Cute or weird?

I’m a teenberry who has an interest in words and names so I’m just collecting opinions and advice. I have three sets if names that I like:

  1. Paddington [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Knight[/name_m]
  2. [name_f]Poet[/name_f] [name_f]Marcheline[/name_f] [name_u]Vesper[/name_u]
  3. [name_u]Hero[/name_u] [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u]

However, the nns I’d like to use are 1) [name_m]Bear[/name_m] 2) [name_f]Bunny[/name_f] (after the [name_u]March[/name_u] hare) and 3) [name_f]Birdie[/name_f].

Is this too animal themed or would it be cute just as nicknames? Thanks berries!X

[name_u]Hero[/name_u] [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u] is lovely, though I was never a fan of the Shakespearean character [name_u]Hero[/name_u]. Also, nn [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] is a bit of a stretch (you’re taking it from her second middle name).
I like [name_f]Poet[/name_f], though it’d be awkward if she hated poetry. I prefer [name_f]Marceline[/name_f] with [name_f]Poet[/name_f]. [name_f]Marcheline[/name_f] is pronounced marsh-uh-leen, by the way, not as in [name_u]March[/name_u] the month.
Paddington is interesting.

The nns are way over the top in my opinion. It’s one thing for nn to be cute but it’s another to use names that will permanently infantilize the person. There are a lot of traditional nn for girls’ names that would be cute if their history of usage wasn’t so intentionally diminishing. [name_f]Bunny[/name_f] (and, arguably [name_f]Birdie[/name_f]) is an excellent example of such a nn.

I love the names, but I agree that [name_f]Bunny[/name_f] and [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] are over the top. I like [name_m]Bear[/name_m] as a nn, though. I have a [name_m]Bear[/name_m] / [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] [name_m]Bear[/name_m] (nickname for my [name_m]Theodore[/name_m])

I actually really like your combos and the nicknames! They’re very cutesy though- along the same lines as lovebug, princess, honeypie and sweetiepie (my mum called my sister and me that when we were little), etc. So you could call them that as a pet name inside the house but if I were called that in public after the age of 4 or 5 I’d be really embarrassed. Expecting other people to use these nicknames, if that’s what you were thinking, probably wouldn’t work.

[name_f]Poet[/name_f] [name_f]Marcheline[/name_f] [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] - I can’t find any origins for [name_f]Marcheline[/name_f], aside from [name_f]Angelina[/name_f] [name_f]Jolie[/name_f]'s mother. I’d much prefer to see [name_f]Marceline[/name_f]. The combo overall is a lot of unusual names together - which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. However, a future daughter might want a name that can help her blend in, rather than stand out. You might want to add a middle name that has the potential for a more mainstream nickname. (For example, I have [name_u]Hero[/name_u] [name_f]Alexandrie[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] on my list. On the very tiny offchance that I ever use it, she could also go by [name_u]Alex[/name_u] or [name_u]Lexie[/name_u].) And as for the nickname…[name_f]Bunny[/name_f] would be cute on a two year old, maybe, but keep in mind that any baby you actually name will someday be an adult. An adult named [name_f]Bunny[/name_f] screams ‘porn star’ to me.

[name_u]Hero[/name_u] [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u] - I love [name_u]Hero[/name_u], but again I think you could use a different middle name to ground this combo. ‘[name_f]Birdie[/name_f]’ is just fine as a nickname, though again better suited to a child than an adult.

Paddington [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Knight[/name_m] - Oh goodness. I was going to say that Paddington is too strongly tied to the bear for me, before I saw the nickname. Sorry if this is too blunt, but Paddington “[name_m]Bear[/name_m]” is just cruel. It would be sweet on a baby or a toddler, but going through high school and adulthood as a Paddington would be awful! It’s cutesy, and I’m sure it was fun to come up with, but for an actual human being it’s way too over the top. Could I suggest bumping [name_u]James[/name_u] to the first name spot? With [name_u]James[/name_u] Paddington [name_m]Knight[/name_m], you could still call him ‘[name_m]Bear[/name_m],’ but Paddington would be tucked away.

I find them all a little weird. Too cutesy for my style and I can’t really imagine calling your child [name_u]Hero[/name_u] or [name_f]Poet[/name_f] or Paddington. Paddington sounds like a bad name for a dog, imo…And as for [name_u]Hero[/name_u] and [name_f]Poet[/name_f], I don’t like noun names. What if “[name_f]Poet[/name_f]” ends up hating reading or writing?

[name_m]Bear[/name_m] is a bit over the top. [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] is too. I like [name_f]Bunny[/name_f], though. Paddington has too many memories from when I was five, so it seems a bit odd. [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] doesn’t seem to have a wonderful connection to her name. The nn makes you think, it’s kind of out of the way. Actually, all of the nns are like that.

Paddington is forever tainted by the cute little bear. A kid named Paddington would be teased from here to next [name_f]Tuesday[/name_f].

[name_f]Poet[/name_f] [name_f]Marcheline[/name_f] [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] and [name_u]Hero[/name_u] [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u] are a bit out there for me. I think they work fine and the nns are a bit too cutesy for my taste. Paddington is way over the top and I can’t see any positives about calling a child that (sorry just being honest!) with the nn bear I think you would be inviting teasing.

The only one I’d definitely nix is Paddington–way too associated w/the bear ever to work for an adult. The nn’s are cutesy, but fine as terms of endearment within the family. I like your girls’ picks!

I really like the combos but the nicknames are too over the top for me.

Thanks for everyone’s opinions! I’m glad that the girls names are liked by a lot of you and I understand that Paddington is over the top but [name_f]Poet[/name_f] and Paddington were too cute a combo to ignore, however, I like the idea of putting it in the mn spot with [name_u]James[/name_u] Paddington [name_m]Knight[/name_m]. The nn would only ever be used as pet names for little ones so they wouldn’t have to carry them through life! [name_m]Bear[/name_m] has been a favourite of mine but I wouldn’t call my child that and [name_f]Bunny[/name_f] and [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] are recent favourites. I guess I just love animal names! Thanks X

Nicely said.

Children are not a “cute combo”, they’re people.

If you’re going to use [name_u]James[/name_u] for a boy, the girls should get normal names, too.

I agree with the last post. Children are not a cute combo. I do think that sibling names should match nicely, but the animal theme nicknames are just too much. Choose one. Please do not use them together!
I am assuming that you are not married and ttc yet. [name_m]Just[/name_m] an FYI, you may love these names, but I bet you will have a hard time getting your partner on board.

Thanks for your opinions X
