as well, I think it’s definitely useable, and I’d love to hear it more often. The biblical association is quite nice, I just love the stars, the nicknames [name_f]Essie[/name_f] or [name_f]Tess[/name_f] are sweet as well!

Not a fan of [name_f]Esther[/name_f], sorry. As a previous poster said, it’s too old-fashioned and not ready for a comeback, in my opinion. I also think your sister is right. [name_m]Asher[/name_m] and [name_f]Esther[/name_f] are too similar for siblings.

I like it!

But I agree about [name_m]Asher[/name_m] and [name_f]Esther[/name_f]. It’s not such a big deal if she always goes by [name_f]Tess[/name_f], though.

Thanks for your opinions.

[name_f]Esther[/name_f] was ranked about #220-something last year, so while it’s not super popular, I think it has already sort of come back in a small way.

It’s typical isn’t it, that I find two names I really love, but they’re really similar?!

Ha ha ha! Yes, I think so!

I adore [name_f]Esther[/name_f] but I’m not sure I’d ever use it. I always thought it sounded rather fusty but I was at Cracker Barrel for dinner once and my waitress was a teen named [name_f]Esther[/name_f]. She was gorgeous and made me fall in love with the name.

I do think [name_f]Esther[/name_f] and [name_m]Asher[/name_m] are too similar for siblings.

I love the name [name_f]Esther[/name_f]! I know a high-school-aged girl named [name_f]Esther[/name_f], and the name is totally modern and wearable. If anything, I think the fact that many people consider the name too be too “old-lady-ish” plays in your favor, because [name_f]Esther[/name_f] is likely to remain a rare gem. I do think it is too similar to be a sibling to [name_m]Asher[/name_m] though. :frowning:

I used to have a massive crush on [name_f]Esther[/name_f], and although I think it’s absolutely beautiful I wouldn’t use it as a first name. I do think [name_m]Asher[/name_m] and [name_f]Esther[/name_f] are quite similar but you could get away with them for siblings if they are the names you truly love…
